FURD preview....

Post by EOCT »

Should be a close, tough game. I think we gut out a tight win.

Lots of things going for FURD and its fans. First, a very nice team.

Next, Maples. Oh crap, are those Tree fans nuts or what? Last year they gave the game to us and the team and fans haven't forgotten. Add to that they're playing the Arizona Wildcats for special brag rights and, oh-----the early season Pac lead is on the line.

The matchups. Back-court----hold on now---should be a Furd tip. This is Chasson Randle, one of the Pac's top candidates for POY; alongside a tough, fast, experienced and big Anthony Brown who should be able to handle either Pitts or York easily; helped out in the back-court by a nice player in Marcus Allen.

Then at C I think you have to nod Stefan Nastic over Zeus(sorry, man), certainly on O. I call Nastic as under-rated.

Brash vs Rosco Allen or Freshman Reid Travis. Big in favor of Brash based on his breakout aggression vs Utah.

SJ and RHJ vs various various Furd match-ups, no contest. You kidding me? Whether Furd goes big or small on the wings they get stuffed and roasted.

Tactics should be interesting. Anyone disagree both teams would like to run? Randle, Brown and Allen will turn up the heat. They should pick and roll Randle in as much as possible, and I hope we're ready. Nastic will get lots balls, so Zeus has gotta stay out of foul trouble. Dawkins has smart experienced guys who are ready to be pushed further into their triangle-type D, and our young players should see surprises.

Yeah, a tough test In a wacky arena. A great test for us, and I think we'll pass in a tight one.

An aside. TJ has clearly bested Kevin Pangos and Delon Wright(RHJ doing most of the D), and now goes against Chasson Randle. I'd love to see the big guy hammer Randle and clearly and get the recognition he deserves. Jones and Harrison can come in March.

Few things...

First isn't Travis hurt? Like indefinitely?

Second, on the Nastic vs. Zeus comparison...Nastic averages 13.9 ppg vs. 8.8 for Zeus, but he takes double the amount of shots. And he only is shooting 47% versus the 60% that Zeus shoots. He does get about 2 more boards per game though, but also plays 3 more minutes per game. He shoots better from the line, but not by a whole lot.

I mean I think Nastic is fine, but I don't think he is underrated. I just think Furd looks to him more often than AZ looks at Zeus in regards to offensive touches.

I am not sold on Dawkins as a coach. I have always felt that up until last year, well frankly outside of their tourney run, that a coach has seldom done less with more. I seem to remember hearing how Dawkins was on the hot seat with a 21-12, 10th seeded team with 2 NBA draft picks. He's just not that solid of a coach IMO.

As far as this year, Dawkins has a team that has some decent wins-always in overtime, and some questionable losses. Now they did go to NYC and beat a team that AZ didn't...but so did ASU.

I'd like to think that this game will be close at half, and then not close. Randle can be a ballhog that takes questionable shots, and if those shots aren't going in the hoop like Booker, they become really horrible shots.

Good catch on Travis, OD. Should hurt a little not being able to use him in back-up roles, and especially if Furd plays small(which I think we should expect) and they used Brown some in the paint to spell Allen. If that's the case, maybe they bring in Robert Cartwright to work with Randle because he seems ready for minutes.

Nastic. I hear you. The edge I give to Nastic is on the offensive boards and passing. But my biggest worry is Zeus and foul.

No, my biggest worry is Maples. This should be a terrific game to travel and see, huh?

Thanks, EOTC. I have nothing to add because I haven't seen Stanford play even once this year. That's OK because Arizona fans need focus on what Arizona fans do: watching Arizona.

It will be interesting to see if I'm wrong, because I have that rare feeling where Arizona is ready to play. And in a way that it too often hasn't been in road games this season, where we've really only been locked in for a single a half at Eugene. I'm predicting that Arizona is determined to match Stanford's effort and out-rebound them significantly. So I don't think the game will be tight.

Very thin in the frontcourt. Just the Humphrey kid from Sunnyslope off the bench. (We were recruiting him for awhile.)

Yeah, KK. Looks like Nastic, Allen, maybe a little Humphrey and some Brow; but that takes Brown away from Randle.

Humphrey was a nice looking kid in high school, potentialwise at least. As I recall he was a football player(huge QB at 6/8 or so) who came late to hoops as a Jr. But hasn't seen much floor this year----just a few mpg. I thought we may have offered him, but maybe not.

Very impressive that the Cats are 8-0 against Stanford under Miller. Lets make it 9-0 tonight. Will not be easy. Need to have a solid performance on both offense and defense. But the way the Cats looked last week gives me a lot of confidence. Bear Down Arizona and beat Stanford!!!!!!!!

If the FURD somehow pulls out a win can we expect to see the fans storm the court? Or will they act like they deserve to be a top Pac12 team?

Of course they'll storm. The only Pac 12 team that wouldn't storm thr court against us is ucla and that's just because they don't have fans.
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

i'll just go with fuck asu.

Some fans will actually storm the court twice according to Bill Walton math.
