I've been to every one of those nine restaurants.

I think its a stretch to call the Bum Steer a restaurant, but they had food and it wasn't bad. I guess it was a pretty good student lunch destination.

I didn't like the Olive Garden. They blamed a smoking ban on cutting their profit margins? Did they require people to buy and consume packets of cigarettes with each meal or something? WTF? Smoking bans might well have temporarily reduced their their takings until people got used to it, but it wouldn't affect their profit margin per cover. Sounds like they were looking for an excuse to shut down and decided to blame it on the the council. Personally, I go out to restaurants more often now that there are no longer assholes at the next table blowing smoke in my face.

Hot Bagel Bakery, on Speedway, Bum Steer, Gordo's and Good Earth (way ahead of its time).
I'm surprised the author can't find any info on the Hot Bagel Bakery. Perhaps he needs to ask around the local Jewish Community. I'm surprised they qualify as a 'lost' restaurant. Pity.

I remember that on Sundays you couldn't get anywhere near the place. Their various flavored cream cheeses were great - and the salmon was terrific. And the onion bagels, the pumpernickel bagels. Oh man. Loved 'em. (I'm not Jewish by the way, goys can like bagels too, can't they?)

Every time some ijit in Aussieland tries to sell me a dinner roll shaped like a donut and calling it a bagel I think of the HBB and laugh in their face. Australia, and specifically Melbourne, and even more specifically Caulfield where I live, has the largest Jewish community in the southern hemisphere, you'd think they would know how to make bagels, but no. Maybe its a New York thing, and not a European. I dunno.

I think you're right. It's like pizza crust, they say it's the water in New York. I don't know how they pulled it off in Tucson, but those were top-notch bagels. I did a summer semester in Paris way back and the program classes were located in the Jewish quarter - Le Marais. I don't remember having any bagels, but we'd get these pita-type falafel sandwiches everyday after class that were incredible.

The falafel sandwiches in the Marais are out of this world. I avoid the long lines at lunch and grab one or two around 3:30. Hang out with me long enough, I'll show you how to get fat.

That's great you know what I'm talking about LH. I've never had falafel as good since (not surprising given my 20-year exile in Idaho I suppose). There was a spicy little drizzle over the top that was so tasty. We were absolutely addicted.

They're definitely hard to come by. Especially a good everything, my favorite, coated in all the little seeds and other bits. Most around here are pretty bald which defeats the purpose for someone who orders an everything because I like a lot of flavor.

In case you dont know about La Parilla Suiza

Man who peeped up Tucson woman’s dress given probation

A 44-year-old Vail man was placed on four years’ probation Friday for looking up a woman's dress at a home furnishing store.

Agustin Gonzales Gongora could have received up to 2 1/2 years in prison after being convicted of voyeurism by a Pima County Superior Court jury in December.

Deputy Pima County Attorney Jared Kreamer Hope showed jurors a store security tape showing Gongora dropping to all fours while walking behind the victim on Sept. 8, 2011, and looking up her dress.

He also played Gongora’s recorded interview with police during which he said he had been shopping for a wedding anniversary present and had been overcome with romantic feelings.

(PLEASE SHARE IN TUCSON & PHOENIX)
Emery's Thoughts at this Moment: It really irks me that convicted SEX OFFENDER Augustine Gongora who is the owner of La Parilla Suiza Mexican Restaurants in Tucson and Phoenix is trying to appeal his sentence for looking under women's dresses. Gongora and his attorney claim that because the victims were in public places like Home Goods and other stores, he had every right to follow them around the store, get on his hands and knees and look under their skirts. Really? What a Freak!! He has admitted doing this three separate times. He has probably done this sick act many more times than is on public record. Recently, he transferred all of his assets into someone else's name in Mexico. He most likely did this in order to avoid losing money if sued in a civil lawsuit which he deserves. So, every time you patronize La Parilla Suiza, restaurants you are supporting a freaky sex offender and one of his relatives in Mexico. Please repost this. He needs to admit what he's doing is sick, and address it by going to some serious counseling. And most importantly, he needs to apologize to his victims instead of acting so smug in court and having his family shoot daggers at the victims in court and stage crying acts. How can they keep defending an,
"On your knee crawling, under skirt peeping, taco making, money hiding, convicted sex offender livin' weirdo???!!!"
Keri Lombardo Sanders May I also add that his son was drunk driving last year with no license and no insurance and hit a van filled with employees from the mines. A couple of them died they rest were disabled for life and he is out free. Disgusting family. The Apple did not fall far the tree with them !!! They make me sick.

