The rankings are good for conversation, but I just feel like these metrics matter a whole lot less in a year without a postseason. We're playing for a Pac title, period. Two games at McKale this week. Winning them both puts us in the driver's seat for a Pac title.
I agree, but it can give us a good idea of where the team is at right now. Especially since we haven’t added Krissa yet. It’s nice to se that we are at this point right now and have a good idea of how good we should be next year with all of these players getting older, stronger, and more experienced within this conference and Miller’s system.

Also we are an exciting team to watch. Played an undefeated team to 2OT and won on an off shooting night. Last years team would crumble on these same off nights shooting. Glad to see we can win when the 3’s aren’t falling.

The joy I get from watching this year's team, compared to last year's, is immeasurably greater. I'm absolutely thinking about their potential beyond this season, but I'm also increasingly confident that this team can actually win the league title right now. Oregon may look the best so far, but they're not untouchable. Neither are UCLA or USC. I wasn't sure whether our team could hang in there with the Pac's best this season, but I have revised expectations. We may not win the Pac, but we can absolutely contend. And Sean freaking Miller deserves a ton of credit for that.

If we win the Pac, how is Sean not Pac COY?

WSU reminded me of our home loss to UW last year. Against UW, we had an .467% TSP and a .421 EFG. I get WSU is not a world beater, but UW was worse.

WSU was a .477% TSP and a .407 EFG. Very similar, and we fought through for a W. Against UW, we were down 15 at the half and I don't think we ever took the lead or got too close.

No guarantees, but I love getting a W when we honestly had every reason to lose.

I may be mistaken (probably so), but I seem to recall hearing, years ago, that coaches don't rank any team that is ineligible for postseason play.

I think it will be harder to get votes with the ban in place.

With all due respect, fuck the votes, fuck the polls.

Win games. It's all we need to be concerned about this year. If we win a Pac title, it will GREATLY reduce the sting of sitting out this year's dance. For me at least.

For me, I want to see us making the strides necessary for me to feel like next year sets up the way I want it to. I feel like next year's team has so much potential and potential continuity.

In a lot of ways, this year's team feels like a new beginning. Like it is potentially the starting point of an era of more stability, where we start to see the true potential of players develop more.

That's a great way of putting it, Spiff.

I think I want a Pac title for Sean more than anything. Given what he's been through, most of it undeserved, it would be pretty sweet for him to hang another banner the same year we're self-imposing this postseason ban. I'd love knowing that the best Pac team isn't even in the tourney.

I also want to see this roster remain intact heading into next season. That's the key for next year, of course. I do like those freshmen who've committed, but none is as important as our current starting 5, plus our first couple off the bench.

Anyone know where to find pac 12 networks viewership data? would be curious to see how it ranks in basketball for each school. also this year compared to previous would be an interesting comparison.

I tried a google search but couldn't find anything other than 2019 p12 football numbers.

So this is gonna be a big weekend. We're #28 in KenPom, SC is #27 and UCLA is #34.

The ultimate stakes on this season aren't what they used to be, but I think how we perform against similarly rated teams to us is always a great measuring stick. If you have goals at any point, these are the games you need to adapt to winning consistently.

It's also an interesting contrast. SC is big and does a lot of their damage inside. UCLA is much more perimeter oriented. All in all, a good developmental test in all ways.

Should be a great week of basketball.

USC is wild... they play a single 6'2" guard and then everyone else that will see the floor will be 6'6" - 7'0". That's assuming starting PG Ethan Anderson (6'1") continues to sit with a back injury. Will be interesting to see how Miller chooses to play them.

Honestly I think we fit pretty well with SC. Koloko, Brown and Tubelis are big enough to be legit matchups for the Mobleys and their midsize wings, Terry and Mathurin can match their size.

They're a good team, but we don't give up as much as most teams do. Also, they're less likely to be able to hurt us with game plans like Stanford employed.

Edit, I watched their opener vs Cal Baptist and Cal Baptist killed them by spreading the floor. If Baker, Brown and Akinjo can do their their thing, we could give them trouble there too.

