The more and more I think about NCAA and college athletics, there really needs to be a major overhaul.

Boosters can pay these multi million dollar coach buyouts. But how dare the booster buy a player a 19.99 Sizzler steak dinner! That requires punishment!! the program is on probation and the athlete is ineligible for the rest of the year.

That’s a disaster.

They haven’t been good since Randy Edsall was their coach.

The only program who handles coaching searches worse than UCLA basketball, might be USC football. They havent made a great hire since Larry Smith. Did luck into some Peter Carroll magic.

So now, one rumor is that they'll go after Mario Cristobal at Oregon. That would be similar to the Smith move in that they'd get a two-fer in terms of screwing a thorn-in-their-side league opponent while getting their man. The only difference is Uncle Phil can presumably match whatever USC offers with one check. Seems like it would be more a case of Cristobal wanting to get out of the cold and rain and having a better chance to win big on an annual basis. That's if he's not particularly loyal, doesn't mind making enemies for life at Oregon, and doesn't think Oregon can do as well as USC, now and in the future. A lot of people discount USC as being in a dystopian world out of Blade Runner that nobody in their right mind would want. But, if you can provide your wife and kids with the kind of house Kings MVP Anze Kopitar has in Manhattan Beach to run around in, maybe with a limo to take you to and from work, that lifestyle can be hard to turn down regardless of the USC job pressures.

It's no way similar to the Smith move. Arizona to USC was clearly an upgrade.

Oregon to USC feels like a lateral move if you honestly look at where the two programs stand over the last 10 years.

IMNSHO, ANY head coaching move between team in conference is shameful, and an insult to the team left. If you aren’t intending to eventually beat the higher up teams, then don’t take the job in the first place.

I deeply resented Larry Smith taking that job, and ANY Arizona fan who had ever held on to the dream of a Rose Bowl someday should have also.

Had he taken a so-called “upgrade” job with any team outside of the Pac, I’d have (sadly) wished him well!

I felt the same way PC and I was there when Smith was hired. My mother was so pissed she wrote a letter to the LA Times titled “Traitor”. I am convinced he would have taken us to the Rose Bowl.

Having said that, whether you like it or not it was a coaching upgrade move.

Same about Smith. I was really mad at him for decades, but was glad he came back to Tucson to help the team out after he retired.

It was more about Smith lying to the Tucson press, and not telling his players that made it worse. We used to call him Ol' Redeye. Not for his drinking, but for taking the redeye out of Tucson to not see anyone.

I acknowledge that it was an “upgrade”, of course. My point is that it was selfish, disloyal, and classless...

All of which were contrary to the character I had previously believed the man to have.

That's it in a nutshell. USC was at fault for the way they handled it, but Smith was at fault for accepting those terms because he wanted the job. They snuck around (which is not particularly uncommon in a coaching search), but the situation was common knowledge for weeks while we were prepping for the Aloha Bowl, and Smith came out and lied and said there was no truth to it. Then, he was gone right after the bowl, but to my knowledge never had a goodbye meeting with the players he'd recruited and coached. I also didn't appreciate the fiction he told his players to motivate them for the first game at Arizona after the coaching change. Somebody in Tucson took the song "Don't Worry; Be Happy" and changed it to "Get Even; Beat Larry." Well, yeah...we badly wanted to win games against USC after that, and we eventually did. But he evidently told them we'd be cheap-shotting them all game, and when an SC player went out of bounds on our sideline, their whole team would run to the "rescue", with attendant pushing, shoving, and mouthing off at our sideline players. Very classy, especially when you're loaded with Junior Seau, etc. Our wins against SC after that were very satisfying, and no doubt contributed to his demise there, where the LA media thought he was a hick and had too many Rudys on the team. He got his career-defining win over his mentor Schembechler in the Rose Bowl, but that was about it. FIred at USC, and eventually at Missouri before hanging it up. Schadenfreude

That makes too much sense.

They won’t hire a guy from back east. Has to have some sort of SC connection.

Good for the rest of the conference.

So apparently Coach O’s issue that led to his dismissal was that ever since his divorce he’s been trying to bang anyone with a vagina and a pulse, including hitting on the pregnant wife of an LSU bigwig and letting the little kids of his girlfriends interrupt practice and participate in drills.

Not close. If Coach O was winning he could be banging them on the sideline and the kids could be QB. It is LSU after all. Thought it was a classy presser after he got fired but I guess it was sweetened by the millions he got for no criticism.

Senior has to be in his late 80’s/early 90’s.
