Wife and kids were both not on the flight.

Edit: There's reports that his children were on the helicopter with him, but nothing confirmed. Jesus Christ I hope that's not the case.

Hoping those kids were not on the flight but a local LA news channel is saying Kobe and his 4 daughters were on board. That is just devastating

Can't be completely true. Five confirmed killed including the pilot.

Maybe the baby was not on board?

A former student in LA sent me a message reading OMG and linked to the earliest if reports of crash. Student said he is hearing it was Kobe. Within Minutes TMZ was reporting Kobe had died. When reports of his daughters being on board surfaced, I reached out but hadn’t heard back. I’d hoped the remaining family was safe. The fact this was a father and daughter practicing basketball on a Sunday afternoon destroys me.

Ugh. He was one of the best ambassadors for the game and even the WNBA. Eyes are a bit misty right now and the world was robbed of what would have been one of the best HOF speeches ever given.

I can't believe they aren't cancelling these games today. Hater is right... all of these current players idolized him and dreamt of being the next Kobe.

Here is a video of the team Kobe coached. His daughter Gigi had skills. Watching the video, you can see how well Kobe coached them,

Not an nba or Kobe fan, but I acknowledge greatness when I see it, what he did for the game, and his being a dad hanging out with his daughter then this happened. Sucks, really really terrible. Pretty sad over this.

RIP Kobe and GiGi

I’m so sorry, J.

And I’m sorry to everyone.

I keep thinking about when he was a rookie. Such a kid among men. Del kept him bridled but he burst out and just overtook everyone.

Follow up tweet. A controlled flight into terrain(CFIT) is an accident in which an airworthy aircraft, under pilot control, is unintentionally flown into the ground, a mountain, a body of water or an obstacle. In a typical CFIT scenario, the crew is unaware of the impending disaster until it is too late.

Damn is right. They'd all still be alive now if just one person in the group insisted on driving.

It's the grief talking, maybe. But like with so many aviation accidents in bad weather, this could've been averted if people hadn't insisted on rushing things. Nobody HAS to be ANYwhere on a Sunday.

That said, Kobe will be remembered not for his mistakes but for his great spirit and generosity, qualities that both surpassed one or two errors in judgment, long since atoned for. RIP.

I am not aviation expert but I have to think dozens if not hundreds of small personal aircraft flew in those conditions and made it to their destination. I also have to think Bryant's helicopter has flown in conditions similar if not worse with how many years he has lived in Orange county.

I know this is completely speculative, but sounds like this pilot should have been flying using instruments and not visually.

Margin of error in bad weather at low altitude is razor thin. Hard to imagine a well-trained, experienced pilot not trusting instrumentation under no visual conditions, but it happens. Pilots have inverted their ships because they just know they're inverted even when they're not. The circling behavior likely indicates some panic disorientation, maybe followed by poor judgement as to real location within the surrounding terrain.