I hope dalen terry dives for a ball over the announcers table and knocks him out of his chair.
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

ESPN doesn't actual travel to the PAC 12 games they broadcast. He'll just be in the studio.
“The reality is that the hardest games to win are over teams on their home court. Teams that don’t play those games can spin it however they want, but what they’re saying is, ‘We don’t want to lose in our non conference season.’" - Sean Miller

Still no Arizona player listed in ESPN's top 100 available for the 2021 draft:

https://www.espn.com/nba/draft/bestavai ... ovr/page/1

I hope everyone's back that can reasonably be back.

Well I was wrong on Tubelis not being ready to score 20+ in a game this year.

What a hell of a game he had and really showed the type of player he is capable of becoming.

Next year is gonna be really fun

That's the up/down of this year. You saw Mathurin's potential vs WSU. You saw Tubelis's potential vs SC.

We need to grow and get our youth firing on those cylinders more consistently. They all have such good potential.

Which is why I wasn't upset at all with that loss. With no tourney... lets just focus on individual player and team developments. (And finding consistency)

I'm fine with that approach. I still want to win, but it's not just to win, but to teach the team how to win.

I agree the season is about growth and development #1. No one is a OAD, and you can see what they can do if there's continual improvement.

Terry and Tubelis showed glimpses of some really nice chemistry... those two could be real trouble for opposing defenses with their size, touch, and IQ.

Tubelis finally would catch and face the rim in the high post vs the zone. It was making me crazy that he'd catch and pass without realizing he was wide open just to turn and shoot a 10 footer.

I don't care if he misses. He needs to shoot that wide open 10-12 foot J vs the zone every time. That's the shot that will make him effective.

He does need to work on FT's. A guy with that touch should not be shooting 65% from the line.

Oh, and we now have 5 players averaging double figure points.

Tubelis finally would catch and face the rim in the high post vs the zone. It was making me crazy that he'd catch and pass without realizing he was wide open just to turn and shoot a 10 footer.

My thing with Tubelis, you can see his stroke is there. He just needs reps and confidence and he'll be a dominator.

He reminds me so much of Domanatas Sabonis it isn't funny, and I could easily see the same freshman/soph jump.

Sorta think UCLA is an even worse matchup for us than USC, so I’m not optimistic for tomorrow.

It really surprised me to see both Akinjo *and* Baker have horrible games like this, at home, in a game we needed to keep pace in the conference race. Still a lot of games left, but going forward, our schedule is going to get tougher.

For tomorrow, we really just need our guards to play better. We can beat UCLA, but only if our shooting is much better.

Nah, we need to defend better. 58% from the field and 57% from 3, you can't reasonably outscore that.

You can't win giving up those percentages unless you're one in a million white hot. That's the be all and end all for us vs UCLA. We went from mid 30's in KenPom AdjD to #49 in one game.

We rebounded fine. Shots will fall or they won't. Defense has to be sharper. No other way around it.

We definitely should be better at brawling with the Bruins and we should hold our own on the boards.

USC is an enigma in that they have as much talent as anyone but their focus snd effort is iffy. They certainly were motivated last night

So...anyone like our chances tomorrow?

Our lack of fight down the stretch has me concerned, and I'd *think* they'd bounce back tomorrow. But I'm not as confident as I was heading into the weekend.

If we can keep it within 5 at around the 5 minute mark, I love our chances. If the Bruins are up double digits at that point, forget it.

I'll try to do something with one of the upcoming games. The ban took some of the wind out of my sails and my focus turned a bit more towards the Clippers and SDSU.

Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

#31 is tough - has potential

He'll only be playing for Arizona for two more months so that potential won't help us much. (grad transfer, Choo said he most likely will be gone despite being allowed one more year by NCAA COVID rules)

The self-imposed ban likely changed that. He may still decide to just go pro, but the odds of him coming back are much higher now than they were before, ditto with Ira.
