PER is virtually identical as far as offense goes, defense is not a contest.

Whatever. TJ has a chance to lead Arizona to the Final Four and that is a much bigger deal. We can just show our worth on the court. Our continued dominance will be a better calling card than the way we get shafted with awards.

It's easy to overlook people. Michael Jordan lost the MVP to a few people (Malone, Barkley) purely based off the fact his greatness was old news. Same thing with Miller.

Coaches don't like other coaches who beat them, whether it be on the recruiting trail or on the court. It's no shock that Miller didn't win COY...as I can think of maybe 1 or 2 coaches who would even vote for him.

The other coaches decided "Anyone But Arizona" and picked accordingly. I'm honestly surprised they didn't also snub Stanimal but that would have been insanely obvious.

I really do think it's a jealousy thing. Bill Self just won the Big12 for the 11th time in a row with a team that lost the #1 and #3 picks in the NBA draft, and yet he didn't win the COY award in that conference either.

I know Romar and Miller like each other, and I get the feeling that there is a mutual respect between Miller and K. Tinkle seems like an ok guy, need more time to evaluate.

It's just dumb. Krystowiak would have been a better choice than Altman. Altman has that sleazy edge of overperforming after a rape scandal. I don't doubt there's some jealousy, but it's easier to take consistent excellence for granted vs the guy who isn't supposed to win like that.

I guarantee you TJ cares, he knew exactly what was riding on this. Every player wants to have their name on a banner at a storied program.

This is do true allowing Payton to gamble while RHJ plays straight up man yet only allowed less than 35% to the oppositions best player.

Payton had the stats but the scouts know who the leagues best defender was. Can't wait to see Miller's comments and our motivation this week.

Absolutely. And I KNOW Sean Miller cares about this snub. Losing to Delon would be one thing, but losing out to Joseph Young of all players is a slap in the face to everything that TJ McConnell and Sean Miller stand for on the basketball court.

Well, since I'm late to the party, most of my initial thoughts/reactions have already been stated.
Chicat wrote:This conference is a joke. Fuck the coaches. Bunch of jealous motherfuckers who didn't like getting their asses handed to them by Arizona.
Yep
Chicat wrote:Sean Miller absolutely cares that his man TJ McConnell just got denied conference player of the year. You think he doesn't? Ha!
Correct
Chicat wrote:Let's not forget that last year Aaron Gordon didn't make the all-defensive team. So it's not like this kind of dumbfuckery is unprecedented.
Not unprecedented, but still putrid.
gumby wrote: Can't believe a guy who plays in a zone gets DPOY.
Possibly believable that an on-ball defender as good as Rondae doesn't win it, but unbelievable to lose it to a guy who plays zone.
Chicat wrote:The coaches in this conference are some jealous little bitches.
Yup
'ZONA97 wrote: RHJ got shafted as bad as TJ IMO.
I'd even say they gave the slightly bigger shaft to Rondae. Hmm, that sounds dirty, but you know what I mean.

With how much TJ cares about AZ basketball (hello, he even kissed the A on his last walk off the court!) one would have to believe he wanted to win this and get his name up in the ring of honor.

Such a joke that he didn't get it.
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

But POY and DPOY are a complete joke.

Blood bath from teams being brutally screwed by refs is equally likely. Most likely us.

During the awful run of calls vs Furd, I told my friend the refs must have bet the under.

I do think there is an element of that a coach that gets all the good players isn't necessarily a great coach when he wins with those players. I do think there is some truth to that in that sometimes its the lucky breaks you get in working at a school that brings in great players merely by history or location. UCLA is a great example of this. Now Miller took a program that had been essentially built from the ground by Olson (although Snowden had some good years here) and then had been run back into the ground to an extent and put it back on track quickly. Miller uses the past history of the program to help bring in new players. Of course, Oregon St. has just a shining history as Arizona but has completely been driven into the ground. Both Washington and Oregon have recent successful years but have not been able to keep a consistently good program. Stanford and Cal both have some good recent history but have been unable to keep consistency. Wash St and USC are just black holes. ASU is in a different category of awful all together. Utah has a past and a recent awful past. Colorado thinks it has history but doesn't.

If anyone would have deserved COY over Miller it would be Tinkle at OSU because he got his guys (who were far less talented than anyone) to buy into a defensive scheme. But we've seen this type of play before in our conference from WSU which made life miserable for everyone who played there but basically a crappy team everywhere else. It is cute but ultimately a gimmick to win some games at home. It doesn't get you to the NCAAs and it only gets you a few extra wins at home.

Miller lost some key players and had to fit the squad together. It took about half of the year for guys to get their roles and their acts straight. But through these difficulties, Miller's team ran away with the conference (first time Arizona has gone back to back titles in 21 years) without the best player in the conference and without the best defensive player in the conference. In fact, Miller won the conference with a center and power forward that apparently none of the other coaches would have wanted. I don't think there is any question that Miller was COY.
Erlich Bachmann: Richard wrote the code, yes, but the inspiration was clear. Let me ask you something. How fast do you think you could jack off every guy in this room? Cause I know how long it would take me. And I could prove it.
