The chant should have been “Fuck Tony Padilla”. The only thing “the Mormons” did to us was hit every goddamn corner three our lazy defense allowed them to take unchallenged. Which, last time I checked, is what they were supposed to do.

Not even sure I would bet that half the Zona Zoo would know who founded the LDS church, and even less what angel appeared to him.
Thinking most of the Zona Zoo would guess Brigham Young as the founder.
So not really a statement on Mormonism, just pissed off students lashing out on an easy subject. And like Chi said, take it out on Padilla.

When that call was made and the crowd was going super agitated... I said to my son... "This is about to get ugly... people are going to start throwing shit onto the court" I was relieved that didn't happen but I know something would happen. I guess the anti mormon rant was just the easiest... lowest common denominator form of protest. It was certainly a bad look that could have been even worse. Hopefully the message was received.
This is the most honest and accurate post-mortem I've seen. The crowd had every reason to be upset. Some will say "well, we didn't dominate from the opening tip, so it's our own fault," but that's true of every close loss by every team in every sport, and nobody dominates every game. It was an egregious call, and while I'm supremely skeptical, the league should still take some kind of action, even if it's safely non-public in the off-season. The crowd didn't riot, but they unfortunately lashed out at the first thing they could think of that was available. Some think PR black eyes are tragic terminal illnesses, but I think more in terms of 24-hour news cycles and click bait. Another unfortunate aspect of the turn of events is that the narrative neatly switched from The Call to The Chant, FWIW. I'd say take it out on Utah, but the biggest key is to win the rest of our home games in the stretch run.

Read, "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer.
Under the Banner of Heaven is about FLDS. Different than LDS.
It's not that simple. It also gives ample insight through stories of the church's history, founders, etc. perhaps you missed that part.

I think you can over ref on the condemnation of the fans and alumni for what was just a bunch of stupid kids that should be more in tune with what is acceptable and what isn't. It was regrettable but hardly representative of the University students and alumni in total. The Zona Zoo should now make sure they police their own and root out any further transgression of this type for good.

I agree! It was a bunch of angry sports fan students impulsively being rude. I don't want to overemphasize their representation of the entire student body... Those kids fucked up. It was public. It made headlines nationwide.
Trust me, Ive done worse. (And I fully deserved the criticism I received when I did)

My hope is that we play them in the Big12 conference tournament. I think they are a really good team who most represents a team like Alabama. I want those style differences to simulate what we might see in the tournament. Utah tonight will be letting it rip also.

Padilla was a ref the first time we played them. If our guards can play a little better than they did the first game (Love took 22 shots) and V picks it up (only had 3pts in first game) we have a chance at beating these guys. I don't expect Tobe to be as good (6/6) or Carter (4/5 from 3) but no one played absolutely out of their minds other than those guys. Had 15 TO's so if we can cut those down and hit some outside shots we have a shot. Of course they had a bunch of TO's that wont be repeated at home. The first time we played them they were missing their best 3 pt shooter and he is back.
Hoping for a good game with NO injuries. Just expect a good effort on defense and keep rebounding in our favor and for it to come down to the final possession with Padilla forced to make a call or not.

Why? What is the profound logic in a conference tournament like this? As a lower seed, why even bother showing up? I get protecting the higher seeds, but there's no need to protect any seed below the top 5-6. LOL
On a lighter note, maybe they should rename the conference to the "Flying V" conference.

yeah, that's a wild format. i wonder if they're trying to make it easier for fans to travel-in for the games and to optimize ticket sales, since it's a smaller arena. imagine one of the low seeds going on a run, though, and having to extend your trip by up to five days as a fan. unlikely, but the sun belt conference does have a lot of parity!

Best way to get money for the whole conference is tournament shares
Best way for small conferences but not super small conferences to get tournament shares? Make sure your top 1 or 2 teams wins the conference tournament and gets a 11 12 13 seed.
This format is how you ensure it
