Always pull for PAC teams and will especially this year because of the defections leaving the conference.

In my bracket I have Bobby Hurley going to the Final Four of the biggest whiny turd tournament. He might just win it all.

Well if picked that then you might as well have Hurley beating Duke for the Championship.

Lot of competition out there but Hurley has the entitlement and resting “I demand to speak to a manager!!!” face to bring home the trophy.

ASU well on their way to advancing, up huge on Nevada. I think ASU can make a run based on the other teams in their region. Always liked Bobby Hurley. Kind of hard to swallow he has more championships and as many FF's in his college days at Duke than Arizona has in it's entire history.

He has taken them to the tournament 3 times in the last 5 years. Best run since the Ned Wulk days. They are nuts if they get rid of Hurley

Hurley is literally the perfect coach for them and us. He gets them to the tournament consistently, but they're never good enough to make a serious run. He's also so damn easy for us to hate and make fun of. And as we saw this year they occasionally upset us. Win win for all.

Hurley is no better than Sendek. Remember, Sendek had a couple of NIT 1 seeded teams back when there were only 65 teams in a tournament. Had there been a First Four with 68 teams, Sendek would've made the tournament at a similar rate as Hurley.

But it's no matter. It's not like Sendek, even with the Beard, could get out of the first weekend of the big dance. In fact, they haven't been to a Sweet 16 since 1995. Tonight's loss ensures this streak will continue.

Frieder/Sendek/Hurley is as good as they can do. And even Wulk could never beat Billy McGill, Mel Daniels, Kresimir Cosic, or Bob Elliott for that matter, on their peak teams. He won in down WAC years when he had generational talent like Caldwell and Hollins, and even then face-planted in the Elite Eight; their last time in the 70s. The others couldn't even do that well, despite Smith, Harden, and Martin. So have the guy who hired Natasha Adair (1-17/3-11) fire Hurley and bring in somebody else. I'm sure the great ones are lining up for that job.

Can't state ASU's basketball reality much better than this - we're ALL in agreement.

Watching ASU's close loss Vs TCU last night, my thought was - good for ASU, but this is about the best ASU can hope for. First Round, maybe in position to win late, which is exactly how Herb Sendek's last tournament hurrah went, barely losing to Texas in the 2014 First Round.

Having half-heartedly followed ASU basketball since Herb's initial years, ASU can't start winning a lot without their coach getting pillaged, or more likely, their coach leveraging their success to flee elsewhere. We all know Herb and Hurley would take the first ACC ticket out of Tempe. So ASU is paralyzed into college basketball's toiling lower-middle class where a coach that achieves 3 to 4 tournaments a decade isn't worth firing but also never good enough for Georgia Tech to call their agent.

Turns out I'm giving ASU basketball too much credit - tournaments by decade:

60s: FOUR - '61, '62, '63, '64
70s: TWO - '73, '75
80s: TWO - '80, '81
90s: TWO - '91, '95
00s: TWO - '03, '09
10s: TWO - '14, '18*, '19 (*First 4 only)
20s: ONE - '23

Since the 1970, ASU basketball only averages TWO tournaments a decade. One every five seasons. Meaning an ASU basketball signee is likely to only play in one tournament, and lose right away.

Something Kentucky can almost appreciate:

ASU Announcer Desperate For Relevancy

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

Where to begin? We lost a first round game (to what turns out to be a relatively decent and underseeded Sweet Sixteen team), and it's Viagra to ASU cockroaches. So they have a former mediocre little guard from suburban OC who couldn't get a better offer. Grab, push, shove, hide behind a bigger player and call it good defense. He lost to Arizona 8 times in his pathetic career, including home court (50/50 crowd) losses of 30, 27, and 20 points. "Calling Dr. Freud...Calling Dr. Freud..." Then he became their radio "analyst." As a former radio person myself, I can comfortably say radio's a dying medium. Stream video content or whatever you want, but getting scratchy Radio Free Europe on a crystal set ain't where it's at anymore. And, despite a zillion low-ratings special interest stations, the decline in quality from a peak in the 1970s is dramatic. I'd mention a very hum-drum day job, but no need to bother swinging that low. So the big comeback after having ASU's miracle shot proven a fluke by the drubbing in Vegas? "Arizona isn't at the very top of the blue-bloods right now." Wow, good one. Really? No shit. And the guy at the Republic who looks like Mike Tyson's sparring partner eagerly picks it up as "calling out Arizona fans." (As to newspapers as a viable medium, see the previous comments about radio.) That's it; nice try...epic fail. Over and out.

Wonder if he is any good being JC? From the highlights it looks like they are playing AAU level defense against him. Won't get looks like that in D1.

Although UA has picked up some decent JC players. Keanu Pinder and Kadeem Allen come to mind, both played Hutchinson CC in Kansas. Allen was JUCO POY.

And old timers will remember Tom Tolbert, who played at Cerritos CC before the UA, although he started at UCI. Ended up with a 7 year NBA career, which is longer than most NBA players.

People can make fun of ASU all they want but losing to Princeton in the first round doesn't exactly substantiate it. Neither does over twenty years without a Final Four and almost ten years of not getting beyond the Sweet 16. Arizona is historically one of the most underachieving programs in college basketball. So much talent, so many appearances in the NCAA tournament yet so little to show for it. It just proves money can't buy you everything. Now that's worth making fun of and the rest of the college basketball world does outside of Tucson. That I can assure you.

The whole angle is straight out of ASU's playbook. Deny that Arizona's a college basketball blueblood because you can't hang. The easily provable reality is that the national media confirm our status frequenty, even to a surprising extent to this alum and long-time fan. Jealousy is okay, particularly if it drives you to suceed; envy is not, because it's the desire to deny others things you think you can't achieve. There are about 30 things in college basketball Arizona has that ASU can't do anything about. There's the crowd support (which translates to recruiting.) Obviously there's the title, the other title game, and the other couple of FFs. 11 Elite Eights, most recently in 2015, while their 3rd and last was about 50 years ago. And 17 major conference titles, compared to a big fat goose egg. On the women's side, Adia did it to CTT, and now it's her Foghorn Leghorn 2 x 4 to the rear end of Natasha Adair's Barnyard Dawg (that's the cartoon dog's name) for the forseeable future. And it says here we'll be back in the football bowl business by December, while uno-who will not.

Duke Brennan's transfer is surprising. He was developing and getting more minutes and time in the rotation as ASU's season went along. He was set up for a lot more playing time going into next season. Not sure he started all that much but he played in the most games by a Sun Devil freshman dating back to 2008-09. Looks like Brennan got the early playing time he was looking for before now taking his experience to a better program.
