That was an amazing game! Love Maddie's performance and how the team really showed up on national TV once again.

The defense is finally starting to look like an Arizona defense. Honestly I think Oregon has more talent but we played relentless. If the D keeps improving this could be a really good year.

The next two games at Colorado and Utah are going to be really tough games. Utah is ranked 8th in the country but Colorado beat them by 10 this past Friday.

Post Game Handshake

It's interesting how much the Oregon official party line has been to down-play the rivalry aspect of the series with Arizona, after Kelly Graves cursed at Adia in Eugene. I'm sure that's an embarrassment they'd like to sweep under the rug. But, both the Portland newspaper and P.J. Brown appropriately brought it up in their scene-setter stories before yesterday's game. The post-game handshake line was interesting. Other than one of our players who evidently knew an Oregon player pretty well from a club team or something like that and shared a brief hug, Arizona players didn't make eye contact or say a word. Not even the typical generic and insincere "nice game." Just high-five brush hands looking grimly straight ahead and keep on walking. It goes without saying that Sabrina Ionescu is a great player in the WNBA with New York. But, she also got away with a lot of unappreciated antics against Pac-12 teams while at Oregon, which is a completely separate issue. Despite some fans being star-struck, great talent isn't a hall pass for bad behavior. I think that may have been the genesis of some of the bad feelings toward Oregon, even before Graves shot off his mouth. And note the shared characteristics (not talent) of both coach and player.

Well, the road is rarely easy, and this one doesn't figure to be a walk in the park. In games of consequence, Colorado lost early at Texas Tech in overtime, and then got blasted on the road at Tennessee and at Utah. Those are all three of their losses. But, they appear to have improved, as they swept their more recent road swing through the Washington schools by comfortable margins. And the evidence of improvement is there with the re-match with Utah in Boulder, where they won by 10, which is a 37 point swing from their blowout loss in Salt Lake. They've got a nice point guard in Jaylyn Sherrod, as well as some size, starting two 6-3 bigs, with another 6-3 off the bench who is tied for second on the team in blocks in limited minutes.

ASU Takes Two Forfeits?

I never remember this prior to Covid. According to P.J. Brown, due to illness and injuries, ASU won't play at Utah and Colorado this weekend; they'll just accept two forfeit losses. Don't know how Utah and Colorado draw for WBB, but their fans are certainly deprived of a home game they expected. If it's a blowout against the deep bench and walk-ons, so be it. They could have still rooted for their stars, and then checked out their own bench to see how they're progressing, like a spring training baseball game. Also don't know if P12N had the games in their inventory or the financial impact (insert woeful ratings punch-line here.) But the main thing to Arizona fans is that our second game, at Utah, is Utah's only game. They'll be rested and entirely focused on our team. For that matter, Colorado can go all out in the first game and not rest their starters as much. So, it potentially affects us competitively. Some people (not me!) used to root for ASU's men's team to be more competitive so the opposition had their attention divided over a weekend. I just think this issue should be looked at more closely by the conference. Meanwhile, if ASU was going to infect Utah with whatever they've got (insert punch-line here), at least we won't get it indirectly from them.
