This has been the deadliest July for tornadoes in over 30 years. :(

Our fall-like summer continues. Highs won't get out of the upper 60s today. Usually at the end of July it's in the upper 80s.

Merk posted about that a few spots up. That is crazy though, a bad beat for sure. Losing a family member in that fashion would be horrible. Enjoying a day at the beach and then...

The weather was pretty nippy this morning in NoVa. Like 48 degrees at Dulles this AM. Pretty weird for late July when it's peak swamp-ass season.

Two hurricanes are poised to hit Hawaii: http://www.salon.com/2014/08/06/hawaii_ ... socialflow
Hawaii isn’t known for its hurricanes, which is why it is so remarkable that two, Hurricane Iselle and Hurricane Julio, are scheduled to hit the state this week. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the entire chain of islands for Thursday, and school officials from Hawaii County and Maui County have already cancelled classes that day.

Hawaii is protected from the major storms because of something called the Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough, or TUTT. Meteorologist Dr. Steve Lyons explains:

[TUTT] rules the high levels of our weather atmosphere there and creates winds typically too fast for development of a hurricane and too fast for an approaching hurricane from the east to remain a hurricane. That is why quite a few remnant tropical circulations go by south, north, or occasionally through the islands, but rarely does a tropical storm or hurricane reaches [sic] them.

But paradise is not always paradise. Hawaii is vulnerable when a strong hurricane develops to the southwest, then moves north when the TUTT is displaced slightly north of its normal location. This is by far most common in El Nino years.

In fact, hurricanes have only directly hit Hawaii three times since 1950, although when one has hit, it has wrought damage. Hurricane Iniki killed six people and destroyed 1,400 houses in 1992.

The Department of Emergency Management in Honolulu has recommended that residents stock up on a week’s worth of supplies.

My in-laws are currently prepping their cabin on the Snake for a fire. Lewiston, ID is about the break the record for most 100+ days in a summer. Some dry lightening storms moved through last weekend and sparked a bunch of fires.

If it's not going to rain, might as well be nice. I for one have loved the weather this year. Although my peach and cherry trees are just starting to show signs of dropping their leaves, apparently since they fruited so early.

Actually been raining. Already most places in Tucson have recorded 1.5-2 inches of rain in August. Pair that with most places getting nearly 2 inches in July too this has been a good monsoon. Needed it after the first 6 months of the year where we got less than a half inch of rain total.

Two rain gauges closest to me say 3.04" & 3.17" for the month of August (1.63" & 1.77" for July). Sunday night was crazy.

We got 6" of rain overnight. Some of my neighbors have a foot of standing water on their main levels. Which must mean their basements have even more.

According to the Feds we don't live in a flood zone even though we have numerous ponds and a creek that runs right through our hood and that has flooded in the past. So flood insurance is not available. Luckily my house is on a hill so we are dry. My neighbors though are shit out of luck.

According to the National Weather Service we got 4inches of rain in under an hour last night. That's a rainfall rate you'd see during a hurricane: http://chicagoweathercenter.com/blog/re ... re-to-come

And there's more cloudbursts on the way tonight.

Down in Hartford City, IN (about 150 miles SE of me) they got 10" of rain last night:

I tried to drive to campus to work out and I couldn't see more than 20 feet in front of my truck.

And then it started hailing.

Phoenix is getting clobbered with tropical rain. We received over 2" of rain in a couple of hours. I'm watching cars driving through flooded freeways. Some freeways are closed in sections. I-10 is a lake in places.

Sky Harbor has received 2 inches of rain all year. They received more than that in 2 hours.

Now 2.55 inches of rain at Sky Harbor, the fifth wettest day ever and it's only a little after 6 am. Plus the rain is expected to continue until noon and later today.

This is crazy and I have to drive to work now. I left myself an extra 20 minutes. At least the freeways I take aren't flooded.
