Choo! You're flirting with 97Cats-level insider status!

Thanks for these updates, brother.
I will never be nor aspire to be as much of an insider as my man 97 is. He was also able to talk to Seth Davis without sucker punching the man. Based on that fact alone I'll never be able to sniff that level.

Fair enough, Choo. 97 still gets top billing, of course. But your updates are still among the most valuable info on this board.

Baker is a great get. Got a bad feeling we’ll never see DD suit up for AZ again, but I think it’s an understandable trade-off from our perspective. And I know we talk a lot about recruiting more Miller-esque players, I think likely pushing DD out for Baker is definitely a step in that direction.

I just can't see this roster holding. Somebody besides Baker would need to redshirt, and I don't see anyone in this current makeup willing to sit out next season and develop. Koloko maybe, but would prefer Barcello.

I mean, how does any coach keep this rotation happy?

PG Mannion/Hazzard
SG Williams/Doutrive/Smith
SF Green/Randolph/Armstrong
PF Nnaji/Lee
C Jeter/Gettings

That's asking a player who went to the NBA Draft combine after a full year starting to accept a sixth-man role. Even Rondae couldn't be that selfless.

We didn't recruit him much when he originally committed to Cal, but we certainly reached out and were very interested after he decommitted from them. Kentucky offered though and he was enamored with that and that was pretty much the end of our recruitment of him.

Well of course that roster isn't holding. 97 is just posting what is the current set up without anything in regards to who is leaving being official. Randolph for instance will not be on the roster next year whether he goes the pro route or not. The rest will be sorted out soon.

Kinda feels right now (I know it's early) like next year's team starting 5 and main rotation are set. Williams starting, Armstrong as a 2 or 3, Brown & Lee in the post. Baker could start at the 1 or 2, and/or maybe used as the main sixth man to play heavy minutes spelling both. Hopefully Barcello starts making 3s his senior year and Koloko turns into a rebounding and blocking machine.

But again it's early, we all saw how guys like Akot, Simon, Chol, Victor and Randolph turned out. I guess we'll find out during the year how Miller feels about that future core by how he's recruiting. Seems unlikely we land any big time recruits so we might just see that core.

I still wonder if Koloko redshirts. He could use it. He won't get time with our post rotation this year.

For next year, I think BWill, Baker, Armstrong, Lee and Brown would be a solid starting lineup if that's how it shook out. Even without more, that's a solid core, even if it's not the sexy one and done types we've seen a lot of lately. Add in some freshmen or grad transfers, and...voila.

Sorta doubt BWill plays college ball past 2019-20, but who knows?

But I agree: it's not a bad looking core. Just a significant fall off from this coming season.

BWill is short and has the knee issues. I love his game, but he's not a sure thing as a pro prospect, IMO. Jalen Brunson stayed 3 years.

My dream scenario is that Mannion is the type of player to want to come back and pass up a late 1st Rd draft grade. Williams doesn't really get a good NBA feedback and returns. Nnaji doesn't get a guaranteed 2nd Rd grade and returns. The NCAA sanctions/ruling doesn't happen for the 2020-2021 season..

Mannion
Williams
Armstrong
Nnaji
Brown

Yeah, his physical tools are too significant to be here two years. His biggest flaws are shooting and ballhandling, which are skills that will develop at the next level as well.

Considering how the NBA drafts, I'd think that Josh is 100% OAD, and Nico will be OAD if we have massive team success (because that likely means he looked like a better Lonzo), and questionable to return otherwise. I'd love it if none of these guys left after the year, although history says that's the least likely scenario.

Green’s passing ability will be huge. To have someone 6’6 who can pass will be so valuable against the eventual zone defenses we’ll see. I envision Green facilitating from the high post and killing opponents with his passing skills.

So if we land Brown, and he wants to play this year (assuming he can), what does our big rotation look like with the following?

Jeter

Gettings
Lee
Brown

That’s a lot of bodies for 2 positions. Don’t see any of them playing the 3, and even then we are full there too.

Gettings should also provide a zone killing option. He's an excellent passer with good experience and range on his jumper, though we're all wondering how he translates to more competitive basketball and whether he can get minutes at PF competing with Lee and Nnaji.

Good. Let's present it like that, then, and not go nuts. If it means keeping Doutrive on the roster, for instance, I'm more than willing to let go of Randolph.

And we need more transfers and recruits willing to sit out a year and develop--ideally to step in next year and be ready to start right away. It's better for the player and better for the program. More Rick Anderson types, fewer free agents. Koloko, Baker and Brown all need to take this approach.

Any idea if the program could get Barcello on an academic schollie so it wouldn't count against the limit?

Well of course that roster isn't holding. 97 is just posting what is the current set up without anything in regards to who is leaving being official. Randolph for instance will not be on the roster next year whether he goes the pro route or not. The rest will be sorted out soon.

I wouldn't get your hopes up on Doutrive remaining on the roster.
That's disappointing. I'd much rather have Doutrive than Baker.

Doutrive over Baker? Really?
