He worked for Oregon Football during their loss to ASU in 2019. He took a job with ASU 2 weeks after the game.

There are accusations that he gave ASU coaches the Oregon game plan and acted as a secret agent inside Oregon for ASU. Wow! This just gets better and better.

So why is this now coming out? Fodder to go along with yesterday's news?

I attended Oregon's loss to ASU in 2019; lots of Duck fans in attendance. It still stands out as such a strange game because Oregon was on a roll, blowing out pretty much everybody before and after, save for - BOOM! - this unexplainable egg laid in Tempe.

The fact that ESPN pundits haven’t called for Herm’s immediate firing like they did with Sean Miller shows just where their biases lie.

It also shows they are a bunch of fucking asshole hypocrites.

The media needs to keep the pressure on them. ESPN won’t, and I doubt local entities will for any more than a few more days, but I’m hopeful Yahoo and The Athletic and SI keep talking about it and pressing Herm and Anderson to answer questions.

And the other key thing is if the snitches talk to the NCAA right away then everything gets accelerated as opposed to the normal long, drawn out process of finding out what will happen because nobody wants to talk.

They can say today it doesn't impact Herm or the program but if they get clear, irrefutable evidence immediately it will be hammer time on ole' Herm and his "company".

Please god, give me a WS championship and heavy sanctions on ASSU football.

I was always skeptical of Herm’s pious integrity, mainly because he was always talking about it.

In my experience, those who are truly moral don’t shout about it from the rooftops. They just quietly go about their lives.

I don't even know what to say about that. There are few larger advocates of the anti-racism movement than I. I understand the inequities, systemic issues, and dog whistles. I hate to speak in generalities but anytime I see some anti-BLM social post or some complete misunderstanding of racism in this country it is usually from someone who went to ASU. I grew up in the Confederate South and Phoenix is hands down one of the most racist places I have ever seen. And last year after the Floyd death most major programs put out some sort of message. ASU Football is the only one that put out a tone death copaganda video.

While I do think what happened to Book & the other assistants had shades of racism to it. This was just blatant cheating right out in the open to see. If anything I've heard a lot of those in the Black Community say they feel very let down by Herm Edwards because he was supposed to be a high character leader of their Community.

Notice the excuses from Tempe already lining up?

The POC excuse...?

And the excuse that the NCAA is going use ASU to flex their muscles and make a point about enforcement since ASU is not a cash cow like USC where, according to Tempe, this stuff goes on more aggressively?

It will be interesting to watch how the asu administration (not the athletic dept.) deals with this.

My question is: Is the asu administration going to do a COVID trace study of everyone associated with the football coaching staff???

If even one member of the athletic dept. (or their relatives) died as a result of exposure to a recruit infected with COVID then that (IMO) is tantamount to murder. That would make the asu violations the worst in NCAA history.

Its one thing to line a recruits pockets with money, provide hookers to visiting recruits, or buy some blue chipper a new car.

Its quite another thing to be complicit in killing someone.

Pac-12 stock report: Alleged recruiting violations by ASU during COVID are both deplorable and unsurprising
The Sun Devils have taken a hyper-aggressive approach to recruiting
By JON WILNER | jwilner@bayareanewsgroup.com | Bay Area News Group
PUBLISHED: June 17, 2021 at 8:08 a.m. | UPDATED: June 17, 2021 at 8:40 a.m.
Commentary on Pac-12 developments on and off the field …

Falling: Arizona State football

We’ll start by saying that we don’t know if Arizona State actually violated NCAA rules by hosting recruits during what was supposed to be a COVID-related recruiting dead period.

And we’ll also acknowledge that guessing how the NCAA might rule is almost as fraught as guessing when the NCAA might rule.

But we know the NCAA has what Yahoo described as a “dossier” of material implicating the Sun Devils that includes screenshots and receipts.

We know that former ASU football staffers are willing to provide evidence to the NCAA.

We know that ASU’s hyper-aggressive recruiting tactics — again, they aren’t violations, yet — were one of the worst-kept secrets in the Pac-12. (It took a disgruntled former employee to send material to the NCAA in order for those tactics to come to light.)

We know that whenever a program suddenly has next-level success attracting prospects from areas outside its traditional recruiting base, it’s extremely suspicious.

And we know at least some of the allegations against ASU involve “illicit on-campus recruiting trips” during the worst pandemic in 100 years.

That’s the real issue here, folks: ASU wasn’t merely trying to get ahead with alleged shenanigans that we often see from dirty programs.

If the allegations are true, the Sun Devils were flouting the COVID protocols adopted by the NCAA and the Pac-12.

