Been down on this team so far this year but got to give them credit for beating a pretty good USC team.

Yes, but it may take a couple coaching regimes to do that.
Way to pessimistic. We are about to change from out athletically teams to win to outplaying teams. At least that is my hope.

No Final Fours in 20+ years? We haven't been elite in over a generation. Close but no cigar. The program is and has been in a downward trajectory since we choked against Xavier in the S16. We'll end up being like UNLV or Georgetown. Once great programs that lost their allure. Mediocrity will be the new normal; It pretty much already has.

For the life of me I can't understand why players who have some good, raw talent think they're good enough to go pro. If Mathurin leaves, he'll be riding a bus and staying in $55.00/night hotels in the G-League for the next three years. If he stays, he could possibly become a first round pick in 2-3 years.

Maybe he is like Chance Comanche and just doesn't like school. Some players don't like going to classes and doing homework, and would rather play basketball all day.

Or his posse/camp is constantly telling him how good he is and how Miller is not utilizing him right.

So 2 games left, still no talk of rescheduling the final week. Could we play 2 or 3 more?

Terry was outplaying him by a mile against USC. He wasn’t effective and Miller benched him. There’s nothing weird about that.

truly the most AZ possible outcome of this offseason would be Mathurin leaving early...the team would be just good enough to not be upset heading into the year, but no real chance at a top 10 ceiling. it unfortunately feels like our destiny at this point haha

Wait, who said Mathurin has an attitude problem?
Sean Miller.

https://247sports.com/college/arizona/A ... 160486136/

“Benn has to have a great attitude and has to play with a total effort towards winning the game both on defense and offense,” Miller said. “His body language has to be great and he has to give us everything he has. When he does that, he is a very, very good player.”

On Thursday, however, Mathurin did not do that.

"I didn’t like the way he played,” Miller said. “I thought it was a reflection of our whole team. When somebody is not locked in and you have a couple guys going really, really hard and some others are not, we don’t have that luxury, and we’re not going to walk out at the jump ball and overwhelm any team in the Pac-12

I don't want to overstate the importance of having Mathurin return, but I think your forecast is very probable. We need his athleticism and scoring to hit that elusive next level. I'm going to assume he's coming back because I've seen nothing to indicate he's got one foot out the door. This team seems to have a good vibe.

When I think "attitude problem", I think of fighting with teammates, disrupting practices, and being a shit head. Call it the Chris Rodgers Effect.

Sounds like Miller is more trying to light a fire under Benn and that he wants him to bring 100% effort to every time he steps on a basketball court.

Re-Scheduling Games

Posted: Fri Feb 26, 2021 3:16 pm
by TheCatInTheHat
If memory serves, both UArizona and our "travel partner" ASU missed playing games at Eugene during the same week this season because of Covid protocols. In their case, if I understand it right, they got to play a doubleheader against Washington in TEMPE to make theirs up, while we've played a game Thursday, we'll play a game Saturday, then we'll fly up to Eugene to make that game up on Monday. That's after our Senior Day when we have virtually nothing to play for other than love of the game in a conference with demonstrably regionally biased officiating. I get that it doesn't really make any difference to us, and "we get to play one more game" in a season where each game conducted is considered a win over Covid. And I haven't done an exhaustive analysis of the consolidated schedule to identify the winners and losers in the postponed game rescheduling. But, there's at least one talking head type who has openly said that it's great to job the system and put a thumb on the scale "if it gets more conference teams into the NCAAs." Well, I think the point of athletic competition is to have exactly as many teams in the NCAAs as EARN it after playing a fair and balanced schedule. It's yet another reason to Ray Guy punt Larry (I can do you favors if you're nice to me) Scott out of the overpriced Pac-12 Embarcadero-area offices, across the Bay, and back to his house in Danville.
