2 Tyrell Johnson

Johnson is a 5'7", 164, Junior receiver from Fort Myers, FL. He is one of the players trying to bounce back from a disappointing season last year. After playing in every game as a true Freshman and catching 14 passes with 2 TDs, Johnson only played in 6 games last year missing the first half of the year with a foot injury. Also, his production dropped with only 4 catches on the year and 1 TD. If you want to look for a bright spot Johnson's average gain per catch jumped from 8.6 to 10 yards per catch. Also, even though he had fewer kickoff returns as a Sophomore (remember he missed 6 games) his average per return jumped from 23.7 to 25.5 yards per return.

This year Johnson is healthy entering the season after electing not to run track in the off season. He is still the fastest guy on the team and will have plays, including rushing attempts, designed to exploit his speed. Johnson starts the year as a #2 slot receiver behind Shun Brown who is not quite as fast, but has shown better hands and more consistent routes. Johnson will still be the starter for kickoff returns and if he is paired with JJ Taylor we will have 2 very dynamic return men.

2 is the number of times a Wildcat coach has been PAC coach of the year - Dick Tomey (1992) and Rich Rodriguez (2014).

I couldn't help but think he wasn't 100% in form when he came back. He got caught from behind on a kickoff against USC. And he's the last guy on AZ that you think could get run down like that.

I have yet to see this speed materialize that everyone keeps talking about. Maybe he can break through this year. To bad it isn't all about being fast

Yeah, I agree with this. Sometimes it seems like he wants to juke, trying to put moves on, instead of just taking off and getting upfield. If he would just get that first step and take off, it seems like he would have better success.

How about a fly sweep once in awhile?

You mean like the one TJ scored on Saturday?

Can see Tyrell Johnson getting decent amount of touches at RB until he gets hit so hard his shoulders touch. RR seemed to hve faith in him even though he put the ball on the ground. Slim pickings at that position though and I could see RR valuing his speed.

Hopefully we get Wilson back next week and he is 100%. We're going to need it.

We do need him back and i imagine we'll see him next week. Green should be a nice backup...not Taylor nice, but a hard hitting back. I'm glad he's ready to go to be honest.

Johnson neeeds to squeeze the rock. He's got the fumbles

Worst hands since Bug Wright.

I don't mind Johnson handling the rock, but hes a scat back. You can't have him push right up the middle and get completely crushed by people 3x his weight. I can't believe with such a small back that's fast they kept it up the middle instead of trying some edge rushes.

And yet we still can't figure out how to utilize this guy. I would think he would get 10 jet sweeps a game. He can't run between the tackles, is fumble prone and not a great receiver. He needs to have simple outside plays in my mind

Didn't TJ get run down by USC's kicker once? Our fastest guy slower than USC's kicker. Sounds about right.

I kid. Sort of.

Was the time hand timed?

Tyrell should be allowed to play with running shoes and gym shorts with no pads. No one will catch him then!

Hand timed start and finish. Good PR for him and the program. That's why a lot of college 40s are doctored and inaccurate. Most college guys get exposed when they do an electronic or laser timed 40s.

What difference does it make if you don't get him the ball?

Dude ran a 6.66 60 and 10.42 100m in a college track meets.

Hand timed or not. He's fast.

Hopefully he has been working on upper body strength to be able to hold onto the ball.

He is a north and south runner and at his size, that doesn't matter. Unless he can get to the outside quickly, defenders can get an angle. RR got away with drafting speed only at WVU because it was in the garbage laden Big East....that crap doesn't work in the PAC 12.
