To coin the Grand Moff, the last remnants of the Sunny Jim era have been swept away.

Still can't believe he had to hire a search committee to get Butts. What a Larry Scott-level hire.
I always thought the Butts hiring was a head scratching. Her retention after years of losing was equally puzzling. The next hire cannot be any worse.

She was an assistant coach on an NIT team, so yea, quite a head scratcher. And they paid a firm to find her?

And thus it ends:

At 5'11", Barnes isn't as tall as most post position players vying for a position at the highly regarded Division I schools. The University of Arizona head coach Joan Bonvicini didn't think she would be able to play at that position, even after watching film of her play. However, after seeing her in person, she immediately offered Barnes a scholarship, who enrolled in the school for the 1995 season. Her physical play earned her a comparison to Charles Barkley from a Sports Illustrated writer. In her freshman year she earned the Pac-10 freshman of the year award, the first player from Arizona to win such an award.[4]

In her sophomore year, the team earned a WNIT bid and won the championship. Barnes was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.[5] As a junior, Barnes helped the team to their first ever NCAA appearance. They won their first game against Western Kentucky, and then lost by six points to the second seed in their bracket, Georgia.[5] She went on to set 22 individual records for the Arizona Wildcats, including career points and rebounds, many of which are still records.[6] She would go on to become the first women's player in Arizona to be drafted into the professional leagues.[7]

She actually is.

Welcome back Adia!

Now let's give Wildcat Nation something to cheer about....

Todd Holthaus was the right hire. Pretty disappointed Byrne took the lazy route and just picked the alum. I hope she succeeds where many others have failed though.

Todd's old boss at UA chimes in:

On Todd at PCC:

Didn't know Ros was at PCC too.

Well Byrne has yet to make a bad hire so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. All we want is for the women's team to just be a respectable program instead of the doormat of the conference for year after year

Glad for Adia but this is a shocker. Adia has no head coaching experience, just like Nia Butts, so why not go with someone who has proven he/she can win as a head coach? My thinking is because the women's basketball program is at a place where the only way to go is up, hiring a former Cat could bring more interest and if she succeeds, she would probably stay here and not go to another school. Good luck Adia.

If there was a men’s basketball thread back in ‘82-‘83 season it would have been worse.

It's still so surreal how the program goes from Niya Butts to Adia.

Am I imagining things or has ASU never made a women's title game despite all the smoke blown up Charli Turner-Thorne's hindquarters for two decades by the Phoenix media?

They haven't made a Final Four even. Two EE's.

Wow. The bubble effect is indeed real. So much ASU hype, even in WBB, with so little to show for it.

I saw AzFamily try to jump on the Wildcat train after the Indiana win ("We're ALL going to be cheering for the women blah blah blah") and I just chortled. We all know better now than to believe that bandwagoning BS.

She's been to the tournament 15 times in 25 seasons there but only has 2 elite 8's and 5 sweet 16's

I don't follow WBB hardcore but enough. I looked it up last week and was shocked myself. You would think they were on Tennessee's level circa Pat Summit. The hype has died down lately but I remember at one point it was pretty high.

That and Texas were the two programs ASU was compared to by the local media.

For a couple years in the mid-2000s, ASU was even pimped as the heir apparent to Stanford. Watch and learn, reporters, and knock off the puff pieces on women's hoops.

Also, the men have ZERO PAC-10/PAC-12 Championships (regular season and tournament)

The women have no outright PAC-10/PAC-12 regular season championships (two ties) and only one conference tournament win in 2002.
