Skowron appreciation thread

Skowron is 7-8 on FGs and perfect on extra points.

I... I'm still trying to process this. I don't understand this witchcraft.

Knowing that neither Stoops nor RR give kickers scholies at first, was he a Stoops or RichRod recruit?

In any event, well done!

He is 4th in the nation at 3.5 FG per game, but should go up higher as the rest of the teams play their second games.

Coach Lockwood's daughter gets the credit for this recruit.

From Jared Cohen at Sports360AZ:
Skowron wanted to carry this new found skill of his to the collegiate level and as a freshman, he went to the Arizona football tryout under then head coach, Mike Stoops. But it did not work out.

Instead, he became the Team Manager of the Women’s Soccer Team at Arizona while also playing some club soccer on the side. One member of the soccer team was Autumn Lockwood who is the daughter of Arizona Football’s defensive back coach, David Lockwood.

“I found out that she was Coach Lockwood’s daughter and I was kind of joking around one day and I was like ‘Hey! I kicked in high school a little bit so if the team needs a kicker, you should say something to your Pops!’” He explained. “She came back the very next day and said the walk-on tryout is really soon and I should go and try-out. So I was like why not?”

Autumn set Skowron up with Matt Dudek, Arizona’s Director of On Campus Recruiting/Player Personnel, and at first Skowron mentioned that Dudek didn’t think much of it. But after he saw him kick, he had a different tone.
I couldn't find the article that had the rest of the story, but as I remember it went something like this. All the walk-on's are trying out, Skowron starts to kick and makes 4 in a row including a nice long one which results in Dudek dashing across the field, running up to Skowron and saying, "We've got to talk!"

What I wonder is why his bio says this:
2013: Served as back-up placekicker.

I know, it's very early in the season, but his kicks look a lot better to me than Smith's did last year. I mean just the flight of the ball, his form, etc. Of course he's also connecting at a much higher clip, but we'll see how that % holds throughout the season.

Is Skowron on schollie yet? Keeps this up and he better be next year.
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

Just a pure jewl out of nowhere. Faced a lot of pressure and still made the kicks. He is the kind of player that wins games versus those who lose them.

SInce he was here last year, he should get one for sure. RR said that if you walk on, you can't get a scholie for 2 years. What an awful rule.

I know one thing that infuriates RR (although there are many) is the different rules for basketball and football.

In basketball, if you have an extra scholie you can give it to a walk on.

If we had had some of our kicking problems from years past we probably lose the UTSA game.

So good special teams are just the difference between winning and losing. No biggie :D

I hope not.

That would mean scoring too many FG's not enough TD's

Or maybe it will be because he's hit a handful of game winning FG's that have kept us undefeated going into the Rose Bowl as part of the first college playoff!

Well I didn't say anything about defense but yes, our steady FG kicker probably won the game for us and if we had FG kickers like we had in our recent past we would've had a huge chance of losing this game.

He literally saved this last game for us.

There can be no question that RR gives walk-ons as good a chance to play as any coach in the country. One of many reasons that we should appreciate him as our coach.

Looks like he also got the "National Specialist of the Week" award.
National recognition for Skowron
Sep 8, 12:33 PM

Arizona place kicker Casey Skowron earned two national awards Monday. He was named one of three Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week and National Specialist of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.

Skowron leads the nation in field goals with seven on the year. He was 4-for-4 in the Wildcats’ 26-23 win over UTSA on Thursday night. Skowron connected from 44, 38, 28 and 23 yards out, and added two PATs for a 14-point outing. Combined with his school record-tying 16-point performance in week 1, Skowron’s 30 points are the most in the nation by a kicker.

McCall dropping that sure interception that would have halted a USC scoring drive

Grigsby taking a big hit and coughing it up

RR not staying aggressive after we got to the 19 to shorten the distance or even score a TD

I could mention several other plays that influenced the game. Kid is 13-18 which is much better then we thought we would get from ou r kicker

Bingo. It shouldn't have even gotten to that point - Arizona had their chances to win this game long before that kick. The fact they even got the chance to kick that was because of a perfectly executed onside kick by Skowron. Without his FG kicking so far this year the Cats are 3-3 instead of 5-1. Remember that if he misses one FG then Arizona leaves San Antonio with an embarrassing loss.

And the fact that the kid is a walk-on who is playing just for the love of the game. The disgusting attacks on this kid are something I would more expect from the same low lifes at asu that thought it funny to berate Steve Kerr about his fathers death.

Receivers drop passes, QB's throw INT's, linemen get called for holding wiping out a TD, etc... and kickers miss field goals, sometime game winners. It happens. Reminds me of my Vikes lining up a field goal to put them up 10 on the Falcons in the NFC championship game a few years ago. Short kick with 2 minutes left. My wife says, "Looks like your Vikings are going to the Super Bowl!" I look at her with terror in my eyes thinking, "Did she just jinx my kicker!!" Wide left, Falcons come back, score, OT, Falcons win. CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!! She is still apologizing for that one.

Worst job on the team when you miss, because these guys aren't even considered real football players to some. People who rip apart the guys on the field giving it everything they have are the ugliest part of sports. No idea the psychological make-up, but it is not good. Seems like a large contingent of these "fans" reside in Philadelphia.

Go Cats!! You'll get the next one, Casey!!

Best thing RR can do is give that man a scholie. Give him the scholarship of that QB/WR who just left, McGee or whatever.

I was very upset he missed the FG at the end, but overall I was most disappointed in Anu's constant overthrowing of downfield receivers.

I believe walk-ons have to wait two years for a scholarship.

That is true, but he can give him one, but it will go against the original limit of 25 when he started as a walk on. Didn't McGee start the same time Skowron did?

Assuming of course that with McGee gone the count drops to 24.

It blows my mind that people acted this way. The kid is a walk on - one who is better than our last 3 scholarship kickers. We were missing our entire starting RB committee - one due to a dirty hit that knocked him out cold.

There are many things that could have changed this game, starting with that, and ending with Solomon's poor read on the 2 point conversion attempt.

This team is still young and makes mistakes. We still don't have the guys we need to stomp people with confidence. But thee fact of the matter is IN SPITE OF the fact that we had so many reasons we should have lost this game (how about Buck Allen being Bo Jackson compared to our guys, athletically speaking?) yet we lost by two in the waning moments of the game.

This loss wasn't on Skowron. This loss wasn't even really on our guys. This loss was on a collection of bad luck and mental errors that we nearly overcame.

I still think this season will be special. All the guys have to do is keep doing what they have been and keep correcting their mistakes as they grow. And that includes Skowron - who by the way - can actually kick the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. He's no noodle legged Zendejas.

Hey guys, lets not actual post videos or rants of those that need help. I rather not give them clicks or anything else that they can warp as support for their instability. I know my emotion went beyond that of rational emotion that should be shown after a loss, but that is on me trying to handle a loss of a pet only two days prior and had nothing to do with Skowron.

Skowron, keep kicking the hell out the ball. We will be in more close games, and I don't doubt you can hit the field goals.

I'm sorry, but anyone who said those things about him should be called out. He is a 20-year old walk-on kicker and for anyone to say derogatory crap about him or his family, are pathetic. Any ST coach worth their salt will tell the kicker - you get so much as grazed and you go down. UCLA got a flag and a re-kick for less the week before against Utah.
