It's December 23rd. Kind of early for any such proclamations. Have a Merry Christmas. You can fear porn in March.

Arizona won every single metric possible outside of field goals made.

The team with the guards that went for 35 and 20 won as opposed to the team whose guards went for 26 and 15.

They followed the Purdue blueprint, have your 2 guards have career nights and outscore their two guards by 15.

We will be susceptible to these kinds of losses in the tournament as well, just like every other team. Would Purdue have beaten FAU tonight? I don't know, but they might not have. Kansas would have been run out, Houston hasn't played anyone, so that's hard to tell.

Now we've had 2 games where we've been torched by a tandem of prolific guards that had crazy stat nights. I'm sure Tommy will address this.
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

And they lost the most important metric; the final score.

I didn’t think Arizona played particular well either. I wonder if 3 big games in a week had any impact especially with travel involved.

My biggest fear isn't that we can't/won't improve and fix our deficiencies...

It's that the competition in the Pac is so bad that we won't know if we've really fixed these things until March....

Whenever concern about wishing the conference was stronger comes up, I like to bring up Tarkanian's UNLV teams in the Big West, and Wooden's teams in the Pac-8. Both leagues were generally miserable and offered little competition. Until the end of Wooden's run, USC got them a couple of times, then later the Oregon schools started getting better. But nobody in the BW could touch Tark, and both went on to win it all. Different eras and all that, but you can't control what you can't control, and getting good seeding and location means a lot, too.

We played now-#1 Purdue at a virtual home game for them, then Alabama, and FAU's Final Four team all in 8 days, none of them at McKale Center, while FAU had 7 days of rest and detailed preparation just for us. We made some poor choices in passes and shot selection, which will improve over the course of the season, and it still took 2 overtimes. We lost the equivalent of what UCLA lost in personnel (and look at them now), we've played a killer non-conference schedule, and we've made it to conference season with 2 losses and no doubt still a top ten ranking. ASU fans (honest or otherwise) are reduced to the pathetic state of just rooting for their rival not to win another national championship. Not a particular concern of mine, but something to bear in mind while dismissing that sort.

I hear you, but you have to look at what we just accomplished in Nov/Dec. 9-2 vs that schedule is pretty spectacular, imo. I trust that this team is hungry and that they’ll keep getting better.

No one remembers what happens in December. Only what happens in March.

You really can’t compare the two era’s. Wooden’s teams were so far and away loaded with talent because there was no scholarship limits he was able - with some help wink wink - to stockpile the best players in America. Today the talent gaps of the top teams and even the next level below is not that far apart.

That's what Marquette said before they lubed you up. Last I checked they're ranked lower in Kenpom than Purdue & FAU. Merry Christmas Jayhawk.

Moving forward... and up!!
College basketball rankings: Florida Atlantic soars after knocking off Arizona

Merry Christmas! Time to sneak into the bathroom to get your college basketball fix and not offend your family.

In this week’s Top 25, Arizona-FAU gave us the game on the year on Festivus, Houston’s Kelvin Sampson is about to join Hall of Fame-worthy company, Terrence Shannon Jr. is scary in an open floor, BYU and its deadliest 3-point attack in the country just got better and RJ Davis is playing like an All-American.

CJ Moore's Top 25 for Monday, Dec. 25
1. Purdue
2. Arizona
3. Kansas
4. Houston
5. Connecticut

8. Florida Atlantic

2. Arizona - #3 last week

The Wildcats will not be penalized for their double-OT loss to Florida Atlantic in these rankings. We’re only rewarding the Owls. It took 35 points from Johnell Davis and some unreal shotmaking to pull off the win. Arizona has four wins over top-25 KenPom teams. Only Purdue (five) has more.

If there was anything Arizona could have maybe done to adjust, it would have been to not let the Owls dribble into some of their rhythm jumpers out of ball screens. They shot 7-of-10 on jumpers against drop coverage. Tommy Lloyd did go small some down the stretch, moving Keshad Johnson to center. That’s something he couldn’t have done last year. This is a very good defensive team. It just ran into a really smart coach with big-time shotmakers.

8. Florida Atlantic - #10 last week

Arizona was ahead 17-3 early and on a 14-0 run, and Dusty May never called timeout. He looked as calm as ever. The Owls are always composed, and the possession that set up the game-winning free throw was so FAU. With two seconds on the shot clock, Giancarlo Rosado had the wherewithal to shot fake — not once, but twice!
https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads ... ce.mp4?_=2
May never panics, and neither does his team. Another March run feels like it’s coming. For now, the Owls just won the game of the year.

I couldn't agree more. All three of those teams are legitimate NC contenders. Arizona has played some good names but not good teams (at the time) because Duke, MSU, and Wisconsin have all improved markedly since Arizona played them. I've said it before and I'll say it again; Arizona is fools gold. They'll likely be one and done or maybe win one game in the NCAA tournament. The blue print is out on how to beat them. This is our best team since the TJ years. If we don’t learn how defend a ball screen we could definitely see a early exit.

Our numbers are great, plus I think a consensus has now emerged that we’re among the small group of teams who can cut down the nets this season. Only thing that can change this now is multiple bad losses in our Pac schedule.

And how much respect the pollsters have for AZ. We have a great opportunity this year, guys. Fantastic roster, great team chemistry, and a coach that gets it. Plenty of time to tighten up loose parts. Can’t wait to see what this team is gonna do next.

Men's Power Rankings: Every team's needs going forward

4. Arizona Wildcats (9-2)
Previous ranking: 4
Next 10 days: at California (Friday), at Stanford (Sunday), vs. Colorado (Thursday), vs. Utah (Saturday)

Tommy Lloyd upgraded his perimeter defense in the offseason, adding more toughness and versatility. And it played out that way through the first eight games of the season. But the Wildcats have had trouble containing opposing guards over the past couple weeks. Purdue's Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer torched them, and Florida Atlantic's Johnell Davis dropped 35 last weekend. They contained Alabama's guards from a scoring perspective, but the Tide also missed 32 3-pointers.

Seems low.

Nah, that sounds about right. League games are always closer, and it’s at Cal.

Want to give a shout out to Krivas. He has good footwork and has a nice touch around the rim. Can use either hand to finish plus can hit free throws.

While his defense isn’t elite he works hard at that end of the floor and on the glass.

Slowly becoming a major contributor to this years squad.

Love is gonna make a run at our pantheon of great dunkers before all's said and done this season. AG, D-Will, Iggy, Hassan, Mathurin, RJ, Chase...who else?
