Just listen to those crickets. A conspicuous hush is emanating from the NFL office on the subject of those soft footballs the New York Giants retrieved from the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Where was the outrage, the treating of ball-inflation and pounds-per-square-inch as more serious than a hijacking? Compare the screams of scandal NFL executives emitted toward Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to this smothered, pillow-over-the-face reaction.

It’s a guilty silence, and it leaves NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell beached and exposed. Goodell has always struggled with the demands of speech, but his wordlessness in this instance has nothing to do with competence but rather dishonesty. Any serious examination of those footballs from the Giants-Steelers game might well show that Goodell owes the Patriots and Brady an apology and material recompense. Which is exactly why the league is shutting the matter down and shutting it down now.

When the Giants tested air pressure on two footballs they captured against the Steelers and reported them to be below the permissible range of 12.5 PSI, league officials should have leaped into action. They should have told Steelers officials, “You’re in big f------ trouble” and then leaked erroneous amateur-hour data that poisoned the public understanding. They should have triggered a massive multimillion-dollar investigation, complete with footnoted junk science, that tarred a future Hall of Famer and resulted in fines, a forfeited draft pick and a four-game suspension. They should have invoked the words “scheme” and “tamper” and “cheating” and “competitive integrity,” even compared the offense to “performance-enhancing drugs.”

Pete Carrol runs a fake punt up three touchdowns late in the fourth and gets his punter destroyed. And Pete's all smiles and laughing it up as the medical team makes sure the punter is still breathing.

I guess that USC lack of class never goes away...

I get that him going limp was a scary moment, but knowing hes alright makes me laugh my ass off every time i see that damn clip. Only a punter would fumble the ball the air running in a straight line.

Feel bad for the Raiders. Not only are they starting their #3 QB they also lost their left tackle.

If the Texans lose this game O'Brien may be gone.

Thanks for the heads up ECC, I really don't follow the NFL during the season, so i didn't know that.

Tons of my patients are Raiders fans, and I know if teams does well, they'll be happy. one of my best friends (the most feminine sports loving girl you'll ever meet) is a diehard cowboys fan (born in Dallas, lives in Boston now), and I know she'll be elated if the Cowboys win.

Thats the where my interests lie this playoffs.

I thought that FG were much tougher to hit than they used to be. Didn't they modify the tee? The distances seem crazy at time. That 56 yard FG could have gone another 10 yards easy.

There is no tee. But they do now use a stiffer ball.

You may be thinking of extra points which were moved back to make them more difficult.

My issue with the Pats goes deep. I have a friend who works for the NFL who told me that the spy gate thing went so deep that Belicheck's cheating had to be swept under the rug to not shake the NFL to its core. This is a guy who works for the league, not some Alex Jones type.

I watched one NFL game this season, next year...zero.

Hey man this has been the worst sports year for me. First the Arizona baseball team choked away the college World Series, then my Cleveland Indians(I used to go the there spring training games as a child so they became my team then) choked away a 3-1 series lead against the Cubs and now my Atlanta Falcons choked away a super bowl. What can a guy do to get a god damn Championship Hat. This weekend was the worst sports weekend of my life!

I don't doubt the Pats have their dirty little secrets, but I think it is extremely naive to believe that they are much different than any other franchise. They are just a helluva lot better at what they do. (Same goes with any major successful BB or FB program that is wildly successful... that's right - ALL of them).

But if the organization that Roger Goodell runs says one of its constituents is dirty, then it must be true.

He hates anyone or anything that challenges the League's authority and grabs the spotlight. But he can laugh his way all the way to the bank because his $34M per trumps all of them.

This Belichick era Patriot franchise is the greatest sports Dynasty in NFL history, and Brady is the GoAT.

I am no Patriots fan, but you have to give mad props to what they have accomplished in this millenium with an ever-evolving roster.
