Yikes, nothing you said resembles anything I've ever heard from at least 20 former employees I've interviewed or trained. Not to mention you probably make 5 time as much as a regular branch employee and have a completely different role and job. Anyone who gets a 25% bonus is massively disconnected from regular workers in a large corporation.

wat. i hate whiners too. and also aren't you saying your observation is reality too with your anecdotal experience? i think you're getting me confused with someone too. managing people is definitely a skill though...i wouldn't look down on that.

I don't want to deal with the daily HR realities of employees.

What I am saying is I am not disconnected from the reality. I started at the very, very, very bottom. From a career in radio that needed to end, I had no connections. I strapped on the headset, took call center calls, and maximized my every opportunity. At Bank One then at Wells. And I can see the negative and positive of this corporation. But the point is no one person can decide the entire corporate culture of an organization by personal observation. I appreciate their active pursuit of diversity and community service. Beyond that, it is really going to be LOB manager to LOB manager. But the culture overall has been very willing to work with me and make me a better employee. Sure, that helps them. It's not altruism. But I have seen true culture problems (Bank One after the dreaded FIrst Chicago NBD merger...google it, First National Bank of Arizona and the Lambs).

I have gotten to see the "culture" a little deeper by being involved in the workout of two failed banks, and the risk workout of others. That is where you see the bones, the decision making, etc. The Community Banking failure at Wells under Tolstedt is a great example of how senior leadership can destroy a culture. But I can tell you the Wells underwriting culture is much more conservative (in the good way)...product risk over profit motive...than any of the majors and minors I worked through.

No one ever comes up to someone and says "Hey...my time at "major corporation in news for mistake" was actually pretty good, or not bad", so you only ever hear the "God, that sucked" people. Happiness is silent, misery is loud.

My anecdotal experience is I have seen the best and worst of this corporation. But that is not culture. That is a bad manager. How the corporation responds, or what they are trying to execute, is the culture. As the majors go, WF is a San Francisco bank, vs the others in New York or elsewhere. There is an impact in where the major executives live...

I'm always confused by this. My credit union offers pretty much every service (local and community based and guided mind you) that any large hell of a bank does. Trust/estate planning, retirement and educational planning, large commercial loans, multiple types of mortgages, many more options with vehicle/rv/boat/motorcyle/atv type loans, rewards programs, discounts in the community.... it really doesn't even compare. And like I said, it is all local and community based for a non profit. No brainer

I have a house that we're renting in North Carolina so having everything under chase is preferred given the number of accounts we have. The property manager requires a "local branch" for the direct deposit. Chase fits that need for us.

There is no such thing as a no-brainer in financial services. If so, there'd only be one kind of institution...credit unions.

The bundle aspect is definitely one...a credit union cannot touch the mortgage rate I am getting because they don't self fund. Anytime there is an outside/secondary source, there is an issue. Banks very much treat loyal customers like Credit Unions...the ones who pay the freight are the drop ins with just a checking account, or what have you.

It's been a while...I stepped out of banking for a while to be a risk consultant...since I didn't get employee pricing. I remember being really fired up to go to Desert Schools...then finding out what I had with Chase and Wells was just as good and not wanting to go through the switch.

Tried coming at me with a BINSR from hell...wanted me to replace the aluminum wiring that was standard for 1978 builds (copper shortage) and pretty much the entire roof, as well as a bunch of nitpicky shit, but done by a professional. The aluminum wiring has been sprayed down to reduce/eliminate the issue that some aluminum wires had (if you read the wiki on this, you might wonder how I am still alive). So it is a non-item. I am not retrofitting my house to be a 2017 build...it is priced where it is, in a neighborhood full of the same builds, with no pockmarks on the map from burned down homes, because it is an older home. The roof? The roof works, asshole. It does its job. If you want to shingle over it, it is about $4,000, but again...not for me to do.

My response was "I will reattach flood lights on exterior (I forgot to do that when I unattached them for painting and, no, I am not hiring an electrician to do it) and will re-attach condensation pipe from A/C (and, no, not with a HVAC specialist)." I also wrote an email to pass to the buyer that ended with:

So there’s where I am…I will do a 2 year warranty, and then I am not spending one more dime over the now $9,000+ that I have been asked to expend on a workman, functioning, maintained 1978 home in a market that more than supports the value. If there are any real problems, the FHA appraiser will note them, as we know FHA appraisers do. But beyond that, it is time to either accept this warranty offer and me paying all of their closing costs, sign the BINSR, and move to appraisal, or it is time to move onto the next buyer.

I really am no longer sure that the latter wouldn’t be better for me.

They accepted my counter offer. BINSR in hand. Asshole trying to use normal issues to re-negotiate the deal that I have already bent over backwards for, costing myself a few thousand dollars for the sake of expediency/make my purchase go smooth. I really, at the point I wrote this, was hoping they would cancel so I could get out of the help I extended and get a real buyer in.

Whatever company holds this note is in trouble. These people are operating on razor thin margins with 0% down, no closing costs, sweating paying for an appraisal...

