Re: Fuck asu
Not sure scholarship reductions are that big of deal in football. 85 scholarship players per FBS school plus 15 of so walk-ons.
NFL teams carry 53 players.
Not like MBB losing scholarships since they only have 14 scholarship players.
Not like ASU is going to make a bowl game soon

Re: Fuck asu
NFL teams also have a 16-man practice squad. So in any given year, NFL teams are likely to suit up 65 or so players, since injuries are assured to happen. With a college football team, you probably need similar numbers, and you are going to carry a number of players who just aren't ready to contribute; so they redshirt. Reduce the scholarship numbers, and instead of a RS sophomore getting action late in the season due to injuries, it could be a true frosh, with a bright future, but not yet ready for primetime.
I also agree that ASu timed their self-imposed bowl ban well.

Too soonTheCatInTheHat wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 10:20 amSo in the end it turns out to have been relatively well-played. Don't know if the option was available then, but kind of like if we had self-imposed a bowl ban when we knew we'd be bad in 1980 after the Mason stuff, and then the Tunnicliffe/Johnson/Hunley team in 83 could have gone to a bowl.AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 8:23 am ASu is expected to agree with the NCAA findings regarding the recruiting violations that occurred during COVID. https://www.cbssports.com/college-footb ... iolations/
Not sure what this means for future penalties, but unlikely any further bowl ban, as technically, ASu was ineligible this year. May be a fine and some possible scholarship reductions? Scholarship reductions make it difficult to rebuild, as it effects depth.

Does a reduction in scholarships matter at all? With NIL can't a player just easily pay his own tuition?AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 12:06 pm NFL teams also have a 16-man practice squad. Once Tennessee's investigation wrapped up with toothless penalties from the NCAA, I knew ASU wouldn't be in for much of a punishment. To quote the CBS Sports article: "Tennessee recently faced similar NCAA violations. The Volunteers' case ended last summer with the program being put on probation, suffering recruiting sanctions and paying an $8 million fine. Despite admitted widespread Level I violations, Tennessee did not receive a postseason ban."AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 8:23 am ASu is expected to agree with the NCAA findings regarding the recruiting violations that occurred during COVID. https://www.cbssports.com/college-footb ... iolations/

From the release: "The agreed-upon penalties in this case include four years of probation for the school, a fine, a self-imposed postseason ban for the 2023 football season, vacation of records for contests in which ineligible student-athletes competed, scholarship reductions and recruiting restrictions in alignment with the Level I-mitigated classification for the school. Additionally, the school disassociated an involved booster for a period of five years. The individuals also agreed to or did not contest show-cause orders ranging from three to 10 years consistent with the Level I-aggravated classifications of their respective violations."

To breakdown the NCAA quote posted by Karpman: "The agreed-upon penalties in this case include:
[1] four years of probation for the school
[2] a fine
[3] a self-imposed postseason ban for the 2023 football season
[4] vacation of records for contests in which ineligible student-athletes competed
[5] scholarship reductions and...
[6] recruiting restrictions in alignment with the Level I-mitigated classification for the school. Additionally...
[7] the school disassociated an involved booster for a period of five years..."
ESPN reporting:"The NCAA did not provide further details about any of those punishments."
Most interested in learning: 1) how many scholarships will this cost ASU? 2) What will be the recruiting restrictions? 3) Who is the involved booster?

https://www.cbssports.com/college-footb ... iolations/Former Arizona State coach Herm Edwards receives five-year show-cause penalty for NCAA recruiting violations
The five-year show-cause is one of the longest show-cause penalties for a head football coach in NCAA history
Arizona State coach Herm Edwards received a five-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA for recruiting violations involving more than 30 prospects during the COVID-19 no-visit period, 247Sports reports. The punishment against Edwards, which started on April 15, is one of the longest show-cause penalties handed down to a coach in NCAA history.
According to 247Sports, Edwards, 69, was one of seven former ASU staffers (Prentice Gill, Derek Hagan, Chris Hawkins, Zak Hill and Robert Rodriguez, and equipment employee Eric Bowman being the others) to receive show-cause penalties ranging between three to 10 years by the NCAA.
Arizona State self-imposed a postseason ban for the 2023 season and will vacate nine of its 10 wins between 2021-22 for the use of one or more ineligible players.
The school also agreed to disassociate for five years with Regina Jackson, the mother of former ASU quarterback and LSU Heisman winner Jayden Daniels. Jackson was alleged to have paid for flights and lodging for ASU recruits who impermissibly visited during the COVID dead period.

