Arizona @ Houston discussion thread

I know we have one group of Cougars to take care of first, but wanted to get the discussion started.

My son (current Wildcat) and I just booked our flights - heading out for the game to meet up with my best bud from UofA who lives in Houston.

Good places to eat/drink in the University and Downtown area?

Anybody else going? Did you get tickets in the UofA Section? (We haven't bought our tickets yet.)

Down 23-17 at half to Rice now. Rice is considered possibly the worst team in FBS football.

Yeah I just looked up 3 different preseason 1-130 rankings and Rice was #124, 126 and 128 in them. Pretty much everyone thought they'd be a like 0-2 win team this year.

Houston is a lot better of a team than BYU. Almost guaranteed we get an 0-2 start.

Ed Oliver is going to eat our lunch.

And I mean that literally. He’ll be snacking on a stolen club sandwich with one arm and throwing aside our offensive linemen with the other, while Khalil dances around in the pocket waiting to be dragged down by Oliver’s bacon grease-stained fingers.

Yay...

Chi, you actually mean while Khalil dances around in the pocket waiting to toss another I'll fated and I'll advised 50 yard bomb, just hoping someone is with-in receiving distance to track it down before Ed Oliver drags him down with those bacon grease-stained fingers.

The middle of our line was terrible last night. The center position needs to improve technique

I watched 3 strait plays of him getting walked backwards like it was a drill. I'm more impressed Tate stayed in the pocket

I totally agree. The talent on this team should easily win. But is coaching and motiviation and selfishness a problem? Hard to tell from one game.

I think this was a wakeup call.

Arizona 27 Houston 20

Not making any excuses to miss that.

The Houston D was gassed by the middle of the second quarter against Rice. We should be able to score alot of points on em if we play to our strengths and not impatiently throw bombs on every other play. I think we win a close one.

This is really misleading. In today's game, you only need a 6-6 record to go to a bowl game. Larry Smith had 6 straight winning records while at Arizona.

The Wildcats have appeared in a bowl
game in five of the last six seasons, the best
stretch in program history.

and he only needs to bust a couple long runs to keep them on their heals...then you can pick them off from the pocket. More slant routes too

I'm not even sure he needs to hit long runs. He needs to keep the D honest by being a threat. To be a threat, he just needs to be gameplanned in to run. Everyone knows he's dangerous as long as we don't neuter ourselves by keeping his running out of the gameplan, like we did vs BYU.

Just being willing to run him will suck an extra man into the box.

I hope our pass routes get a lot more creative. Didn't see many crossing patterns and running guys like Brown underneath.

Would love to see Tate roll and give him options but I doubt that is in the game plan. With Oliver you better roll the picket away from him.

Should be fun to see the changes and hopefully improvement this week

I was at the BYU game and we did run actually crossing routes, I could see them all crossing from the end zone...not on every play for sure, but on most routes we did have a dragger across the middle and Tate simply chose never to throw to him. He had the guy open pretty much every time EARLY in the route. He did throw to the drag receiver a couple of times, but only after Tate rolled out and the receiver had by then crossed all the way to the other side of the field. That eliminated all YAC once Tate completed the pass because by that time the receiver was surrounded by a morass of BYU defenders. To me, a quick hitting drag route or slant seems like a great way to utilize Shun Brown.

Hope this week the coaching staff and Tate work on getting the ball out much quicker than he did last game on some of those routes. If he does, our offense should look more snappy. Would also like to see some more jet sweeps or outside runs away from Oliver, we tried to pound between the tackles too much last game and it didn't work well. Not good with an undersized line and undersized running back who's better out in space. They should also copy and use some of those wheel route plays BYU used with their running back, that play was wide open every time.

If I were offensive coordinator of this team, I'd use JJ Taylor pretty much the opposite way in which we used him game 1.

Nice to hear as I only watched the replay.

Too early to call the Houston Game the most important in the Sumlin Era :)

Thanks for the info on the routes Catsby. I assumed this was the case but its hard to tell for sure on TV. While the game plan can certainly improve, Tate's decision making in the passing game needs to improve as well. He loves to throw the deep pass even when it is not necessary. He did the same thing in RRods offense but it wasn't as noticeable in the run heavy offense.

Reading the comments on the Cougar board they are concerned with their secondary. If the coaching staff can convince Tate to stick to throwing to the short and intermediate routes I think we can have some success. I still think he should throw deep every once in a while (if he can evade Oliver) to try and keep the DB's honest.

Exactly. Gotta stretch the field now and then.

What’s Going To Happen
It only Week 2, but it’s desperation time for an Arizona team that has to quickly get past a miserable first game. It will.

Tate will start to look amazing again, and the Wildcat offense will come up with the game it was supposed to have against BYU. But Houston will keep up the pace until the end.

It’s going to be a fun, thrilling game with massive momentum swings, and in the end, Kevin Sumlin will get past his old program. His backfield will carry the Cats.

Fearless Prediction & Line
Arizona 41, Houston 37
