The women's team lost their opening game 76-72 to Bakersfield. Looks like another long season for the women's basketball team.

Isn't it about time for Greg to take a serious look at woman's basketball.
We upgraded their facilities this year , what's next ?

Wasn't the deal that they didn't want to fire Butts with the recruiting class she was bringing in? Well, she brought them in. Now it's time to get rid of her and start over with someone much much better.

The program has been like current men's Oregon state/usc bad for a good 8 years now. Attendance is nonexistent. Time for some changes

Just drop the whole program. UA WBB loses $2.5M per year and pick up some other women's sport.

The Cats lose at home to asu 88-41 and are now 0-3 in the Pac-12. GB is probably looking at who to interview in April already.

Yep, I think this year was her last chance to make something happen with the decent recruiting class.

Jeebus. So crazy that our two teams in the same sport are so far apart.

After losing their second game to asu in a span of three days last Saturday, the Cats traveled to Stanford and lost 77-47 last night. The team is now 0-5 in conference play.

She seriously makes more than Andy Lopez? That's ridiculous.

I've caught a bit of their last two games and holy crap did they look bad. I hope Byrne has had enough because no Arizona team should be a doormat.

Isn't she 1-20 now v. ASU?

She was an assistant coach on a NIT team when she was hired. Very low expectations to begin with. Wasn't some major basketball coach interested in the position?

The coach at Maryland is a UofA alum but she has already won a championship so I doubt we could get her.

Raise your hand if you would have thought that the men's team would have lost to ASU, and the women's team beat Stanford. Go.

This team should be banned from using McKale and any of the new facilities until they put together a respectable program. Watching that video with GB and Miller and her and she kept going on and on........ she doesn't deserve it, put her in Bear Down gym or fire her.

Bear down gym is covered in carpet and cubicles for English department TA's. But she should be fired after this year. Women's basketball isn't exactly our favorite sport here but it's embarrassing to more or less be the worst program in the conference for the last decade with average attendance under 1000.

Not done yet against UCLA losing by 30+ with about 5 minutes to go on the gametracker I just saw.

0-4 all blowouts since that #BREAKTHROUGH against the worst Stanford team I've seen in my lifetime (lol this might be an exaggeration but is it?)

There has to be a legit coach out there that would take the job. Hell if you are gonna just give a young woman the job and let her learn at it, just hire Adia Barnes off the Washington staff.

If the Twitter comments are to be believed she has one year left on her contract. Wish Byrne would just pull the plug now, but I guess it's cheaper to wait? Still, one more year of this shit show. Ugh.

Byrne: Since no one cares about women's basketball, it's just cheaper to keep 'er.

Arizona women’s basketball’s season came to end on Thursday as the No. 11-seed Wildcats fell 80-62 to UCLA in the first round of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament held in Seattle, Wash.

With the loss, the UA ended the season with a 10-20 overall record. Arizona’s last winning record was in 2010-2011.

Didn't feel like starting a new thread

Saw Coach Butts at Tucson International a few weeks back. Said "hey coach" and she completely blew me off, lol. A male coach would have been asked "you guys going to actually be competitive this year" but I let it slide

Irks me to no end what the drain the WBB program is on the AD, and how much Butts makes in terms of the other coaches, especially those who have won national championships.

It's hilarious she makes more money than Candrea and Lopez did, let alone 30k and 50k more, respectively. If I would have seen this before she blew me off maybe I would have said something, she should be able to take that heat from a nobody for $210k a year cuz she isn't earning it on the court.

Isn't she 1-13 against ASU the last 7 years? Can you imagine any other UA program losing so badly to the rival where the head coach keeps their job? Thought she brought the top recruit in the nation in a few years ago too.

By far the worst coach on campus, now has some of the best facilities in the country so excuses are non-existent. Tucson has proven it will support a winning women's sport. Our women's basketball program has been bad for so long.

I am just shocked Butts hasn't been fired as I doubt we will be any good this year. Very puzzling but only good news is Byrne has hired great coaches in sports like Soccer, Golf, Swimming (Well Demont not Hanson), and Baseball. I would think U of A could attract a great coach from a smaller school like Johnson with Baseball. I like that strategy much more then the higher an assistant from a big time program. Arizona is too big a school to be someone's training ground.

No excuse for the program to be this putrid. Hasn't done anything in upwards of a decade. Not all of our sports are great but pretty much every sport at Arizona from women's track to men's golf and everything in between are at least competitive and in the middle of the league except women's basketball. It should be the #4 or so sport on campus yet they struggle to get 1000 people to come to games.

ASU has won 23 of its last 26 games against the Wildcats, and since Niya Butts became Arizona’s head coach in 2008, Arizona has gone 33-101 in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils: 84-50.

Good Lord. We all know the women's team sucks, but I had no idea things were THAT bad. Whoever Byrne hires can't be any worse.

Yeah since we went to the tournament in 2005 and I think actually went to the sweet 16 we've been basically the last place doormat for a decade. Women's basketball attendance is about 900 a game.

Her contract expires at the end of the year, so she won't be fired, she simply just won't be retained. Byrne have to go for a cheap hire with a high ceiling.

Fwiw I don't think there's such a thing as a profitable women's basketball program. I don't even think UCONN makes a profit in the sport.

Byrne and the UA will open a national search for Butts' replacement. Colorado State's Ryun Thompson, Santa Clara's JR Payne and Oregon State assistant Mandy Close are considered to be among the top coaches in the West. Pima College's Todd Holthaus, a former UA assistant, could also be considered for the UA's vacancy.

nee Brase, right?

To coin the Grand Moff, the last remnants of the Sunny Jim era have been swept away.

Still can't believe he had to hire a search committee to get Butts. What a Larry Scott-level hire.

I think hiring Ryun Williams from Colorado State would be a home run. The guy has won everywhere he has coached and what he has done at Colorado State is very impressive.

Her brother Matt Brase (sure you remember him) is HC for the NBDL Rio Grande Valley Vipers team would be another good choice, and a great AHC for her if he wants a more steady job/
