I’ve been curious too but if he had any interest at all, he’d have moved down the hallway two weeks ago.

He's maybe an inch above Pastner in the "former Arizona players turned coaches" who I never want coaching their alma mater

If Sean is nearing the end of his time as coach here, would we replace him with another outsider? Maybe a non-issue. When Sean was hired, I don't think there were any guys connected to AZ who could even be *considered* as candidates, unless we include O'Neill and Pennell. We tried to hire Floyd (no AZ ties) and landed on Miller (no AZ ties).

I imagine you just hire the best coach you possibly can, and if he's got an AZ connection, all the better. But not having one certainly isn't a deal-breaker.

Didn't include him since there's absolutely 0 chance of that ever happening. Only way is if we pay him like $15 million a year.

Totally. Just pointing out that there is indeed a guy out there with strong AZ ties who would sort of be the ultimate hire.

Curious how people feel about Luke Walton these days. As a coach, I mean.

One would think Luke's reputation is questionable, but from his perspective, why leave an NBA job? College jobs seem much less attractive having to deal with recruiting, the NCAA, etc.

Who do I want? There are a lot of guys who I think would be an improvement.
I start with the following list and work from there (top 3 are unlikely, but worth a call)
Leonard Hamilton
Chris Beard
Bruce Pearl
Kelvin Sampson
Mark Pope
Randy Bennett
John Beilien
Russell Turner
Scott Nagy
Eric Musselman

To even entertain the thought of Pastner being our next HC is ridiculous to the point of being offensive. Every time someone suggests it I get the unbridled urge to punch their teeth through the back of their head. The guy should be selling used cars somewhere. No. Just no.

Bruce Pearl

The biggest f u to the NCAA

He can’t stop blatantly cheating and the NCAA would rightly slap our program down forever

Leonard Hamilton? This dude was on the verge of being fired multiple times and took a lot of heat for consistently underperforming...just like Scott Drew. It’s always what have you done for me lately, which is awful.

Hamilton - Too old to switch jobs
Chris Beard - Reaching that final four makes him harder to pry away with family in the area
Bruce Pearl - The man is obviously untouchable, but no
Kelvin Sampson - Could we hire a former cheater with possible sanctions coming?
Mark Pope - Eh a possibility, wouldn't be in my top 5 choices yet though
Randy Bennett - I don't know what issues he has, but apparently he has some preventing him from getting bigger jobs. Arizona guy who wins, sign me up
John Beilein - Would be a very solid short term answer
Russell Turner - Eh, I wouldn't loathe it
Scott Nagy - Now that'd be an outside of the box hire. Would like to see some more tourney success though
Muss - Just took a new job at Arkansas, so not sure what his buyout is, if we could afford it, or if he'd look to leave that soon

I mean I get that he's been Fisher's right hand for a long time, but I don't foresee a world where the man would say no to a much bigger job than SDSU even if he helped Fish build that program into what it was.

I think the desire everyone has is to lean out of the recruiting coach and back to more of a tactician and great in game coach. If we do move on from Miller, I agree, but I will say I'm kind of nervous about this.

I would imagine we would still be solid in recruiting regardless of who we get because of the program's history. It just scares me because I don't want to see the talent level drop off too much. I don't need 3 one and dones a year and no roster consistency. But being able to compete for and land top level talent is what separates the historically top teams in CBB from everyone else.

The funny thing is Sean Miller was not a "recruiting coach" when we hired him. He deserves all the credit in the world for his recruiting at Arizona, but the Arizona name propelled him into his recruiter reputation.

My take is Arizona should recruit 1 top 25ish guy every recruiting class and a handful of 26-100 guys who are multi-year guys. I'm confident most coaches could do that easily here. Just need to get the tactician/great in game coach part down.

Remember when we thought CSM was a tactician, great in-game coach and always did less with more at Xavier? What we didn't know is if he could recruit. My how times have changed!

I just dont see it, nor do I think hes a great candidate anyway. I view him in the Few sense, but a much lesser version. He could take a bigger and better job, but hes comfortable and has 1000% backing and job stability. He comes to Tucson, is now tasked with recruiting at a high level instead of picking transfers, and hes on the hot seat if it doesnt translate.

I'm into Jans, he's very good. Gotta think we give Holtmann and Scott Drew a lot of attention to start though, right? Beilein with an outside shot.

More than anything, we need a coach that is willing to develop players.

Nope. That's why a strong bench of assistants matters. When Heeke overreacted and ran off Phelps, that crippled Miller (again). Jack Murphy should not be the top assistant. I think he's a good guy and a good coach. But what exactly has he done that's impressive? He struggled mightily at NAU, where the competition is weak. If you're a good recruiter or a good X & O guy, you can be decent or even good in the Big Sky. Murph did neither. Miller was so desperate for a decent assistant that he pulled Murphy because he knew he'd be loyal to the UA and knew the program. Losing Phelps was a significant loss. There needs to be some veteran assistants who can argue with Miller about X&O, personnel, etc... when the games are not taking place. Those conversations happen and dictate overall strategy involving Arizona players and the opponents.

Among library staff, coaches, tenured faculty, janitors, etc., this right here is as close as anyone is to losing a jobs at an institution of higher learning:

Anyone who wants to change their life immediately just needs to reach out and tap a butt. One small tap for a man, one giant grope for mankind. So easy, and yet even the drunkest people know it's better just to break that glass frame and try to walk away with Kareem Abdul Jabbar's 1986 purple shorts.

People that say Scott Drew have no idea about him as a coach or his tourney record. He has a great team this year. The best we could do is Rick Pitino if you did not care about optics. The best coach after that is Kelvin Sampson again a tainted guy but can coach. Choo wants 1 top guy and 4 four stars......not bad if you have a team of juniors but you wont have any top 10 classes which sent us to the elite eight a couple of times.

Pretty damn slim pickins if you ask me. Donavon if he loses his job would be great but highly unlikely he will lose his job.
