Wild Jaguar living in Tucson Mountains

Post by the real dill »

While I doubt it's the only one, pretty cool story. They have ranged into AZ for a long time.

America's only wild jaguar caught on video

or the first time, viewers are getting the chance to glimpse the secretive world of 'El Jefe.'
In a video released Wednesday by Conservation CATalyst and the Center for Biological Diversity, the jaguar can be seen walking through a forest and across a stream in the Santa Rita Mountains just outside Tucson.

“These glimpses into his behavior offer the keys to unlocking the mysteries of these cryptic cats” Aletris Neils, executive director of Conservation CATalyst, said in a statement. “We are able to determine he is an adult male jaguar, currently in prime condition. Every new piece of information is important for conserving northern jaguars and we look forward to building upon on these data so that we can collectively make better decisions on how to manage these fascinating and endangered cats.”

They have collected game trail cam evidence for a few years, but not video until now.

Probably the last one too, since they closed off the border to wildlife migration with that ridiculous wall.

It's only a matter of time until someone tries to kill it.

I have a friend who hunts that posted on Facebook that he saw this cat in the Santa Ritas a few years ago, reported it to Game & Fish, but they didn't believe him.

I believe that. I work with a couple guys that hunt. They claim they have trail cam pics of a jag as well. They reported it to game and fish. But game and fish tell them there is no more jags in Arizona. My guess is they are in no hurry to get back into the jag business after they killed the last one the way they did.

I could have sworn that I saw a Jaguar in the Rincons in Reddington Pass at Tanque Verde Falls back in the late 70's. But I didn't really get a good look, and the reality is that it was probably a Ring Tailed Cat. Mostly what I saw was a variegated tail and a big dark shadow.

It just seemed way too big for a Ring Tail when I saw it, but probably I wasn't quite fully 'compos mentis' at the time, if you catch my drift. It may have been a couple of them throwing a big shadow.