ASSU currently has the number 1 recruiting class in the Big 12. I just don't get it. A disgusting sinking ship of a school with a tradition of cheating and they're currently number 1?
Meanwhile we've got a bunch of SJS players and a couple from a lower level of competition? I appreciatevthe guys coming here but I hope this staff is up to the type of recruiting and NIL fundraising needed at this level.

All Their Mystique Is Gone
I've gotta say, when I started at Arizona (early 70s), ASU had won so many games against the WIldcats in recent years that there was an intimidation factor they benefitted from. Our fans didn't have much reason to put up with abuse in Tempe when a loss seemed likely, so they always had an overwhelmingly ASU crowd, and I think our teams probably choked a few times when they could have won due to the circumstances. Obviously Larry Smith and Lute Olson and the coaches who followed them generally put that all to bed. But when you've got an Arizona baseball player casually eating a banana and having caps piled on top of his head in a dugout interview during an ASU game on TV and feeling pretty much completely relaxed about winning there, it has to be mortifying to ASU fans who remembered the way things were in the 70s. They can wear their "No Pity" t-shirts and celebrate a one-off football blowout when we hired the wrong coach, but it's empty rhetoric in the greater scheme of things. As we enter the Big XII, they are clearly the tag-along younger brother who's lucky to be invited along.
Re: Fuck asu
That might be an excuse for why ASU has over a dozen commits but it’s NOT an excuse for why Arizona has only one.UAEebs86 wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 4:43 pmIt's called playing time. And even if playing time is what Dillingham is selling, nearly all of those recruits are your typical three stars that will need a full season of development before they have a chance to see the FBS level. Dillingham is throwing everything he has into program building and securing pledges from prospects that Arizona could use long term, from regions where Arizona should be hopefully pulling kids – Arizona, California, Texas.
Meanwhile, it’s deliberately difficult to tell what’s going on with Arizona’s staff:

I have to agree with you on this. I've been hesitant to say anything because the entire staff had been so warmly welcomed and I didn't want to get gutted because I had negative thoughts. We have no idea what's going on with recruiting. We've wound up with transfers that I don't remember any announcements. We occasionally see where someone was offered but then then nothing. Occasionally we hear about an official visit. Elija Badger supposedly visited and then not a word on the visit. Did he even show up? Coach Brennan has a big smile and likes to hug everyone but I'd like to see him and his staff recruiting. The people he has brought in look pretty mediocre.

Don't the recruits announce the commitments themselves? Coaching staffs cannot comment on recruits until the NLI is signed.
Even Fisch only tweeted hints and such, never a recruit's name.

That may be true, I really don't know. Once they announce we would usually see a picture of them in an Arizona uniform with UofA all over it and it said "committed. We've seen a few of those but not everyone.

That this seems like it was in the works for a while in no way reduces the number of questions around it - Graham Rossini is finalized as Arizona State's new Athletic Director. A guy who served as ASU's Senior Associate Athletics Director since 2021. For all the headaches with Ray Anderson why would ASU promote from within and give the reigns to a guy who at the very least was aware if not influential behind the lingering problems going on with ASU athletics? Seems like a lazy hire by Crow. The article below talks about Crow hiring Rossini because he wanted a "new approach" to athletics. Yes, so again, why hire from within?

Missed this story last week: ASU football coach Kenny Dillingham slammed for 'cruel' College Football 25 prank - from AZ Central:
"Did Arizona State football coach Kenny Dillingham go too far with a recent video game prank involving his players? For the prank, Dillingham, entering his second season as ASU football coach, said he had copies of the new 'College Football 25' video game, which he'd give to the players that planked the longest. The players were amped up for the opportunity to have the game, which doesn't come out until next month, early. But after winning the competition, the "winners" discovered that it was only a case for the video game, with the DVD of Disney's A Goofy Movie inside."