We have a restaurant family exactly like that in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.

Voyeurism is a sexual perversion that I can't begin to understand. Long before porn on the internet, there were magazines that showed all the anatomical parts, and with poses to clarify the details. What would drive somebody to have to go to a Home Depot and fall to the floor to look up at a person's thighs and underwear? I don't get S&M, either, but at least I understand that people enjoy it together, and certainly can feel free to do it together.

Went to Mi Nidito for the first time yesterday, after years of not having the patience to wait for a table. Had the Presidential plate. It was very good, but it didn't blow me away. In fact, I enjoyed the last two meals I had at Poco & Moms and Guadalajara Grill more.

Unfair comparison. Who says Bill Clinton knows what to order at Mi Nidito? The presidential plate is just a bunch of random antojitos. The reason for waiting an hour for a table at Mi Nidito (hopefully less, sometimes more) is carne secca.

I really thought El Charro was known for the best Carne Seca in town. I'll be sure to try it at Mi Nidito my next visit, cause I do love me some Carne Seca.

Just spent Thanksgiving week in Tucson. Too many family obligations and such to get to Mi Nidito. Mucho regret. Did take the kids to El Torero for lunch which was super old school for me going back to my childhood, but they were out of carne seca. Ate at Casa Molina (the folks are off of Rosa's for some vague reason) on Campbell. Our old waiter Roy took care of us. He's been there since 1972 and used to wait on my grandparents too. So that was kind of fun. My food was awful. Had a carne seca burro. Chewy, fatty, gristley. Flavorless. The friendly Canadian GF spit it out in her napkin. She did not buy in to my love for carne seca. I choked it down enchilada style. Sad.

Had lunch one day at Schlomo and Vito's on the SW corner of Campbell and Sunrise. Food was great. Service was friendly enough, but took forever even with nobody in the restaurant. Mom says it's like that. Wierd. Hit up the Sausage Deli for an Italian Grinder for the first time in a couple of decades. It was great and just as I remembered. Everybody enjoyed that outing. Had a couple of really good sushi rolls and beers in the sun at RA in La Encantada with the GF. The prices were comparable and the sushi far better than anything in Boise.

My brother, sister and I hosted a 50th anniversary dinner for my parents at North on Wednesday night. I believe there were 14 of us total. We had the private room with a set menu of choices. Couple of pastas, NY steak, salmon, apps, soup, salad and deserts. Cocktails. It was all excellent. Staff did a fantastic job, everyones' food was great and all were happy. Great time and very appreciative folks. Very pleased with how it all worked out.

Not happy about the lack of carne seca. And I just realized I forgot to try a Sonoran dog . . .

Yeah, I know. My folks started going to Rosa's in my absence whenever it came online so I've been there a few times over the years and always found it very pedestrian. Casa Molina, you have to understand, was our place way back in the day when it was on Campbell and the Rillito, sort of where TJ's is now. It was a cool old restaurant back then. There used to be this old funky little adobe artisans village there on the river and Casa Molina was part of it. Never been the same once they moved - which I realize has probably been 25 years . . . It was a nostalgic choice, but not good at all.

Went to 3 new restaurants over the past week. Tucson just got put on the BBQ map overnight!

Brothers Johns is in the old Wildcat House. They did an incredible renovation and the BBQ is delicious. Huge bar with tons of beers on tap and all sorts of bourbon. $8-20 meals

Image

Check out their smokers that are outside the building. Apparently they can cook 1500+ lbs of meat at once in these

Image

Went to Illegal Petes Sunday for the ASU game. Served breakfast until 1 and had drink specials all day. 1 bar downstairs and 1 upstairs, huge patio and an upper deck overlooking Main Gate Square. Might be the nicest bar on University now. They do tacos, burritos, salads, etc Chipotle style. Everything is $4-9

Image

Then we went across the street to Red's Smokehouse. Owned by Ramiro Scavo from Pasco's. Menu is always changing depending on what they cooked or have ready. I had the half chicken which fell off the bone. He is perfecting his corn bread recipe and gave me a sample. Some sort of agave and brown sugar coating on it which was phenomenal. Brisket and pulled pork was amazing as well. $6-12 for meals and $3-4 sides. Indoor/Outdoor bar, tons of TVs and lots of outdoor seating. They also sell beer/growlers that you can take home. Capping fee like Tap & Bottle if you want it right away

Image

The man and his custom make smoker

My new favorite restaurant is Falora Pizza located in the Joesler Broadway Village. Owned by the guy who started Zoom Juice & Sparkroot. The bread just melts in your mouth & the pizza is so freakin good. I had pretty much given up on pizza in Tucson. You have to great reservations though because it's pretty small.

