2022 Los Angeles Dodgers

Post by EastCoastCat »

Will miss Seager and Scherzer but no way were the Dodgers going down a 10/$325m & 3/$125m path.

T. Turner will go back to SS which is his natural position. As for starters hopefully Dustin May comes back strong. What they do with Bauer is still up in the air.

In the pen Jansen, Knebel and Kelly are FA’s so they just signed Hudson to come back to LA to help mitigate. Treinen can replace Jansen if he bolts.

Excellent move by the Dodgers to re-sign Taylor.

Need to shore up starting pitching as Kershaw is considering joining Seager in Texas which looks to spend like a billion dollars this offseason.

How can you sign guys without a CBA in place?

You get it in before the deadline and it counts.

Doesn’t mean there will be a season, but if they can agree to one he’s a Dodger.

Jansen signed by the Braves after 12 years.

Dodger bullpen will be a question mark. Hopefully, that loaded starting lineup outscores teams.

Dodgers trade Pollock for closer Kimbrel who in his first outing gave up 4 hits, 4 runs in 0.1 innings.

Not a fan.

Nice win at that wretched Coors field to start the season.

Kimbrel gets the save but after giving up a run.

With how valuable he is to the team, and how short Spring Training was, I can see why they took him out.

And he's not a spring chicken anymore too. I wasn't happy with it but understand that Roberts needs him healthy in this year's Dodger rotation.

Game has changed a lot since it's glory days
Last time a pitcher had more than 3 complete games was in 2016, with 5.

Catfish Hunter had 30 in 1975.

Is Reggie saying that Dave Roberts never played baseball? Because that’s just incorrect.

Also, there’s a reason why Reggie has never been on a coaching staff outside of being like a spring training special advisor.

I have met Reggie. He is a certifiable head case so I don't listen to anything he says.

And yes there is a reason why the Yankees don't want him to coach.

Set up reliever Hudson just went down for probably the season with an ACL. Also Heaney, a lefty starter brought in because of Buehler's injury, was placed on the 15 day IL.

Walking wounded. Did the Yankee's training staff move to LA? :P

Scored 5 early runs and held on for the victory last night.
Big double play turned by Lux was the pivotal play and it was reliever by committee that sealed it.
And there was rain at the end?

Kershaw vs. Darvish tonight should be awesome.

Pathetic after winning that many regular season games.

Yeah, the silent bats hurt but I was also worried about Robert’s bullpen approach to finish games.

Jess Mendoza

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

I am NOT a fan of most sports announcing. My usual move is to set the sound at about 10, so you can hear big roars by the crowd, but the annnouncers' non-stop inanities are just faint buzzing in the background. But when they're good, they're good. It just struck me how well Jessica Mendoza hits the right tone. Some people wouldn't accept a female former softball player as a MLB color commentator. But watching the Dodger broadcast last night, it's hard to see who could do it better. Pleasant voice, pleasant and enthusiastic persona, and spot-on comments. She's obviously just a very knowledgeable long-time MLB fan. Pairing her with the excellent Joe Davis certainly doesn't hurt; two pros who enjoy each other's company and work well together. Crazy that the Dodgers also have Orel Hershiser, who is at least equally exceptional. Maybe Vin Scully's gone off to be with Sandy, but the Dodgers have a very deep bench.

Dodger announcers have always been top class - although Rick Monday sort of grates me and for any old timers Jerry Doggett was comical at times.

The thing I appreciate most about Dodger announcers in general, especially Vinny, was they weren't homers like the Yankees John Sterling or others I've heard.

Yeah, Monday has kind of a superior know-it-all attitude to go along with the monotone voice. It's not like you're going to be able to go into the finer points of mechanics or all of the unpublished "rules of baseball" as a quick-in/quick-out radio color guy. I don't think most people care about that stuff anyway; he just wants to show off his great knowledge. Charley Steiner's okay. He's obviously no Scully, but he's solid and seems to have a fairly jovial approach. I think he takes a nap when Monday goes on one of his rants.

