I know I'm inviting all kinds of limousine liberal insults right now, but... still would like to hear people's thoughts if anyone has any. Thanks.

Never the south of France, but I have family in Turin and Genoa. The Piedmont is gorgeous. I don't know much about hotels and restaurants because I stayed with family, but it was a wonderful trip about 10 years ago.

when are you going?

The trip is mid-May, through Memorial Day. I think we will definitely go through Genoa but Turin might be a bit out of the way. Tentative plan is to go from Nice through Genoa to Cinque Terre.

Just recommendations for things to see/restaurants to go to. I've never been to either country.

Monaco is fun for a day or so, if you can afford it. I couldn't, but that didn't stop me. :-)
Saint-Tropez is also a trip. Seems almost all the British rockers of the 60s and 70s frequented ST. Immortalized in a bunch of songs as well.

Luckily have a connection that is getting us onto a hotel balcony overlooking a long stretch of the track from which we will watch the Monaco Grand Prix. Can't wait for that.

Is Saint-Tropez a place the requires a night or two stay or can it be done as a day trip from Cannes?

Wow! When you return you'll have to share some photos of the Grand Prix. I've been wanting to visit for the race for years. Regarding S-T: You can get the feel of the place on a day trip, but you'll miss the elegant (and not so elegant) nightlife and sights that still draws the 'important people' from the UK.

Wait, now that I think of it, I did visit Nice and Monaco. Rented Vespa in Nice and Vespa'd to Monaco. Thats where I feel in love with that mode of travel.

Check out the casino and drive around the formula one track.

Forgot about that when fighting off my Halal Pepperoni Pizza coma an hour ago.

Was in Cinque Terre in October. I'd recommend you don't stay there but in the next village either up or down the coast. It's really easy to get into the park from either direction via train or boat. The boat tour up and down the park is a must.

Why would we insult you for not having been to a particular place? I mean outside the normal, everyday desire to insult you, that is. ;)

Edit: Sorry, meant to say that Levanto is a nice place to stay for easy access to the park, and it's got a couple hours' worth of restaurants and other things to do itself.
