Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
I've only been able to find some good pluots and red grapes. Anyone found any tasty fruit around Tucson? If so, what and where?
Erlich Bachmann: Richard wrote the code, yes, but the inspiration was clear. Let me ask you something. How fast do you think you could jack off every guy in this room? Cause I know how long it would take me. And I could prove it.

Bountiful baskets lost their supplier some months back and had to revamp their program. I haven't tried it since they've done that.scumdevils86 wrote:i haven't done it in a few months but the wife and i were doing the bountiful baskets produce co-op weekly or biweekly. they reduced a bunch of their sites over the summer and i hope it is coming back full force soon...

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
yeah i had to look it up and remembered what happened. i guess they're focusing on trying to get new sourcing for all their produce...more of it locally.
we'll see when it is back up and running. always had a good experience with it though. forced me to be creative with meal planning each week.

I get most of my produce from Sprouts. Best selection of apples and usually amazing grapes.

If I remember my time in Tucson, you can find nice peaches and melons down by the UofA.

Yeah without the bountiful basket I get 90% of my produce from Sprouts.

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
So I guess the problem is nobody is growing fruit in the desert, short of citrus season (which it isn't now)?

Has anyone tried POW-WOW? Produce on Wheels-Without Waste...
60# of produce for $10. I would like to try it and go in with a couple of families.

I go to Lei Lei's Asian for bulk stuff. They have peeled garlic for like a dollar. So awesome.

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
Who here prefers their fruit to be refrigerated and refreshingly cold? I always think people who say they like room-temperature fruit just have an affectation, like people who don't turn the AC on when it's hot because they "don't like air conditioning."

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
All fruit is at least 1.5 times better when refrigerated. Bananas are my only exception. Only freaks refrigerate a banana.
Edit: Frozen grapes are a great treat, nice texture and extra cold. Good for a healthy dessert.

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
only fruit i don't like cold is bananas and plums/nectarines/peaches. fresh ones anyway. like some pre-packed diced up peaches I'd only eat cold.
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.
i'll just go with fuck asu.

My wife insists that refrigerating strawberries "ruins" them at some basic level. Fine, then, I want chilled ruined strawberries, not pristine unchilled strawberries.

Bluemikey used to know a bunch of stuff.
I took a short visit to Seattle and there was really good cantelope and watermelon. Same in Sonoma County, CA along with peaches and oranges. All the melons, peaches etc I've eaten here have been pretty much tasteless.

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
Isn't that because local farmers in Seattle and Sonoma County are growing melons and peaches? The melons and peaches, pears, apples, etc. in my area are amazing, too. The desert has a different set of advantages that comes with the disadvantage of fruit bred for transport and shelf life, rather than taste.Daryl Zero wrote:Bluemikey used to know a bunch of stuff.

I wonder what she'd tell my wife about freezing hers.Longhorned wrote:My wife insists that refrigerating strawberries "ruins" them at some basic level. Fine, then, I want chilled ruined strawberries, not pristine unchilled strawberries.

Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
In this thread, I said a lot of wrong things about locally grown produce in Tucson. Time Market and Rincon Market (both closed for the pandemic) sell it, and it's great stuff. Also, of course, it's easy to grow amazing fruit in Wilcox.

I was turned on to mangosteens by a friend on this stint in Dubai. I’m guessing no chance of finding them around here (when shit gets back to semi-normal, yo)?

I wish bountiful baskets would come back to more than just 2 locations in town.
Re: Has Anyone In Tucson Found Good Fruit?
I've found a lot of less known tropical fruit at Sprouts. I don't remember specifically seeing mangosteen but I would ask them for sureByJoveByJingle wrote:I was turned on to mangosteens by a friend on this stint in Dubai. I'm pretty positive I've seen mangosteen at sprouts. They always have some different stuff. Them and AJ's.
