Just thought we could use a new thread to track the latest when it comes to Sumlin's staff.

Good point. To recap:
Addae, Amey out.
Yates retained.
Mazzone and McKinney speculated to be joining.

Hopefully Cats get a full time ST coordinator too.

That was quick in and out.

That was the only shitty thing out of Heeke's process. Allowing Justice to quit and sign a contract knowing he was going to fire RR.

That really didnt sit well with me either. I was thinking/hoping that Heeke would make the new coach take him or strongly consider it.

I imagine he will be compensated. Small potatoes in the scope of things.

Thought I saw on Twitter that Heeke had Justice sign a contract with mitigation, like Sumlin signed. If FAU resigns Justice, UA is off the hook for his salary.

I would assume his salary here would be higher than his FAU salary. I hope so, because I think he deserves something from us. If he goes back to FAU it works out ok, but it's a bad position we put him in and I'd feel better knowing he ended up better off somehow.

I am curious how much of a say Yates has in the assistants. Maybe 60/40 Sumlin?

1. How much say did Yates have in their selection with RR
2. Wierd you say it's "all Sumlin". He just met them. Quick trigger.

The only outside hire Yates would have made is Boone and Donte. Amey and Addae were hired from within. This leads me to believe RR had all the say.

I would not doubt that is accurate, but what are you basing it on? You have also posted in elsewhere and present it as if you have inside information.

Sumlin knew before he landed here. I guarantee it. Good coaches know when and how quickly to take the trash out.

You only hire assistant coaches who want to recruit. Can't say if Hunley or Cecil do, they aren't so young anymore, but if they do, then love to have them. They will certainly win the meet and greets with donors and other fans.

Okay, I hadn't seen anything official.

I have to believe Mazzone was strongly looking at the New Mexico job, which would make a lot of sense for him.

He graduated from New Mexico, started coaching there, knows Bob Davie and wants to become a head coach. Mazzone would be an automatic hire at New Mexico when Bob Davie leaves, especially if he was already an OC that connected with Albuquerque.

I think Mazzone is a great hire for OC at Arizona, but I wouldn't mind seeing him at New Mexico either. Hopefully we will see an official announcement soon if it's not already available.

Singletary still tweeting like he will stay. From a couple stories I have heard, I don't want him to.

One guy I really want to stay and the players love is Billy Kirelawich. But he is a day 1 Coach Rod guy. Not sure Sumlin would keep him.

Edit: Welp. Nevermind. Billy is not being retained.

Kirelawich was let go by Rich along with Casteel. Amey took over for him in 2016.

The below is from a Hansen article. Illustrates how I feel about this. If, as some say they are only qualified to be lifelong position coaches, then why not bring them here as such? They certainly have a wealth of experience and NFL background.
Who cares if the young uns don't know them yet? They need to be steeped in the history including the greatest play in UA history, Cecil's 106 yard pick 6. Show recruits Cecil's SI cover framed on the office wall. Pictures of Hunley as a Bronco. They will learn, and they will respect.

I truly believe these two guys would work their asses off for UA out of love and passion for the program and I have no doubt they would recruit like a motherfucker.

They want to be here. It's a no-brainer to me, and something Sumlin should seriously consider.

“We ate at Houston’s; Chuck brought his family,” said Hunley. “As you can imagine, we talked about Wildcat football. That’s what we always talk about. Today, Chuck and I were in agreement — both of us need to be back at Arizona. We both want to be there.”
“We have been treated like outsiders,” said Hunley. “They wouldn’t even introduce recruits to Chuck this year.”
“Low man on the totem pole,” said Hunley. “RichRod didn’t even tell Chuck if he was going to bring him back next season.”
“The football job at Arizona has been lacking people who have passion for the school and the program,” Hunley said. “For whatever reason, any kind of UA connection seemed to be avoided. It’s time to go back like a lot of other schools and take care of your own and be proud of what you’ve built.”

^ great stuff.

I recall Hunley saying too that RichRod wouldn't even let him sit with the UA players during a game. He sat with the UCLA guys.
