With Chet coming in and mustache guy back, maybe Ballo thought he would sit a whole lot.Spaceman Spiff wrote: Tue Apr 20, 2021 1:51 pmYeah, but those players can easily become players who are dissatisfied with their role when the minutes they thought they could get don't appear.Alieberman wrote: Tue Apr 20, 2021 1:42 pmI like having players that aren't afraid of some tough competition.Spaceman Spiff wrote: Tue Apr 20, 2021 1:39 pmThis is the part I struggle with. If you think you're retaining JB and Koloko for 2 years, Azuolas for 1 and getting Anderson next year...dunno, it's just hard to see what Ballo brings until maybe 3 years in the future.gronk4heisman wrote: Tue Apr 20, 2021 1:02 pm Agree that Ballo is a much better player than Tautvilas and actual stands on his own merits, I was referring more to the added value seems low based on our current and future roster. Glad to hear that you don't think that this was done for the purpose of appeasing another player.
If he wants to be here and is cool with minutes being tough to come by, ok, I guess. Spokane is too cold, maybe?
Which is why I made the cold joke. Ballo had tough competition at Gonzaga, and every article I could find said he'd wanted a larger role. I'm just not sure I see that as likely at Arizona.
He was a very good defender, conference DPOY. His offense was much less of an asset. He's probably have been a rotational bench guy and option against smaller 4's as a good defender and rebounder at 6'7.
I believe that Lloyd kindly informed him that he really wouldn't be a fit in his system.
Potential playing time...Merkin wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 12:41 pm Seriously, why would any basketball player choose Wazzu over the UA? Better facilities, better travel, better weather, much better city, hotter coeds and so on.
Or Lloyd wants your scholarship for TyTy.Merkin wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 12:41 pm Seriously, why would any basketball player choose Wazzu over the UA? Better facilities, better travel, better weather, much better city, hotter coeds and so on.
We're only at 9 with Kerr, 11 if Dezonie and Nowell come through, 12 if TyTy commits. So Aikens would have been 13 (with TyTy) so maybe coach is holding open for TyTy and a (unnamed) transfer.
I think if Terry is gone Nowell is gone which would open up another spot. With that said I am hoping both stay.YoDeFoe wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 1:17 pmWe're only at 9 with Kerr, 11 if Dezonie and Nowell come through, 12 if TyTy commits. Awesome news, now we have at least one PG on the roster.
What is this feeling... is it hope?
It was really the best option for all involved.
I’ll be happy when you tell me Mathurin is locked in
I imagine that since this is a very late cycle coaching search, it makes sense for both sides to come together for this year and then see where that takes us. Wouldn't surprise me to see one of Murphy or Terry leave after the season and Lloyd continue to bring in "his guys" to add to what he's looking to create here.Chicat wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 2:50 pmIt was really the best option for all involved.
Not sure if Lloyd is shutting someone out that he's close to and always envisioned working with, but this will go a hell of a long way to making sure the alumni get on board. He just made it really difficult for some of the more vocal alums to stay mad.
Since he's been visiting football practices, I'm sure Lloyd has seen the buy in from the football alums and how that take a few steps toward creating a culture.

Can't replicate the size of those Baylor dudesProfessorFate wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:07 pm I'm hoping the last assistant spot goes to his buddy Jakus from Baylor. I would be pretty happy if we have the same results that Golden St ended up having.YoDeFoe wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 2:56 pmLloyd getting the Steve Kerr replacing Mark Jackson at Golden State set up...UofAlum05 wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 2:51 pm Man TyTy seems like the puzzle piece to 2021-2022 being very, very exciting. According to Scheer, the player development coach for the Phoenix Suns is the most likely third assistant. Don't know much about him other than he is an analytics guy.ProfessorFate wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:07 pm I'm hoping the last assistant spot goes to his buddy Jakus from Baylor. What is this talk about Baylor being the bigger team? They started 6'2" / 6'3" / 6'4" / 6'5" and a 6'10" center!!RondaeShimmy wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:11 pmCan't replicate the size of those Baylor dudesProfessorFate wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:07 pm I'm hoping the last assistant spot goes to his buddy Jakus from Baylor. Yes but there is a chance he transfers or goes pro. Leaving options opengronk4heisman wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:09 pmBenn never left.BeardownZonaZona wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:06 pm Anyone want to tell me Benn back now? Once I get that message I'll be off pins and needles
They lifted with the football team and it showed because they bullied Gonzaga.YoDeFoe wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:28 pmWhat is this talk about Baylor being the bigger team? I made a bundle betting that game, and the obvious reason Baylor was going to win wasn't that they were "bigger" (although they were certainly blacker, if that's the translation). Baylor had a TON of three point shooting and Gonzaga really didn't have much outside of Kispert and Ayayi.
Baylor buried the Gonzaga team in early threes and then took away perimeter shots from the two guys who could actually shoot it for Gonzaga. I mean shit - Gonzaga shot SIXTY THREE percent on two point attempts. They simply didn't have the three point firepower to keep up after Baylor opened up on a 29-10 run to start the game.
It wasn't "size."
Here's that coach:gronk4heisman wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:25 pmAccording to Scheer, the player development coach for the Phoenix Suns is the most likely third assistant. Baylor's an interesting study. They used to be all 2-3. Now they play an aggressive man.YoDeFoe wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:28 pmWhat is this talk about Baylor being the bigger team? If he can win back Spiff, then it would be a miracleEastCoastCat wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 4:08 pm Kerr and Jet staying is great news.
CTL appears to want to build on Miller’s legacy instead of replace it. Best scenario to heal our wounds and get everyone excited about Arizona basketball again.
Which is the way it’s supposed to be.
Which tells me Robbins' decision to fire Miller had nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with on court results and the trajectory of the program. It was all about ego.EastCoastCat wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 4:08 pm Kerr and Jet staying is great news.

Having said that -- Lloyd deserves fan support and I think he'll get it. In fact, I think most, not all fans, get it: They support the basketball program and the current coach, players, staff, etc...
And they know that Robbins and Heeke are trash.
