Arizona football’s 2024 recruiting class shifting ahead of early signing period
Expect Wildcats to replace recent departures with higher-ranked prospects

By Brian J. Pedersen Dec 10, 2023, 1:03pm PST 11 Comments / 12 New

After retaining the Territorial Cup to end the regular season, Arizona’s 2024 recruiting class included 22 known commitments. That number has steadily dropped since, either an indication that prospects have changed their minds about the Wildcats or (more likely) the program is clearing room for other pledges.

The latest to back out of the class is 3-star Texas defensive lineman Jaedon Langley, who decommitted Sunday. That’s the fifth decommitment since Nov. 30, lowering the UA’s 2024 class to 17 known players with the Early Signing Period looming Dec. 20, and overall the class has had 11 previously committed players decommit.

Others to decommit since the Territorial Cup are athletes Landon Bell, Chance Harrison and Kayo Patu and receiver Quimari Shemwell. None were ranked higher than No. 746 in the country, per 247Sports.

Arizona’s class now sits at 51st in the country, but odds are the Wildcats intend to fill those departures as evidenced by recent activity involving other 2024 recruits. This weekend, in addition to numerous transfer portal targets visiting campus, the Wildcats hosted 4-star Utah offensive lineman Darius Afalava and a pair of Oregon commits: 4-star receiver Dillon Gresham and 4-star linebacker Dylan Williams.

The UA is also in the mix for 4-star receiver Aaron Butler, who decommitted from Colorado on Saturday. Butler told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins that his father played with Arizona offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll at Pitt.

“Arizona was one of my favorite schools before I committed to Colorado and they’re recruiting me hard,” Butler said. “They’re coming in for a home visit early next week and when they do, I’m going to set up an official visit.”

That would be a nice pickup.

Next year is a huge opportunity for us and we still need to find a few transfers that can provide immediate help at positions of need. It looks like we'll sign at least 2 to the DL, so if Norton and Sio return, I feel better there.

Still think our biggest needs are a a couple of LBs (1 a solid starter), an offensive lineman, and another veteran back ala Williams to spell Coleman. Add a TE who can block and I'd feel really good about next year.

We need more than just a veteran back. We need a big bruising back with a bit of speed and some twitch to him. We're going to miss Wiley and Williams. The rest of the positions are going to be well manned

I wonder if they are thinking the kid from Apollo HS could fill this role. He is a pretty big kid and could get some tough yards

Same. I just really hate the word commitment. They aren't commits until they are signed. A marriage is a commitment. Pinky promising a college that you will go there is not.

I'm waiting for the NIL, actual enrollment, and when they actually play before hitting the transfer portal.

From ESPN Plus, the UofA's class is currently ranked #44. Btw, asu is ranked #48.

ESPN 300 commits: 2 | Previous ranking: 45
Big 12 rank: 6 of 16
Top offensive commit: QB Demond Williams Jr. (No. 227)
Top defensive commit: S Turran Williams (three stars)

After having won just one game in 2021, coach Jedd Fisch continues to elevate and steer Arizona back in the right direction. The Wildcats have won some key recruiting battles this cycle, led by landing in-state QB Demond Williams Jr. Committed to Ole Miss at one point, Zona ultimately kept QB Demond Williams Jr. at home. He is not a physically imposing prospect at roughly 5-11, 170 pounds, but he is a passer with a knack for making plays, possesses a quick release and can create on the move and burn defenses with his legs. They pulled ESPN 300 RB Jordan Washington out of California, and he can be dangerous when he gets to the perimeter as he possesses big play speed and has posted a 10.24 in the 100 meters this past track season. WR Audric Harris, is a nice pickup out of powerhouse program Bishop Gorman and had worked closely with former teammate and current USC freshman standout Zachariah Branch.