Just got back from dinner at Wild Garlic again. This was the fourth time I've been there since my sister-in-law started working there. I've ordered something different every time and still haven't had anything that was anything short of delicious. My favorite restaurant in Tucson is still Chef Alisha's, but Wild Garlic is probably pulling up second at this point.

Yeah. Bosnian. Really good food. Compares very favorably to the nice restaurant I ate at when I was in Croatia.

They don't, and as similar as the foods were in Croatia, I think there are some differences in food culture. Very similar flavor profiles, though, and the quality at Alisha's is top notch. Everything (sausages, breads, I think even the cheeses) is hand-made at the restaurant. I'll paste a link to their menu below.

Alisah doesn't have a liquor license, but they do allow patrons to bring their own bottle of wine. Of course, if you know the owner he may in fact have a bottle of Slivovitz or Rakiya for close friends and family.

I didn't even know it was a liquor. Just assumed it was a dish. Shows how much I know! Still, great food, great atmosphere.

We could ask her on facebook, but while I love Klaudija*, I hate facebook too much to take it that far.

* I'd trade an entire municipal water treatment facility for one bath with Klaudija.**

My wife is from Macedonia and my father in law makes his own grape brandy, or Rakiya. Several times I've brought it back to the states in a large plastic water bottle.

They also use it there for other purposes. A brandy back rub down for a high fever is common. It's so cheap to make my mother in law uses it to sanitize her house like its Lysol.

Have you tried the lamb dinner special they have once a month? It's awesome! On their regular menu you can't go wrong with the mixed grill, but the Bosnian goulash is my absolute favorite.

I don't usually like lamb, but I had the special last time I went and it was really good. I usually just get the combo plate and split it with whoever I go with, but I have enjoyed the few times I've ordered from the menu.

What???? Don't like lamb? Better watch out...

The woman is Lee Lin Chin, the main newsreader on Australia's SBS News. The helicopter 'commander' is Sam Kekovitch, a former AFL football player turned commentator who has been doing the annual lamb promotion videos for over a decade. Some of the personalities are reconizable to Austrailans - Cricketers, Rugby League Players, etc. The Chef is George Calombaris, MasterChef Australia judge and international super chef.

And yes, the Vegans are up in arms about it.

BK owner to open giant submarine-shaped restaurant

Image

If you've driven down First Avenue lately, you may have noticed a massive silver submarine where El Mezón del Cobre used to be. It's not a mirage: The structure is actually a new restaurant by Benjamín Galaz, the owner of BK Carne Asada and Hot Dogs.

The restaurant is called El Berraco, which according to Galaz is a Colombian term similar to the word "badass" in English. When it opens in a couple weeks, El Berraco will serve seafood from countries along an old Pacific Ocean submarine route that skimmed the coasts of Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico and more.

To develop the menu, Galaz brought up chef Claudia Lopez Burquez of Girasole restaurant in Hermosillo, Sonora. She's put together a playful mishmash of casual dishes a'la BK as well as more colorful gourmet fare.

Highlights include fried octopus tacos, whole coconuts stuffed with shrimp and a "Ceviche Route" appetizer with side-by-side ceviches from Peru, Colombia and Mexico. There's plenty of oyster and shrimp and even a whole grilled octopus, but you'll also see Sonoran dishes like bacon-wrapped guero peppers stuffed with smoked marlin.

There will also be a full bar, with 20 beers on tap and more than 40 bottled beers from Mexico and all over South America. (In case you were wondering, the legendary BK michelada will get an upgrade with fresh shrimp and seafood options.) The restaurant will stay open until 1 a.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and midnight the rest of the week.

"I've been in the food industry for 25 years," Galaz, who is from Tucson and Sonora, said. "I started with hot dogs, then selling carne asada tacos. Now we're trying to come up with a new concept."