The Steiner napping thing reminded me of a funny bit. When I was a kid, we lived outside Chicago, where Jack Brickhouse did the Cubs and Bulls on WGN. "The Brick" was known to party a little. Maybe it was more the time difference than that, but one night I was watching a Bulls game at the Lakers. Just him with a microphone courtside. He droned on, then stopped talking, and you could just hear the PA announcer and crowd noise in the background. And then the snoring started. Chainsaw in the redwoods. I swear it went on for five minutes before he got woken up.

Just back from what may go down as "The Scherzer Suspension Game." Dodgers lost, although it was a beautiful day at the ballpark. But, screw all that. My question: If the Dodgers are going to copy the Giants with garlic fries, why do they suck so much? I hate the Giants as much as the next guy, but at their park, you can smell them everywhere, and they're a wonderful fresh hot buttery sloppy mess. They prepare them for you. At the Dodgers, you get to pay for a souvenir plastic helmet bowl, but it's crappy lukewarm frozen/microwaved/heat=lamped fries with a very sparing amount of garlic. I don't even care about the price, but either do it right, or don't do it.

TheCat - talking about food at a Dodger game without mentioning DodgerDogs is a complete fail.

Although even those are no longer as good as the old days when the dog was like 12 inches long (no jokes please) and had that wonderful smoked taste.

I am remiss, and OF COURSE I had a DodgerDog. Nicely grilled, and you CAN get the oversized foot-long Deluxe (or whatever they call it) for another couple of bucks. The only issue there is missing onions with just little sealed condiment packs, which I believe is true now most places, like Hi Corbett, etc. May be a post-COVID thing, or to avoid one of those gross TikTok "challenges" where children spit (or worse) on unsealed food in supermarkets or elsewhere. 2023.

Oh, man. Now you did it to me with Tommy's chiliburgers. Haven't had one of those in a while. There are like 20 of them, but none near where I live. I think the last time, I was living in Tucson and doing business and staying near Universal. On the way to a Dodger night game, I dove off the 101, went through the drive=thru, got back on, and made that tight connection to the NB 110 to get to the game. This is while balancing the messy thing on my lap and eating it (without spilling!) For once, the slow-moving traffic was a good thing.

I'm sure there are some there. I saw a few games in that funky little stadium. Actually preferred the old Comisky, believe it or not. Bad outing by Urias, and the Cubbie pitcher saw his no-hit bid blown in the 8th. Hopefully Dustin May does better, but it'll be in 47 degree weather with some rain likely. Meanwhile Dodger hitting has been bad so far this year. Smith, Freeman, Outman, and Betts are the only ones hitting, but Smith's still out with the concussion from the Giants, and Betts just got back from paternity leave. They'll eventually make some moves, but too much wishful thinking...it should have been sooner.

Dodgers are playing like “dog” shit. The hitting has been anemic and the pitching atrocious. It might be a very long year.

They're not the first, and won't be the last, organization to be caught in the middle of the culture wars. Damned if you don't (the boycott mentioned above) and after the reinstatement of the drag nuns, damned if you do (after yesterday's 13-4 Nationals loss at Dodger Stadium, Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams called for a boycott of the Dodgers on the other side of the issue...not that he's petty.) All I know is the Dodgers lead the majors in attendance annually and bested the Cardinals by about 600K last year, so good luck with a boycott. If people don't want to go to games in their communities when the Dodgers come to town, I'm fine with that. Meanwhile, I've got tickets for the series this coming weekend with the Yankees, so people can judge the effectiveness of a boycott by looking at the attendance numbers for that. (Gotta get there early, especially with Frank McCourt still running the parking lots.)

Just like we have upper and lower boards there is a proper place for everything.

Dodgers were stupid to go down this slippery slope. Now they've announced they will have a Christian night. What's next Jewish night? Muslim night?

Stick to sports and stay out of politics, religion, etc...