If true, it’s not just run-of-the-mill cheating. It’s deplorable cheating, to the point that the Sun Devils would have to consider a full housecleaning at the top levels of the football program and the athletic department. (If athletic director Ray Anderson didn’t know what was going on, he should have.)

According to Yahoo: “Sources said members of the football program deliberately, blatantly and consistently broke rules related to hosting players during the dead period, including coach Herm Edwards meeting with recruits.”

So appalling are the allegations that Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick and Stanford coach David Shaw were willing to speak on the record about the situation. And you never, ever see on-the-record quotes from coaches or administrators about another school’s NCAA issues.

And if true, then an unseemly picture begins to emerge: Arizona State was the only football program in the conference that shut down for three weeks last season because of COVID.

Other schools were shuttered for two weeks, which made sense given the duration of the quarantine and isolation protocols implemented following positive tests.

But only ASU was down and out for three games, which, as the Hotline noted last fall, didn’t make much sense:

“How were the Sun Devils healthy enough to field a full team in the opener at USC and then, a few days later, suffer an outbreak so severe that it knocked them out for three games (and counting)?

“How could the virus have spread through the program over the course of multiple days when players were (presumably) tested the night before the game and then again (presumably) when they reconvened as a team the following Monday?

“The unusual duration of ASU’s shutdown … suggests something went very wrong.”

Indeed, it appears something is very wrong in Tempe.

Many key details are missing at this point, but one thing is clear: The optics are absolutely abysmal.

Rising: Arizona fans

After years of insults hurled from their arch-rivals, the Arizona faithful now can sit back and watch ASU twist in the winds of NCAA scandal.

The rest of us are left wondering which situation will be resolved first.

Our money is on ASU, because the “dossier” of evidence should speed up the process and because the Arizona basketball case has been turned over to the newly-formed Independent Accountability Resolution Process.

Clearly, NCAA investigators could have saved on lodging expenses if they had just rented an Airbnb in Casa Grande.

Falling: New Leadership Models

Remember back in the late fall of 2017, when Edwards was hired and the Sun Devils issued a press release describing a “new leadership model” for the football program that read like it was written by a management professor?

Right about now, we could take this opportunity to mock Arizona State for that highfalutin approach, which doesn’t seem to have generated the desired results.

Instead, we will simply say this: College football isn’t about fancy management terms or corporate org charts or NFL front office models or head coaches who serve as CEOs.

It’s about people, it’s about the grind, and it’s about respect for the process — not reinventing it.

Falling: Pac-12 image (hypothetically)

Work with me here …

It’s December 3, and Arizona State, which is loaded with returnees on both sides of the line of scrimmage, takes the field at Allegiant Stadium as the South division winner — a mere four quarters from the Pac-12 title.

Over the intervening months, information has surfaced that not only substantiates the current allegations but connects ASU to additional violations over the previous 18-24 months.

In short, the program has been a cesspool of recruiting transgressions.

But because NCAA justice unfolds at the same speed mountains rise, the investigation remains ongoing and the Sun Devils, technically, are not yet guilty of anything as they take the field for the Pac-12’s showcase event.

Talk about Sin City.

I find it interesting that based on my perusal of social media, assu fans are still in denial, and think, after reading this, that Jayden Daniel’s mom’s credit card and email really were hacked (by who? Who does it benefit to use her credit card to buy a plane ticket for a recruit? That’s pretty specific hacking) while simultaneously still believing that Sean Miller paid Deandre Ayton out of his own pocket.

That fine assu education clearly doesn’t include teaching logic.

I don't agree with this. Look at former UA women's basketball coach Niya Butts. She was given 8 long years at Arizona and had just one winning season. After a 5-25 campaign (a third straight losing season) she was given two more years to right ship which resulted in two more losing seasons of 10-20 & 13-19. Seven losing seasons in eight attempts, for a woman of color at a major university.

Ty Willingham went 2-9, 5-7, 4-9 and then 0-12 at UW. That's incredibly bad for a program that has so many recruiting advantages.

Edwards & ASU has tremendous recruiting leverage - ESPN experience (as does Antonio Pierce), NFL connections... a lot credentials. They don't even need to cheat to be successful. In fact, if you're above board and follow the rules, good players and their families will see that they can trust you as a head coach and that's someone you want to play for. What does it say about a coach who is blatantly cheating on your recruiting trip?

All you’ve proven here is that you know of two coaches who were given a lot of chances to succeed.

Now come up with just as many examples of coaches of color getting the same number of opportunities to fail as White coaches and you might have a point.
