Thanks you guys. Those are good thoughts. My guess is they're practicing it. I'm glad the problem got exposed before heading into the NCAA tourney.

I'm sure they are. It's like zone. I'm sure we practice it with good principles, but translating those principles into games doesn't always produce reliable results.

Yeah, but like with the zone, the differing results from the games give you a different approach to working on the problem.

True. I did toss out the tweaks I like. There's just an underlying limitation revolving around the actual game transition that can be difficult to mimic.

If all else fails, mitigate the negative outcomes of the press with a positive when you do beat it. Looking like shit against the press, and 10 turnovers, and then going into our standard half court offense is not the same as looking like shit against the press, and 10 turnovers, and getting 6-10 easy layups/looks and our standard half court offense the rest of the possession. The press is a gamble, or more teams would employ it outside of mere desperation.

The bigger question is in a situation like Oregon. We were already up substantially and generally want to play a slower pace then they do. I'm sure they were happy to speed us up.

I'm not saying you don't still attack, but when you face a team trying to dictate tempo when down double digits, it's a difficult question.

IIRC, Duke tried to do this to us in 2011 when the game was starting to get out of hand, and we went full throttle and made it worse. I think that was the way we should have played it in the Oregon game, but admittedly, that would have been risky given our foul trouble situation. It may have also gotten Brooks out of the game earlier on the flip side.

Ramon is INTENSE...that was obvious to anyone who's seen 'At All Costs' on Netflix......on another note, I really enjoyed watching the 97 Championship game and seeing Bobbi, Bibby's Mom, Miles Simon's parents, etc in the closing minutes.....Also Lute turning his back on some of the FT attempts....lol, made me recall the crazy crap I was doing watching that game....one of the most nerve-wracking yet happiest memories ever re: Arizona sports. :-)

97 Cats vindicated again. This kid should never see the floor for a team with aspirations of doing anything. Miller needs to do whatever it takes to get Duval or we can write off next year.

He was god awful and next year he's penciled in as the starter. No scoring. No creating. Less than a traffic cone on defense. You seriously don't get the problem here?

Sure it's a problem but it doesn't even make my top ten for this game. Oh and btw Xavier just beat us with a nobody pg that we barely knew was in the game.

It would be great to see a pure pg in an Arizona uniform. Second season I've said that. Watching a shitton of old Arizona film recently confirms it for me. We are combo wing U but that doesn't get it done in march.

Needed to drop that wide open 3 at the top of key but he was about 10th on the things wrong last night.

Trier hero ball.
Mark not being aggressive enough / team not looking for him
Miller subs and coaching and use of TOS
Offense looking lost v 1-3-1
Defense on blewitt
Dusan D
pinder in game late, especially over Chance
3 pt shooting , almost all good looks
Kadeem foul trouble first half

Then maybe PJC.

I felt he had a really good night tonight. would have had a few more assists if the guys he passed to hit their open looks.

also coulda had a few more points too of course (that missed layup made me laugh though).
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

PJC actually was the MVP. ASU's four guard lineup allowed them to full court pressure all night long. It's too bad PJC had to take a couple of breathers because we needed him on every possession.

Otherwise, yeah. 6:1 ratio. That's something to behold.

And Holder's 31 points aren't on PJC.

Definitely.

But here’s what I don’t understand. He’s so good at breaking the press, so why doesn’t the team break toward the basket more often for a high percentage shot earlier in the shot clock? I understand that the purpose of that kind of press is to dictate a faster pace that favors ASU, but Arizona just seems to err too much on the side of holding up the ball to allow ASU to set their defense. When that happens, the feisty swarm in the paint makes it harder for our bigs to score or kick out to a shooter.

Agree. I think part of it is not trusting teammates at this point. He could press the issue, but then someone like Smith or Lee or Randolph jacks a shot without Ayton getting those touches we all say he needs.
Right where I want to be.