My kid got invited to a birthday party at a movie theater. Invite says 11:30am. We get there at 11:30 and there's no one around. Turns out they were watching the movie. It started at 10:00. So they intentionally invited us to show up late so they wouldn't have to buy us a ticket. The mother had been texting with my wife even during the movie and never once said, "Oh I'm so sorry! It should have said 10:00 to see the movie."

They played Musical Chairs and Simon Says. Then they threw some pizza and cake at us and said they'd give out some tokens so the kids could play video games. Two hours later and no tokens ever appeared. Instead they had their shitty ungrateful kid open his presents for 45 minutes.

My kids are no longer going to birthday parties unless I know the parents. These low rent whiskey tango assholes are never again suckering me into buying a $20 gift and giving up the better part of my Saturday.

That is ridiculous.

And that kind of reputation travels quickly in parent circles. They'll be lucky to draw the kid's best friend next year.

Either do a regular house party and save the money or go to a theater and buy tickets and tokens for everyone. Kids birthday parties are, no doubt, ridiculous, and more about adults than kids...another dick measuring contest. They should be scaled back. But if you have a movie theater party, there best well be a damn movie.

The majority of it is slop on a plate. No GI distress this time other than the routine bloat from a salt load. It just hit me last night how different your average neighborhood Chinese food place is from some of the restaurants that cater specifically the immigrant population.

It's like a carb loaded, fried greasy, sugary sauce, high caloric mess of "food" at most places. And then you look at the bill and realize that you could've actually had a decent meal somewhere else for the price.

Price wise, its why I rarely eat pasta or steak out; so cheap for the restuarant to source with high profit margins and generally I can cook better at home. That's the one exception with Chinese food, I can't do it. It comes out terrible all the times I've tried to cook any thing Asian.

Yeap. I don't go out much anymore but I follow generally the same philosophy. There's so many things that (unless it is some 4-5 star restaurant with a very unique menu and ingredients) I can generally make at home for significantly less money. I only have eaten americanized chinese food recently when it was for lunch. Because even if it is mediocre food it is hard to beat their lunch specials usually. $5-7 for an entree, rice, egg roll and soup usually.

I think the wife and I are going to make some char siu style stuffed bao this weekend. She's the breadmaker and I do the meat. Good times.

Running while wearing flip flops on a slick tile, no bueno.

Now wife has a jones fracture (proximal phalanx 5th toe, left midfoot) and is in a left foot cast for 12 weeks, strict non weight bearing for 6. She is devastated that her summer is over. No swimming, no hiking, no long road trips, etc. the only saving grace which she has yet to realize is that she was .5cm away from needing ASAP surgical pinning and didn't tear her Achilles, dorsalis, or ATF ligaments.

Not really venting so much as it is going to get really tough here with a 3mo old, and 3 year old, and a wife who can only get around on crutches but can't carry babies while traveling on said crutches. I'm going to have to be in charge of cooking, cleaning, taking the oldest two and from preschool and working my 60/80hr a week job.

I know it's temporary, and we'll get through, and I'm happy to do it for my lovely wife, but the road ahead appears daunting from the current vantage point.

Bear down.

When I have a cart full of food, and the person behind me only has a couple items, I always ask if they want to go in front of me.

With the caveat they are not writing a check.

Honestly, why does anyone need checks?

If you do need a check, is it a crime to actually fill out all the details while the cashier is checking you out? The name of the store, the date, and your signature are not going to change between the time before you check out, and after you check out.

Don't even need that. Just ask for a direct deposit form from your bank. My institution doesn't even give out void or blank or temporary checks anymore to do this with.

I agree. I think massive, somber displays of grief with tons of people (and expensive coffins and a corpse taking up space in the ground) to be rather unnecessary. Have a big party and laugh it up when I die then put me in a box and cremate me and be done with it.

Government transactions like renewing passports, need checks.

Churches and non profits still need checks for your benefit and theirs. So they can properly receipt you for your taxes and they can't afford to give away a percent of their receipts to credit card companies and other institutions.

Checks are very much still needed today for most people.

As far as I can tell, a check is just a document printed by a company that isn't even your bank. Other than the look of it, what about a check is inherently valid? Why can't somebody just hand write on a sheet of paper all of the relevant information, including the routing and account number, and hand that over to the cashier with his driver's license?

Most people I deal with don't want any tracking, or don't have bank accounts to begin with. Many have poor English language skills and come from countries that don't trust banks.

I have not written a check in at least 5 years. Also do not recall having to write one for my last passport renewal 3 years ago. Shit, it'd be a hell of a scavenger hunt to even locate my checkbook...

the MICR line on the bottom of a check has special magnetic ink that can be picked up by scanners. if you just printed your regular MICR line on the bottom of a piece of paper and deposited it at the bank the scanner the teller uses would likely reject it as fraudulent.

For me it's key to be cremated as soon as possible so I don't have to endure lying around unable to talk.