Galaz said he's spent the past year and a half working on El Berraco, and even set up his own welding workshop in the process. The skilled welder performed much of the remodeling work himself, which included making port hole windows and covering the building with stainless steel paneling. The inside of the building looks like a cross between a Mariscos Chihuahua restaurant and the submarine scene from "Titanic," with colorful benches and moody dark neon lighting.

When it's done, the dining room will also feature a wall-length digital fish tank, hand-drawn submarine posters and deep sea divers' helmets on the walls. Galaz says if the concept is successful, he plans to make it into a national franchise.

In other BK news:
Don't give up hope! Plans are still on for a downtown-area BK, just not until 2017. Galaz said he's got a large property at East 19th Street and South Park Avenue, which he plans to turn into a full-scale restaurant and bar after he finishes El Berraco.

Prank phone calls to Jack In The Box causes shattered windows
People are making prank phone calls to restaurants in Tucson, but it's anything but a laughing matter.

It's actually illegal and Tuesday, a local Jack In The Box was temporarily closed, with smashed windows. Every window at the store on Campbell near Ft. Lowell was broken and boarded up.

A Tucson police report said a man who claimed to be with a fire suppression company called Jack In The Box after midnight. The man said the gas pressure from inside the business was rising. He told the employees to pull the emergency fire lever, get out of the restaurant and bust out the windows to keep the building from exploding.

Employees told him they were uncomfortable breaking windows. The man told them to do it anyway for safety's sake. The employees grabbed rocks and broke all the windows by the time Tucson fire and police showed up.

Sal Panuco was in the parking lot as the windows were boarded up and employees cleaned up the shattered glass.

“First and foremost, I would get out of the building instead of breaking anything,” he said.

Baggin's Gourmet sandwiches is located next to the Jack In The Box.

“It's unfortunate that people are pulling pranks like that,” said John Murphy, who runs Baggin's Gourmet. “I would just hope people would have enough sense to think about the staff and themselves first.”

Police say several other Jack In The Box restaurants received similar calls from a blocked number.

Tucson is not the only place getting calls like this. Employees at a Burger King in Morro Bay, Calif. took similar action over the weekend.

I remember grabbing an orange tray and sliding down the line to order like it was yesterday. Mmmmm Green/Red Chili. Gordo's needs a comeback.

Went to The Coronet Cafe for Brunch on Saturday. 4th Ave & the Downtown under pass by the Coronado Hotel. Watched 4 bicycle cops chase a bum down who had a 40oz beer. They made him sit down on the curb while they poured it out.

Anyways, excellent food and drinks. Really unique menu for Tucson

Love the Coronet. We used to stop by for brunch after our bike rides on the weekends. The patio is wonderful and the owner did a great job remodeling the inside. Need to drop by again soon.

May reopen at some point with a different owner?:

Fans of Tucson’s toasted sub franchise Cheba Hut got some bad news last night via Facebook. Owners Steve and Colleen Bigelow announced that after over six years of slinging sandwiches, the location at 1820 E. 6th Street will be permanently closing on Friday, Dec. 5 at 10 p.m. due to “uncontrollable circumstances.”

Owner Steve Bigelow says those circumstances amounted to a disagreement between the company and him as the franchise owner, which he describes as still a “mom and pop operation.”

“Me, as the owner and landlord, and corporate could not come to terms to keep Cheba Hut open at this location.”

Though Bigelow says he’s unsure when or where Cheba Hut might open under new ownership, you can stop into Bigelow’s Cheba Hut from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5 to say goodbye and get one last AK-47 pinner (8” French dip sub).

Review of ex-Wildcat House now Brother John's (BroJos):

Seems pricey for a lunch destination to go all the way to N Stone.

The food is pretty damn good though! ^ Really did a nice job on the remodel.

Shlomo & Vitos closed Feb 6, citing rising food and labor costs but anyone who ever went there knows it was the management, staff and lack of customers.

Bumsteds on 4th Ave is being forced out of their lease this Sunday and Lindy's in moving in next month.

Yeah I saw some comments from the owner of Shlomo and Vitos whining about the minimum wage and I just had to  Apparently they charged upwards of $15 for sandwiches there and yet somehow couldn't absorb paying less than $2 more in wages after 4 weeks. Give me a break. But I did see that the owner's Porsche is in good shape as well as his mansion in the foothills.
