UCLA will need to come up with $10.4 million to fire him.
They would probably owe him about $1.5M per year left on the contract. That is under the assumption that Steve could get another college basketball coaching job that paid him about $1M a year. So if they fired him after year three (leaving I believe 4 years on the contract), you'd be looking at around $6M. One would assume that combined with the disastrous PR in the hiring of Steve would be enough to cost Guerrero his job which, of course, is why Guerrero wouldn't fire Steve.

Not sure it's possible with that contract. I mean sure, his seat can get hot with the fans, but if his seat isn't hot with Guerrero (and one would assume if Guerrero had to fire Steve after three years he would lose his position, although that has been thought to be the case before and it didn't happen) then it would just be the perception that it's hot but not the reality.

Or perhaps he's start winning tons of games. Who knows.

Hes fired two two basketball and football coaches already. Im pretty sure hes made of Teflon at this point

In 2013-14, his first season as UCLA’s head coach, Alford led the Bruins to a 28-9 record while guiding UCLA to its first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance and first Pac-12 Tournament title since 2008. The Bruins, who also registered their highest single-season win total since 2007-08,
I'd understand the extension if the season had just ended... but why now? Why not make him earn it by winning the conference or having an amazing tournament run? Is a second place finish and a sweet 16 appearance all it takes to get another year? Or does winning the conference tournament matter that much?

But the football team is undefeated. I guess as long as they're playing well, Dan Guerrero can do whatever he wants with the other sports.

Football team no longer undefeated....but anyway -

I thought I remember the big problem most UCLA fans had with the Alford hire was the length/buyout of the original deal? And now one year later they're extending it? One year?

I don't follow these things but how in the hell does that make any sense? At all?

It's pretty difficult to understand why UCLA at this exact point needed to extend Alford's contract from ending in 2020 to ending in 2021. Bad incentive structures might've had something to do with it.

Guerrero can't say "Well, hiring a rape apologist from the Indiana 'We hate UCLA' tree was a mistake so we're getting rid of him." --->Guerrero fired

So why not just double down on it, give him an extension and say "Steve's a great hire...and I'm a genius for hiring him." ----->Even if Guerrero is wrong, he won't be around for 2020 so no cost to him to extend and be wrong. Instead he extends for one year to get the "extension press conference" where he says Steve was a great hire, thus pushing kudos to himself (in the short term) by logical extension.

Alford at UCLA relegates that program to second tier status for the near and distant future. He's no better than the 5th best coach in his own league. Can't imagine that sets well with UCLA fans.

I know personally that majority of the uCla fan base is uninspired by their head coach...

With that said, I believe that this extension could not have happened at any other time. I don't see them having a better year this than last.

UCLA has a very difficult schedule, and a young, unproven team. I expect them to look very "bubbly" by March.

You can tell he's mad. Look, man, it's not my fault Alford is reeling in the lesser recruits by the dozen. It should tell you something that not a single media outlet considered this commitment newsworthy.

Pulling Ingram from NC would be quite a coup. Could go well with Zimmerman, Bragg, and Brown.

Added to Ali and Holiday.

Not sure we land all four of those in the first line. Thinking two for sure, probably three.

Bug, if you were your betting man, who are the first two, and maybe three?

The smoke is Zim and Brown. Is there fire?

That would be great, Arizona needs someone better to practice against before the tourney.

Odds?

Bragg - 80%
Brown - 50/50 with UK
Ingram - 75%
Zimmerman? No idea. Mom is all over the place. I think she wants the Josiah Turner treatment during his recruitment

A terrible season with nobody eligible could derail all of this, but UCLA is using ADIDAS pretty effectively right now.

And watch UCLA land none and the board is subjugated to an endless choruses of Heh

Probably means Alford doesn't understand the purpose of a scrimmage, probably treated it like a real game, lol. You're supposed to work on weak areas, put your players in tough situations, let the other team run on you, etc. Winning by 40 is actually losing by 40 in a secret scrimmage.

That's a lot of insight into a game in which nobody knows what actually happened. I would guess PG play and chemistry are the two biggest things that need work on, along with defense.
