This bit from ESPN's story of Kingery's 6-yr $24 million extension with the Phillies:

Kingery's contract gives him the most guaranteed money ever for an amateur drafted player who has never played in the major leagues.

The previous such contract record was $10 million

Also this gem of a comparison to an old scummie:

Not bad for a former walk on that literally fell into our laps. Better to be lucky than good sometimes right? Kingery is an awesome guy too, he deserves nothing less than success.

Refsnyder had a sweet diving catch last night but I can’t find video of it yet.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Regarding the walk-on status, I think he came from Phoenix. With only 11.7 scholarships in baseball, the lion's share goes to pitchers and I assume out-of-state kids are second in line.

They're both gone. Austin Wells is the next one to look out for. If he enrolls he's our catcher for the next 3 years.

It’s sad as we had a lot of talent but just could never seem to put it together this year

Afraid next year will be a step back too

The fact that none of those 6 were drafted out of HS gives me hope. Next year certainly looks down like it will be down but let's see how the roster rounds out. Maybe we have a couple guys pull a Nate Bannister and turn it all around. I don't know. You guys know I go looking for any signs of hope.

I don't think next year's team will be that down, but then again it just depends on the pitching. Randy Labaut will be our ace next year as long as he's healthy and when he was playing this past season he was our best pitcher. Plenty of returning contributors in Gil Luna, Zach Sherman, Avery Weems, & Jonathan Guardado plus this recruiting class is chalk filled with tons of options at pitcher. Our best pitching recruit last year (Roman Phansalkar) needed Tommy John so he missed the season, but will be available for next. The bats should be more than fine with Cannon, Quintana, Blas, Fraizer, Williams, and Soderstrom returning.

Looks like we may escape without losing anybody else. Austin Wells (170th ranked prospect per MLB.com) hasn't been drafted yet and we're already through 22 rounds. He's going to be a huge bat for us for the next 3 years.

#majorleaguetrainingground. Hopefully this draft showing continues to grow our recruiting. I think those 6 greatly improved while with JJ and staff and all improved their draft position.

Just don't get the 11.7 scholly limits for baseball. I thought maybe it was to level the playing field in college baseball between cold weather schools who are at a disadvantage but now that has been done why not give each school 15 ships to pass out?

I thought title 9 was to have equal sports teams among men and women's athletics? Give me a solution that would allow for an increase in scholarships in baseball?

Equal scholarships not equal sports. Football takes up so much of the men's scholarships that baseball gets the shaft.

There's 3 parts, I think it's number of sports/scholarships/participants, but don't quote me on that.

We had about 5 or so recruits go in rounds 32 or later. I doubt any of them don't make it to campus.

So what is a typical out of pocket expenses annually for a baseball player on a 1/2 scholly? Do they have a training table like football players get?

Pretty sure non scholarship athletes have full training table and staff access now, I think the NCAA changed that a couple years ago.

Great article about next year's team, https://tucson.com/sports/arizonawildca ... 04a07.html" target="_blank

They will be young but talented. Success will depend on how much the young guys improve before the season begins,.

So the baseball team gets 11.5 scholarships but they have a 45 man roster? Is that correct?

I don't know how many scholarships are available, but I just looked at the roster and there are 45 kids listed. All but 9 of them are freshmen or sophomores.

They get 11.7 athletic scholarships that in the normal times they can split between 27 players. For COVID times, they can split that same 11.7 between 35 players. (this year and next.). That’s why schools like Vandy have an advantage because their endowments allow for money for academic scholarships for “all students of need”.

It’s also why in some pockets like around Ole Miss, they offer in-state tuition to bordering states. I know Arizona and Cali were exploring that but I don’t know if it actually happens. You can’t just offer that to baseball players, it has to be available to everyone but baseball was the impetus for some of those schools.

FWIW Softball gets 12 scholarships. The NCAA doesn’t specifically limit roster size but only 22 players can travel to post-season, and most of the conferences have travel limits in season.

I saw a TMoble/MLB ad today and it had a part with Austin Wells. Just caught a second of it so I’m not sure how they were using him.
