Arizona Coaching Search

Post by ASUHATER! »

Fire up the flight tracker now that we're free from our collective prison/hell under RR. Time to actually move forward and try to improve as a program. Who are the top candidates.
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

i'll just go with fuck asu.

Who are your top candidates?

For me it’s Les Miles (veteran) and Major Applewhite (up-&-comer).
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

I like Les Miles a lot but I'd be worried about the offensive side of the ball. I'm still on the Lane Train, however improbably that may be. I posted this a couple weeks ago
Given all the reasons Lane likes FAU, Arizona sounds like a decent destination for him. Power 5 school with no expectations, but nothing structurally that would keep us in the basement (i.e. Vanderbilt, Oregon State, Kansas, Rutgers). Lane could recruit the hell out of UofA (weather, campus, scenery, etc). Arizona gives him a chance to stick it to USC every year, which he'd probably enjoy. And if nothing else, it can be a better stepping stone to a big time job than FAU. I'm not sure that big time programs are ready to give him a chance after one year at FAU. Proving himself somewhere like Arizona would be huge.

Yeah but then Kiffin would leave after 2 seasons if he had any success here. He's on the list, but ehhh.

If he leaves in 2 years after success, we're back hiring like we are right now, but in a much better position doing so. I highly doubt UCF wishes they hadn't hired Scott Frost because he left after 2 years.

Kevin Sumlin should be first on the list.

I’d be ok with Lane Kiffen, but he doesn’t seem to be a Heeke kind of guy.

At least Herm Edwards is off the table.

Kevin Sumlin, Nathaniel Hackett, Dino Babers.

I don't know how realistic any of those options are. I am just throwing names out there that I wouldn't mind taking over.

I'd be okay with that. He's probably the best coach that we could get, has contacts throughout the region, and it would be revenge on ASU.

He also understands rivalry games. I actually have Graham at the top of my (realistic) list.

Copy from the 2017 thread

Scott Satterfield - Seems a pure southern guy that would have no interest in Arizona, and no western ties. I would go No. He would be cheap!
Skip Holtz - No connections out west, hasn't really been successful. So No.
Lane Kiffin - Very greasy guy. I would expect Arizona to do well for two years and he would leave with some kind of scandal left behind.
Rod Carey - On the RR tract with a continual decline with his own guys. No please.
Mike Bobo - could be interested. Would like to see how this season goes for Colorado State. Could be a decent hire.
Ken Niumatalolo - Semi interested, wouldn't win the press conference but seems to be a solid coach.
Brian Polian - mmm na. Not really interested.
Dave Doeren - Average at NC State, was suppose to be a big year for them. Kinda blah for me.
Mike Yurcich - Maybe, but I'm not a big fan of the hot coordinator route.
Tee Martin - Maybe, not sure if he will leave USC for Arizona.
Mike Bloomgren - Would like his offense style, but not sure. Would be a new direction.
Lance Anderson - Recruiting coordinator and DC with west coast ties. I might favor this coordinator above all the rest.
Mel Tucker - Not coming to Arizona.
Ruffin McNeill - Not interested
Derek Mason - Was a top choice to start the year! A defensive minded Arizona Native. 3 mil in salary.
Kevin Sumlin - I'm not sure about this one. He seems to be a good coach but still has various issues (how many QB transfers?)
John Chavis - 60 year old career DC guy. No thanks.
Dave Aranda - Like what I see but would like to see what LSU does this year.
Steve Sarkisian - He seems as greasy as Lane Kiffen, but doesn't turn my stomach over as much. I haven't been impressed with him as a Head Coach.
Tosh Lupoi - Other than being a Alabama Recruiter, don't know anything else.
Bryan Harsin - Seems like a good coach at Boise State. I would be interested. (1.6 mil a year). Might keep Yates?
Jason Candle - Midwest guy, but looks to be a good coach.
Mike Norvell - umm...ASU guy....bah. Was a good OC...
Nathaniel Hackett - Highest position was a OC coach for Syracuse before jumping with Doug to the NFL. Coached and recruited west coast a bunch, and theres a rumor he would like a HC job out west.

We can't compete with all the other programs out there in trying to hire (and then keep) a great head coach, so don't even try.

Figurehead head coach (could even be someone like Dick Tomey) making $500K a year.

Push OC and DC salaries to around $1.5M a year (or more). Make our coordinator positions some of the best in football. Create an edge.

asu just tried that and had both coaches bail inside 2 weeks. Pretty difficult to do that successfully without having a long time coach transition to that style (Bowden, Paterno).

Good. And when our OC/DC bail, we are offering $1.5M to each for the replacement.

Who do you think we get?

I mean honestly, it we go the route I'm taking about, both our OC and DC are relieved of duty and national search starts.

Michael Lev is reporting that Yates will be interim head coach.

Does that mean we aren’t hiring someone for the upcoming season ?

I like Marcel Yates a whole hell of a lot but I have no idea if he is ready for this. But maybe that's what we need. Otherwise he is likely gone in 1-2 seasons anyways.
