From Wikipedia: "Spiranac's self-promotion has brought criticism and raised the question of what she brings to golf.[29] Spiranac's appearance on the May 2016 cover of Golf Digest, having never finished in the top 300 of the NCAA ranking, and having missed the cut at her then-only professional event, sparked controversy.[30] In its nearly seven decades of publication, the magazine featured a woman on its cover only 23 times, with eleven of them being professional female golfers.[29] This raised the question of what she had actually accomplished on the golf course to warrant such attention."

What is it with Fine wine? The most expensive sip I've had was from a $650 bottle. Didn't taste $640 better than what you get a Trader Joe's. Four figure wine sells because it's a status symbol, correct? Age it longer, use gold paint on the label, bottle it Provence. It's an agreed upon way to impress your yacht club "friends" who really aren't your friends but social contrasts by which you comparatively assess your own status. Who's the joke on?

I can taste the difference between a $15 bottle and a $60 bottle of wine, and I am by no means a wine connoisseur. And I will say that in 99% of cases, the more expensive wine is 4-5 times better than the cheap stuff.

What I can’t taste is the difference between a $60 bottle and a $600 bottle. But keep in mind that if you’re talking restaurant prices, the mark up is ridiculous. I’ve seen bottles I can get anywhere for $40-$50 go for $300+ at fine dining establishments. It’s pretty fucking dumb.

I don't drink any more at restaurants, but liked to bring my own in, and just pay the corking charge. Like Chi says, the markup is just crazy.

Similar to when you take your car into the shop. What they charge for auto parts is twice what you would pay at Autozone. And no, you can't bring your own parts in.

Dunno. Many times very expensive wine tastes well worth it. The problem is it's not dependable. My most cherished experience with wine in my mouth was a French Pinot Noir the name of which I don't remember .... and couldn't pronounce if I did .... and cannot financially justify trying to recapture because Pinot is like a bi-polar psycho bitch high-maintenance girlfriend who is either a forgettable movie or the fuck of the century. As to the social dimension, if you're drinking wine for anyone other than yourself you're a tool.

You need a non-snobbish, trustable expert wine person who curates the best wines they can get their hands on at all price points. In Tucson, that's Rum Runner and Time Market, for example. Once you learn the labels for the best cheap wines there, you can pick up the same bottle when you spot it at Trader Joe's. But you can't just buy blind at Trader Joe's because the good cheap bottles are like a needle in a haystack of undrinkable cheap bottles.

I'm not a wine drinker at all but the biggest difference always seems to be between the $8 bottle and the $40 bottle and not between the $40 and the $400.

So the taste to cost relationship works like an y=ln(x) graph where the y-axis is taste quality and the x-axis is cost.

I am a wine drinker. While I love all varietals, Pinot Noir is my love. And I can tell you there isn't a Pinot less than $15 I would drink - they are all terrible. And while the $15-$20 has some good ones, the vast majority aren't. You really have to get above $30 (and probably a lot more) to get a transcendent Pinot. The reason has to do with yields (the less, the better), locations (there aren't many great locations and there is a lot of Pinot being grown where it shouldn't) and, frankly, time and effort and talent. It takes a lot of work and care and talent to make a great Pinot. So, yeah. Cost matters a lot with certain varietals. I've often read - and repeated - that if you are forced to drink a cheap wine, get a Sauvignon Blanc (white) or Cabernet (red), there is a lot more room for error there and you have to really try to not make at least a drinkable one.

I would go higher on the low end of your scale. There's less of a difference between $75 and $400 (except Pinot or First-Growth Bordeaux) and much bigger differences between $40 and $75.

I grabbed a half full jar of Tostitos cheese dip out of the back of my fridge that’s been hiding behind a bunch of shit for the last 12 weeks at least.

I opened it up, expecting to be truly horrified by the moldy science experiment I was about to find inside. Instead, it was so so much worse…

IT WAS PERFECTLY FINE

What kind of toxic sludge did I buy and eat that won’t go bad after a quarter of a year?? And what the fuck did it do to my insides??

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but isn't that experience exactly what you'd expect from Tostitos Cheese Dip?

It's like when you see negative Yelp reviews about McDonalds. You know why you went there, and it wasn't to get a tasty burger. Maybe just be happy you didn't get e coli and calm down about the taste and sevice you received.

Again, I don't mean this disrespectfully, but I feel like my standing expectation of Tostitos Cheese Dip is that it will exit your body in the same basic state as it entered.

Nope, definitely not what I was expecting.

I was expecting at the very least that whatever water was in there would have separated from the oil and milk fats and all the fake plastic fillers leaving a toxic liquid at the top and a hunk of unidentifiable solids at the bottom.

At the worst, I figured it would look like an ASU frat boy’s Petri dish bacterial results from an STD test.

Jerk ;)
