Will be at Oceanside Arena in Tempe to take on ASSu this weekend. We are going to get rolled. In 6 games ASSu has a GF/GA of 42-9.

Yeah for about 7-8 years now the hockey club has been thoroughly mediocre to bad. Haven't really even made the playoffs. For the last 5 years or so asu's team had been one of the 3-4 best in the country. They would get humiliated in d1 though
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

i'll just go with fuck asu.

Why? I think there is opportunity here. The closest colleges for west coast (mostly PNW) kids who want to play NCAA Hockey are Colorado College and U. Denver. Other than that, they've got to move to North Dakota or further. Just because they play hockey doesn't mean they enjoy not seeing the sun (or cleavage) nine months a year.

ASU won't be Frozen Four material any time soon, but they should have an advantage over every other start-up program that's going to get lost in the mix of Great Lake and North East colleges.

Seems like that was a very long time ago. Things went very south at the end of the Golembiewski era.

It's amazing because in the 80's and 90's, the UofA dominated asu in hockey. They had a winning streak of something like 65+ games in a row. Then one of the assistant coaches took over asu and turned that program into an elite club team. Growing up back east and playing some hockey, I would love to see the UofA play at the division one level. Leo and the Cats once beat Alaska-Anchorage, a division one team. They never came back to Tucson after that loss.

The AD runs a nice tight ship financially because we don't have too many mouths to feed, and with the equipment, travel, and arena rental, hockey would be one hungry motherfucker with not a ton of fan interest to offset the cost of both it and the corresponding women's sport we would need to add.

There's a reason why ASSU's entry is being funded by donors. That shit is expensive.

Arizona used to almost sell out hockey games. Now Asu is the one that dominates us. I don't know if we have more than 5 wins in the last 6-7 years against them

Personally, I would love for the Wildcats to build a strong D1 hockey program.

I watch one of the better conferences (ECAC) out here and there is nothing like watching good, young, D1 level hockey players go at it. It's actually my most favorite sporting event to attend live and I've been to Super Bowls, World Series games, Final Four's, etc...

D1 hockey was discussed back when sand volleyball was added. I thought someone posted the numbers back then, but hockey is indeed incredibly expensive. Unless football wins a NC this year ;) ;) then I don't think we can do that. And I'm not sure we'd be able to anyways. Is TCC really enough to house a D1 hockey program? I haven't been up to ASU hockey but don't they have a pretty nice facility to use?

ASSU received a 21M donation from some hocky fan who wanted ASSU to have a program, that's why they have one. The rub is they had to add a womens program as well due to title 9.

Funny thing is that the biggest contribution for the renovation of scum devil stadium is 500K and that is from Brittney Graham

College fights get an automatic 15 minute misconduct (in addition to 5 for fighting), so that's not quite as bad as it sounds (like for an NHL game).

Are there any talks from going from Club to D1? I hate the fact that ASSU now has a nationally recognized hockey team that even comes out my way to play ECAC teams.

Title IX will prevent them from becoming a DI team.

asu also had a donor make it happen. Hockey is incredibly expensive, it has 18 scholarship spots which is the most of any NCAA sport besides football. Factor in the women's sports needed for Title IX, and the fact that admin has alienated the biggest boosters... zero percent chance we ever go D1

Just increase the dance team scholarships to make up for it. Hot girls that only need skimpy outfits - win, win right? :D

You guys don't know how exciting going to college hockey games can be. Quinnipiac is right around the corner from me and they are ranked like #5 in the country right now. Tough tickets to get but going to games is a blast.

Donor is definitely needed. One that will pay also for women’s hockey and women’s water polo. Then we get our D1 hockey. Sadly, The only mullets in Tucson are on people’s heads.

Will never happen. If there was ever a time when the hockey program had a chance to maybe go to division 1, it would of been during the 80's and 90's. Also, the new arena only sits 1000.

In September 2024, the Wildcats will become a primary tenant of the new Mosaic Quarter Iceplex near South Kino Parkway and Interstate 10. The team will move its home games into the facility's state-of-the-art 3,000 seat venue, which is currently under construction. The MQ Iceplex will house all UArizona hockey operations, practices, games and events.

I will ask that employee. I wonder if maybe the plan changed since that article is from 2021? Doesn't make sense to go from 3000 to 1000.

it appears the development is not on the original schedule.
The update indicates that predevelopment work on the Mosaic Quarter Iceplex and Mosaic Quarter Field House are progressing through the design and plan development stages. These Phase I facilities currently remain on track for a late 2025 opening while managing through supply chain challenges.
