He's also from the Sendek coaching tree like Sean and Archie. Was an assistant at NC State with Sean for 5 years and was also an assistant under Sendek at ASU a while back along with Archie. So he clearly has deep ties with the Millers. Had a head coaching stint replacing Keno Davis at Drake but it didn't go so well. I also remember that he was one of the top candidates to replace Whitford on the staff back in 2013 but that of course eventually went to Damon.

I'll say this though, the fact that Miller hired him so quickly is probably a pretty good sign that he has had him tapped as a replacement for any of the assistants leaving for a while. So far Miller has put together excellent staffs so I'm pretty confident that Phelps must be bringing something to the table for Miller to hold him in such high regard.
