The @pac12 has reached a sports data and technology deal with Tempus Ex Machina to manage and market the conference’s data rights.

The arrangement could set the stage for monetization of live data in the future.

Yeah an insanely expensive one in SF if I recall correctly. One of Larry Scott's great decisions

That’s the PAC-12 office.

I believe the PAC-12 Network office was in LA.

The P12 Network headquarters are in the same complex as the P12 offices.

https://www.tri-cityherald.com/sports/a ... 20915.html

The Pac-12 Conference will not renew the lease at its downtown San Francisco headquarters and will have its employees work remotely instead of maintaining a permanent league office. The conference's lease expires in June 2023. The conference was based in the San Francisco suburb of Walnut Creek until 2014, when it moved to be in the same complex with the Pac-12 Network. The Pac-12 Network's production facilities will need to find a new home. They could remain in San Francisco but other options are Los Angeles, Phoenix or Las Vegas.

Pinterest paid $89.5 million just to cancel their lease for new San Francisco offices.

Salesforce and Yelp also are canceling SF leases.

When you get production values that look like the 11 pm public access talk show, it's worth every penny.

Pac 12 network production goes like this.

Live events: for revenue sports, use 3 generic camera angles and either Bill Walton or some guy who played on a Pac 12 team in the mid 90's on the mic. Non-revenue sports, use a single, fixed camera angle set on the highest point in the nearest adjacent county and a single commentator I've never heard of.

Studio shows: Use the same studio with a slight change to the generic background for every show, then a panel consisting of people I've never heard of and whatever mid-90's athlete isn't commentating on a game at that moment.

Interviews: put someone in a high, folding chair in front of whatever's there (you're around shrubbery? That's your backdrop) and ask them questions. Is the topic more serious and emotional? Lower the chair and lights.

Spot on.
The worst has to be baseball games. The announcers are so bad you really ask yourself if they have ever watched a baseball game in their lives. And they miss half of the plays because they only have 1 full angle shot from behind the plate that they widen in and out to catch the action but are usually a second or two behind from their player close-up shots.

Las Vegas is the obvious answer for the Pac-12 HQ and has been for years.

* Lower cost of housing for employees = lower cost of labor.
* Cheap(er) industrial space could be converted into production and office space.
* Big tech presence already.
* Centrally located for the conference and easily accessible with cheap and plentiful flights and hotel rooms.
* Conf championship already located there.

Why not Vegas? Because the Pac-12 president wanted a castle for his throne instead of a factory to pump out good content.

Pac-12 Network

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

I think Kliavkoff mentioned Vegas some time ago. At the moment, per Wilner, they're just vacating their pricey office near the Embarcadero when the lease runs out with most people to work from home. They'll have to have some place for studios, which may be further south (San Jose?), or I assume could still be Vegas. Wilner's take is that the Pac-12 Network will live on, but I don't think that's been in doubt up to the point of the new 2024 media rights deal. And it would exist in some form, even if it's a single channel produced by ESPN or FoX or somebody else. We may wind up with some kind of subscription Pac-12+ streaming deal for lesser non-conference football and basketball games and baseball and softball. I'd be okay with that if it's available as an app on a smart TV like Disney+ or something similar. I just hate hooking up an HDMI cable from a laptop to a TV and messing around with all of that.

There's an app on my Amazon Firestick for the Pac-12 network that works pretty well for me; AppleTV has an app as well.

Sling has all the PAC-12 channels. I have the Cox streaming bundle, and you are stream Sling, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and other services right on the tv. Works well. PAC-12+ shows like baseball games not on the network still stream through the phone and cast to the tv. That's a little more spotty.

The PAC-12 made a bunch of mistakes with thee Network. Having expensive production offices in the highest rent city in the nation was just one of them. The big one was not partnering with ESPN or Fox, and instead, going it alone on the Network. Thee PAC-12 Network didn't get on DirecTv as a result, and nobody outside of the PAC-12 footprint can see anything on thee network on a sports bar anywhere in the country. That's because they all have DTV, because of the NFL Sunday Ticket. A mistake that can be, and should be corrected.

Especially true as the SEC leaves CBS starting in 2024. I'd like to see the PAC-12 fill the vacuum, and sign a deal to play on CBS, the CBS sports cable channel, and move all PAC-12 Channel content to Paramount+. Might not get us on DirecTv, but the future right now seems to be with streaming, and being aligned with a large service like CBS would be a good future play.

NFL Sunday Ticket will be moving to AppleTV or Amazon next year, so there’s no need to worry about getting on DirectTV in order to get into bars/restaurants.

In fact, I doubt DirectTV is even a thing in 5 years. Their dishes crap out in a slight drizzle and you can get literally everything you want through streaming services.

I had both Dish and Directv, and cut the cord maybe 5 or 6 years ago, and never regretted it. I don't need 500 channels with nothing on.

Just activate Sling when I want to watch UA sports since it comes with all the ESPN and PAC channels if you get the sports pack. Then cancel when the last UA basketball game ends.

Were they even bringing in enough revenue to cover the rent?

The other day I thought they might have some tournament coverage or maybe a baseball game, even a condensed replay.
Nope, instead they were showing random football games from 5 years ago.

Between 2009 and 2019, Scott earned $36,057,637, according to tax records, and assuming he is paid out for the rest of his contract, he will have earned roughly $50 million as the Pac-12 commissioner.

Short answer, not too much.

The bad news?

“Their contract negotiations come after the new SEC and Big Ten contracts,” Maestas explained, “so all the highest-performing content will be sorted.

“Everything is available, but they are late in the pecking order.”

The SEC’s media rights were recently locked up by ESPN, while the Big Ten is currently negotiating agreements that will start in the summer of 2023.

Those leagues account for the majority of premium football matchups that attract top media dollars. As a result, the Big Ten and SEC are expected to distribute in excess of $1 billion annually when everything settles in the second half of the decade.

By then, the Big Ten’s new deal will be humming, Texas and Oklahoma will be in the SEC, and the College Football Playoff will have expanded to 12 teams.

Not sure where else to discuss this, but UCLA and USC are exploring a move to the B1G.

Sounds like it would be a big step in the direction of the PAC going away. Probably some sort of merger with the big12?

Pac-12 schools are facing a $50 million fiasco after Comcast overpaid the athletic conference’s regional sports network. The company realized it was overcharged for licensing fees from 2012 through 2016.
----------------------
Sources report Chief Founding Officer Brent Willman and Networks President Mark Shuken have been fired. They, in turn, filed a lawsuit against the Pac-12 conference “alleging that they informed former Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott about the Comcast overpayment in a timely manner but were ordered to keep quiet about it.”

I'm very surprised it's gotten to this point. Losing the L.A. schools is bad, but the league could survive that. But if others start leaving, what kind of "conference" do we really have? I'm at the point where I'd prefer to be "independent," if joining the Big 12 is not an option.

Personally I am excited for the Bball team to have the chance to join the Big12, as some outlets are saying is being offered to the UA.

But at the same time this whole reorganization of conferences just to chase FB TV contracts and abandoning all tradition seems kind of wasteful, esp. considering travel, recruitment, old rivalries, etc. Wonder how most UA (non FB BBall) athletes would feel about it.
