Almost as sad as feeling obligated to comment publicly about your annoyance of said player flipping to another program.

Sometimes I feel like Chi says things just to see Hater parrot them.

I love it when the UCLA fans try to justify their lame attendance on 'but we have so many options for sports,etc.'. Either you are a Pac12 fan or not, so you have basically USC or UCLA to attend in a city of how many millions vs a small Tucson of around a half million?

Not to mention the storied tradition of UCLA....there is no valid excuse IMHO for the other flagship of the Pac12 to have such a pathetic attendance record. CSM alluding to this, in a polite way, is just a way of complimenting the loyal UA fanbase.

BTFD.

LOL that's just a Los Angeles thing. Remember when Pete Carrol first took over at USC and the Coliseum was half empty most games? They were in the 40s and 50s for most of nearly two seasons, a lot of it consisting of games when Leinhart and Bush and co. were actually winning games, until they became the fad in LA. Rams and Raiders had attendance problems and bounced. Dodgers average attendance will vary 10,000 fans or more a game per season, depending on how they are doing and 35,000 fans is really only 18,000 fans from innings 1-2 and 8-9. I'm not sure of current ticket prices, but I remember my dad giving a scalper a $20 bill for two tickets, pretty damn good seats too, to a Raiders game in the early 90s. In the same era, a dad and his son could sit in the pavilion and watch the Dodgers for under $10 at the gate.

Basically, you have the second biggest market in the country that will sell the shit out of games if a team is premier or they are the "it" team in town at the time, but be way short if they aren't premier.

Actually they do. second hand market prices for Arizona basketball games are way higher than they were five to eight years ago when we were transitioning and had our interim coaches. You could get upper deck tickets to crappy non-conference games for less than $20 7 years ago. now the cheapest you can get are $40 to $50 for games against Bradley and northwestern state.

more in the link but...
But at that point, Alford decided to take a detour by responding indirectly to Sean Miller's question:

"Today somebody was asking me...why come to UCLA? ... When you're in the second largest market in the country, and you're in an academic institution that is top-10 in the world, the most applied to university in the world, those are special things. Then you add our tradition here of 112 national titles--most in the country--11 in basketball--most in basketball. You almost have to find a reason why not to come here. It's a culture of excellence..."

But Alford wasn't finished with his recruiting pitch. Although Alford has been at UCLA for over two years now, he apparently wants to be sure that everyone knows that he's not Ben Howland (emphasis added):

"Now that we've been here two years, I think now these young players are seeing how we let them play. We don't handcuff them, we don't micromanage, we give them the freedom to play through the teaching and fundamentals of what we're trying to do."

As the author pointed out, that seems to be a shot at Howland. Which is weird since, you know . . . three Final Fours versus . . . how many for Alford?

UCLA is tied with Carnegie Mellon and USC at #23 in the country according to the US News university rankings 2015-16.

But yea as far as major college basketball is concerned I'd still rather have McKale for recruiting purposes!

Reading a debate on the attendance issue the conference faces, I came upon this nugget...
Sean Miller is right. One of the appeals of college sports and hoops in general is the atmosphere, the intensity, the fun. When you go to a UCLA game, for instance, and the place isn’t even half full and the student section is spending more time making balloon animals than cheering for the game, and when the rest of the fans don’t bother to get on their feet between tip-off and leave-early-to-beat-traffic time… that does not make for a great atmosphere. That type of thing can quickly devolve into a negative feedback loop. And all other things being equal, in the hyper-competitive environment of high-level recruiting, a sleepy in-arena atmosphere could make a difference. Alford has had no problems bringing in good recruiting classes thus far, but maybe the lack of buzz around that program has led a recruit or two to another campus.

UCLA is a top school, and even moreso if you look at solely public universities. Hate on their athletics all you want, but educationally speaking they are top notch.

Or in other words, don't be such a fucking stupid asshole.

I flipped between the uCla game (traffic) and the Furd game last night. It's debatable which was more pathetic.

I don't get it really. They can rag on Tucson all they want...but I don't know a UA grad that doesn't hold it in a special place in their heart...and being apart of an experience at McKale adds to that.

I distinctly remember making the trip to Pauley in the mid 90's when both programs were rocking. It was great, like a real rivalry. All the games were attended by my buddy who went there. I don't know how traffic for the students and everyone else became so much worse over the course of a few decades.

Maybe we've got this whole traffic thing backward. Could it be that UCLA fans, being environmentally and socially conscious don't want to produce MORE traffic congestion and pollution and that's why they stay away from the games? Maybe their fandom is so strong, they're collective driving to Pauley would put so much carbon into the air that global warming would actually start accelerating even faster, and therefore, for the good of LA, California, the United States of America, the Earth, and all mankind, they stay away from Pauley in droves and do everyone who yearns to breath free a total solid.

Thank you Bruins Nation for thinking of others over yourselves....
