Can someone explain the rules to me regarding what happened in the UCLA Vs. South Alabama game.

With about 10:30 remaining in the 2nd Quarter UCLA fumbled on the 2 yard line. South Alabama recovered at the spot of the fumble and when South Alabama was given the ball they got to take it out to the 30 like a touchback.

I don’t think I missed anything and am 99.9% certain the ball was recovered at the 2 or so yard line and not in the endzone.

While this has been dissected many ways from the hatred of Chip Kelly and a few other things, I have to wonder how mad the long time fans are on moving out of the conference. The few I know are really upset and don’t want to support the program right now

Without anybody making any assumptions or drawing any conclusions, I find this sequence of events interesting and amusing. First, Kliavkoff talked about how USC "has" to be in the football national championship picture annually for the welfare of the Pac-12. Well, I get the media rights trickle-down financial theory, but I don't appreciate the league on-field competitive impact of openly rooting for one team like that. I believe he also said something similar regarding UCLA basketball. Next came Brexit for the LA schools, and the dialogue switched to how officiating wouldn't be biased against them in their last two years. Then, all the whining about officiating when USC lost at Utah. Yeah, it was bad...so was the officiating in our game...and so is officiating in the Pac-12 damned near always. It just doesn't get an appropriate level of scrutiny until something uber high profile like this happens. I'm looking forward to UCLA losing their first conference road game in basketball this coming season. Last year's Bill Plaschke crap about Tyger Campell suffering taunts about his hair at McKale when the real story is he got booed the rest of the game after leg-whipping Pelle Larsson in front of the Zona Zoo will seem like small potatoes. In a few years, they can complain that "midwestern officials have it in for the LA teams." Boo-fucking-hoo.

The real shame in UCLA and USC switching to the Big Ten is losing Jerry Neuheisel (receivers coach).

Nobody is doing more to revive the flawless reconstruction of Hollywood's 1980s flick bully:

The B1G is already poaching the best of the conference officials. How biased will that be when they go a ton of LA games while in basketball. Tucson’s own Chris Rastatter isn’t allowed to do a UofA game.

No doubt the conference is far better when the LA schools are competing near the top but the crying from the USC fans and coach is such BS.

UCLA @ Oregon

I don't see us winning our last three games, starting in the Rose Bowl, coming off playing USC followed by the frozen tundra of Salt Lake City. But, while life is tougher on the road in the cold rain, I believe we did at least as well against Oregon as UCLA is showing, so if the football transitive property hadn't been debunked so many times, you'd think we should be able to hang with them. The craziest damn thing is that Kevin Sumlin beat Oregon in his first year at Arizona, and he beat UCLA in his second year. UCLA was down, but Oregon was decent. (That's it for Sumlin's highlights, by the way.) You might win a trivia contest with that one.

Stanford so desperate for attendance they're giving away FREE tickets:

“People can now get free tickets to the final two home games against BYU and Washington State to test out potentially locking in season tickets for next year. “Get free tickets to our final two homes of this season, and lock in those same seats for the entire 2023 home schedule, which features games against Cal, Notre Dame, Oregon and more,” the Cardinal announced."

I can't imagine why the Pac-12 has to partner with a streamer to air its major games.

Bay Area college football attendance is a good example of the dramatic drop in football attendance in some regions.

Both schools had huge reductions in stadium capacities, and even now still can't sell them out.

My Dad attended Stanford in the early '40's and it sucks because they had a great tradition. Won a couple of Natty's including in 1940 where Frankie Albert "they say" revolutionized the game.

Great QB's too - Albert, Brodie, Plunkett, Elway.

CatsbyAZ wrote: Tue Oct 25, 2022 6:40 am Stanford so desperate for attendance they're giving away FREE tickets:
From USA Today - the promotion did not go over well, quickly turning into "a clown show on social media as the promotion quickly disappeared just about as soon as it was posted, meaning either there was a rush and those tickets were quickly scooped up or the administration saw the backlash it generated and came to their senses.”

“Either way, fast forward to Saturday when the Cougars came calling to Stanford Stadium – and you could see why anyone in their right mind would want to stay away. The Cardinal found themselves down 42-7 at halftime en route to a 52-14 beat down in front a listed 26,000 in attendance.”

As a sideshow of how poorly Stanford’s season is going (not surprised if Shaw is fired this month) Stanford’s student’s war with the administration over their restriction of campus celebration and parties has spilled over to the football bleachers:

“Student concerns are also not going away: one month after Eurotrash was postponed, four students, including mascots from both Stanford and Arizona State University, walked a 40-foot banner with the same “Stanford Hates Fun” slogan into the middle of a football game during Reunion Homecoming.”

We don't have a dedicated Cal football thread so I'll just post this here -

The $17.5M deal the Cal Bears signed with FTX for naming rights to the football field is up in smoke after the collapse and resulting bankruptcy of FTX Crypto Exchange.

And Cal with the worst football stadium funding contract in the history of mankind. Contrast this to Stanford only spending $90M.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/168 ... erspective

Stadium debt already absorbs 20 percent of intercollegiate athletics' annual income, or roughly $18 million of its $89 million budget. And that pays only the interest.

Cal won't start paying down the principal until 2032, when its yearly payments rise to $26 million, then $37 million, before tapering off in 2051. After a brief respite, Cal will owe a lump sum of $82 million in 2053 alone. Then it will have six decades to pay off the final 17 percent, or $75 million.

Incurring $445 million in debt at a California state school was a bad idea. The stadium had to be made seismically sound. But the additional money spent on the athletic center was not a smart decision in a down economy.

The report notes that "even if every endowment seat were sold, Cal would still be short by $134 million." If Cal had passed on building the athletic center, it would be in the black by $19 million.

The Cal's president was quite adamant about getting rid of Larry Scott, since they weren't getting the money they expected. But ASU's Crowe and other campus presidents kept him on way too long.

I don't follow Cal athletics, but I imagine they would jump at a Big 12 offer. I imagine calls have been made.

I know some posters here think Cal should stay for the good of the conference, even if it costs them, but you have to look at the bottom dollar.

Both their teams squashed #4-ranked offensive juggernauts with superior defense…. Pretty impressive!

BTW, Lincoln Riley is an asshole for leaving the injured (almost defenseless) Williams in the game for that last offensive series!!

Utah vs USC

That was great.

The LA sports media narrative has been on "USC and UCLA having grown too big for the Pac-12", how USC will go to the CFP (and probably win it), how Williams will almost certainly win the Heisman (still a good possibility), and how Tyger (with a Y) and UCLA have a good chance to win the national hoops championship (that was before the two games in Vegas.) Now, the perpetually arrogant Bill Plaschke once again gets to pick the popped bubble gum out of his beard. On the way to Starbucks this morning, my wife and I were speculating on how he'd spin it. Injuries, obviously, but also how yesterday's "genius" Lincoln Riley "lost his mind" with his conservative play-calling. Well, yeah, if your star mobile QB is now stationary and you're down big and need to throw, that might affect things. On the other hand, if you are "too big for the Pac-12" and national championship contender USC with all they can offer in NIL compensation, you'd think they'd have some decent backup O-linemen and either be able to ride their superstar RBs to victory, or that they'd have an adequate backup QB waiting in the wings.

Guess not.

The Utes basically beat SC up in the 2nd half. Yeah the Williams injury hurt but Utah was bigger, faster and stronger i felt.

Oh, and they tackled a wee bit better…
