Smart.

Rent before buying. Get to know the area.

My daughter bought her house site unseen in NC, and I told her the same thing, rent to know the area. She did fine though. None of my adult kids listen to me.

Looks like a pretty nice apartment complex although they do seem a bit small but laid out very nicely.

I hope that it works out for them - and appreciates quickly.

Me, I'd be claustrophobic within weeks...

We've been planning our retirement home and I'm thinking about a 1,000 sq ft 2 bedroom 1 bath house on a 5 acre lot.

We had one bath in our condo in Denver. Did that suck.

My wife and her 3 sisters grew up in house that size with 3 bedrooms. 5 women and one bath - I don't know how they did it (the girls were spread apart about 17 years at least)
We are the people our parents warned us about.

They lived in Havelock near New Bern. Really nice area, outside of the humidity and being in Trumpistan. My daughter intended to keep the house when they retired and move there, but being born and raised in coastal California she can't deal with the humidity there. It's like extreme summer 6 months out of the year. She's a Navy wife, and now in Japan and looking elsewhere to retire. Trying to talk her into the big island, but like I said, my kids ignore what I say.

I'm planning on a small guest house as well along with a large workshop.

We're not retired yet (still have about 9 or 10 years to go), but we did downsize when the kids moved out. We bought a 1200 sf house, but it has a 400 sf bonus room (my office/TV room). We're on 4 acres and I converted some of the stable area (we don't want horses) into a workshop and workout area. We love it!

About to help chaperone over 100 junior high kids to DC for the week. It's going to be...interesting, to say the least. Report time is 1:30 am.

I once had to chaperone a middle school camping trip. At one point I started thinking my day would be much more pleasant and tolerable if I was attacked by a pack of rabid coyotes.

Also it’s no one’s fault, more my own inability to stop being a happy soldier, set boundaries on my time, and take a bit more autonomy for my wellbeing and life back.

God me too.

I'm probably about 2 years out. I've won several awards for performance lately-probably because I sweat things I shouldn't a bit much.

I work with quite a few folks who just do the bare minimum.

My supervisor just had a chat with me about the fact that he has no worries about how much I show up because he knows I've got my program wired tight. He's actually encouraging me to show up just whenever I need to rather than the expected start and stop times.

For some reason, I can't wrap my head around this paradigm and feel like I need to be there at the expected times.

Hey, I did my share!

Although one of the leads shared with me a comment the old director made about me and other employees to pass onto the new director.

He said: [Merkin] works to live, does not live to work.

He knew me well! No wonder I don't have any money either.

Maybe that's why Euros are happier and the US is not even top 20 in happiness.

Not once since I retired 4/30/2020 have I wished I was working.

I survived. Two days where I was awake for more than 24 hours because of travel, a delay in Dallas because of Tornadoes, having one kid getting talked to by the police because "he didn't think he had to pay if they gave him his pretzel bucket first before paying", and we arrived back at school at 230 local time, which was 5:30 east coast time. I probably had 25k steps a day, 4 hours of sleep, and will probably commit to do it again when they ask me in December. But I need a drink.
